Funny this thread should be here now, I'm at right about that point myself on my first time through. The game's tough at first, no doubt about that, but I actually restarted and found that putting lots of points into intelligence so you get more ability points per level helps.
Is the thread helping?(I hope it does.)

I know, that's why I killed him.
Hey, I'm calling a hit: take him out.

Sounds good. I'll try that. Should I put a few skill points into it?
Eh, I found that I never really ever used explosives while playing, although if you're really planning on using grenades, mines, etc. then putting in a few points couldn't help, although I'd recommend focusing on Small Guns first and then branching out.
I've been focusing on that, along with Sneak and Lockpick.
Explosive is actually one of the best skill sets, if maxed out everything is a one hit kill and you'll never set off mines.

Energy weapons are good against Super Mutants, remember that!.

Are you talking about Mr. Burke or Tenpenny?

I killed Tenpenny in my current game just the other day with a Katana...

Hey, I'm calling a hit: take him out.
Tell Lucas Simms you'll disarm the bomb.
Go talk to Mr. Burke.
Agree to detonate the nuclear device.
Go back to Simms, and report it and give him the detonator.
Follow Simms.
Burke will assassinate Simms.
Kill Burke.
Take Burke's stuff (kinda nice) and take Simms' stuff (including a Chinese Assault Rifle).

True, but with a powerful gun like Blackhawke or one of the unique snipers and maxed out Small Guns, you can oneshot just as easily.

Add in the surprise attack bonus with Sneak and it's even better.

In the end, however, I suppose it just boils down to personal preference.

How's using melee weapons? My brother, 3 years older than me at 16(If you can do simple subtraction, don't nag me about it.), wants to make an African American(He wants to make him like Luke Cage) melee fighter. The idea of bringing a sword(or whatever melee weapon you have on you at the time) to the laser gun fight is still strange to me. Is it really that effective?(In Fallout 3, I mean. Many online gamers have tasted the Energy Sword's blade.)

Yeah, I've had the BlackHawk but I don't like sniping in Fallout, that and the unique weapons are a ***** to get.

Although the Terrible Shotgun is totally worth it, with your sneaky bugger approach its the strongest weapon in the game, but once again you have to go to hell in a hand cart to get it.

Depends. I tend to avoid melee characters, but that's also because my mods make gun combat quite dangerous. Dangerous to the point that melee combat is only an option for indoor corridors that give little time for an enemy to get alot of shots off. I couldn't tell you how well it works in the "normal" game, but I do think that melee is pretty decent, though it can be rather dangerous.

I'd start bumping up repair, maybe. What problems are you having? Getting destroyed by Super Mutants? Being discovered sneaking?
Super Mutants are the problem. Takes me forever to take em down by Hunting Rifle while they have the same weapon. I'm thinking of bumping up repair, now that I see how useful it is.

There really isn't a wrong way to build a character.

The beginning of the game can be somewhat difficult until you really start to gather armor and weapons and ammo, and get some more perks and points into your skills.

Just stick with it for a bit and you'll start to notice that those Raiders are pushovers.
Yeah, I've been checking around other forums and most of the people there said that it would get easy at around Level 7ish. I'm just having a lot of trouble getting around from place to place. Movement is slow and I have to take several subway dungeons to make it to the next area. The exploding head from a critical hit is what's keeping me going.

Thanks. I'll keep pushing until it gets easier.("That's what she said" joke inbound)
easiest thing to do is just explore and do some side quests first to lvl up a bit before you go running around DC, i hit the lvl cap before i really started the main quest just by running around doing side quests and i still haven't even come close to all that's available.
I'll do that. On a side note: Seriously? I can't wait to teleport back to Megaton and start wandering then.
Yeah there is just an insane amount stuff in the world to find and explore, its crazy, tho be careful not to skip any of the story by getting to far ahead and entering vault 112 to early cause you miss a fair chunk of story.

I find that even though the Terrible Shotgun is crazy powerful, I don't use it that much, as to get the full benefit every single pellet has to hit, meaning you're going to be standing very close to your opponent. Using it endgame with Albino/Giant Radscorpions and Deathclaws which wreak havoc in close quarters, I find that it's safer to snipe, however I've got a really low HP count, so if you've got a high HP and buff up with Buffout and Med X, I can see it being really effective.

I've given mine to Charon, he's unstoppable with it.

I hardly fight in the game when I've got Charon in power armour and with that shotgun.

That's a good idea; I never really used companions other than Dogmeat, although I think it'd be interesting to see a minmaxed character completely specialized in things like Speech, Lockpick, Computers etc. and leave all the combat to a companion.

My advice to you is that you should download all of the DLC if you haven't already, especially Operation Anchorage because if you turn down the difficulty and play through it (like I did on my 3rd play through) you get what is literally the best armor in the game, as well as weapons if you use an exploit, but it may take away the challenge of the game, so be aware of that.

The greatest advice I can give is to go to http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki. Careful of spoilers, but it is the greatest resource you can have because it tells you about virtually everything in this huge game. I still use it to find out where I can find special weapons, gear, items and other fun things. I HIGHLY recommend you use it.

So you're totally 24, right? XD

In response to your question, yes, this thread is handy. I'm doing a build based on getting pretty much everything by the end of the game, maxed skills and 10 in all attributes (taking almost perfect at level 30 and getting all the attribute bobbleheads AFTER that... and yes, I have Broken Steel). Of course, I had to be a stubborn butthead and try to do the fire ant mission at level 4, thinking it would have some awesome reward... that's several hours of hell I would've liked to have headed off beforehand.
