Yeah, that's interesting news... and a definite surprise when he came out with it. Of course, consoles are still tethered to [poor] specs, so there'll be a major limit to what will be available and workable. But it's definitely a welcome start, and something I've missed on Skyrim in particular (Morrowind's the only TES I've ever modded).

How is this going to work, exactly? I mean, obviously things like Script Extenders and other engine plug in's will not be on consoles, so just things like quests and items? And I guess there is going to be some sort of veto/quality control system, so only the best mods go onto Xbox? After all, Bethesda need to think of things like performance hits of people loading mods on consoles, especially things with high quality textures.

I also assume this means paid mods will be making a return for Fallout 4, though that is entirely speculation on my part.

I believe an Unreal game on PS3 had mod support also, though I am unsure how that turned out.

That's actually pretty cool, I hope the Playstation 4 can manage something similar to keep with it's rival.

This has been my favourite E3 ever. I know really big mods will most likely never get onto consoles, especially ones involving script extenders, but even just to have a few small weapon, armour or quest mods will be enough.

I'm not a huge Microsoft fan, but I'm a little bit more impressed by what I've seen from their announcements this year. Just in general, the announcements so far have been pretty exciting.

So paid mods are all but confirmed. Great. Good going Bethesda.
Free of charge according to Todd Howard.
got a source on that? People are pretty worried about Bethesda.net being nothing but paid mods returned without Valve as a middle man.

From the mouth of the man himself.

Yeah, the I doubt Sony would let this go free.
I can only imagine it will also be available for the PS4.

Though the Xbone's new backwards compatibility. Now that I can love, even if I don't have the console. Well, because it can mean I can still play the 360 games even when I upgrade. Just like the Fallout 4 mods, I bet Sony will also want to do this now.

You can play selected 360 games, only 100 titles will have backwards compatibility, all of which are ones published by Microsoft. Xbone can't actually emulate Xbox 360, so Microsoft is simply porting their old games to x86 and offering them as a free download if you put your old 360 game into your Xbox One. The third parties aren't likely to adopt this scheme, as it would mean they wouldn't be able to sell remasters of last gen games.

Todd Howard confirmed a bit ago that PS4 will have mods, though I don't think anyone really doubted that. Both Bethesda and Sony would have to be insane not to get it on PS4. So good news all around for us poor console peasants, free content!

Well, the XBone's backwards compatibility is only confirmed for 100 360 games, and I think it's more of a downloadable emulation type-thing rather than reading them off the 360 discs. And I can't see the PS4 being capable of BC, not just because it's far more profitable for Sony to just rerelease games it chooses for the PS4, but also because of the PS3's wacky architecture that would make emulation really hard.

Anyway, PC has the ultimate backwards compatibility, so I'm still good.

About XBone mods, I don't think that'll end well, or at least nowhere near the capacity that PC has. They were right, many gaming PC's already eclipse what current gen is capable of, and with the absence of script extenders and the like, the consoles will be somewhat limited in what they can apply, considering the amazing stuff modders are going to come up with for Fallout 4. But, anyway, best of luck to Bethesda for trying, maybe it'll work out. Still don't think paid mods'll be a thing though; I know Microsoft gets a bad rap for charging for everything, but I'd say the downsides of such a scheme have been made abundantly clear to anyone trying to push it.

Could happen in the future, but I wouldn't say console mods'll be the catalyst for it.

Not sure what E3 conference you watched...
The initial release will encompass 100 games with dozens more coming within a few months, but they have already said they have to get permission and it will take a while and some companies will say no and that is not Microsofts fault in any way.
They said any 3rd party dev/pub can do it they merely have to give permission it's zero work on their part
Rainbow 6 Vegas 1/2 and Borderlands have been announced for the scheme and none were published by Microsoft
Of course most of the titles at first will be Microsoft published titles as they don't need to ask permission for those...

*Groans*
I was being too optimistic.
Why can't we good things?!

Good, good. Now let us all hope that nothing bad is attached to this. Something like that usually happens after this, but hey, it might not happen. Anyway, I look forward to mods, though I wonder how the modding community will react to this? Will it be more or less difficult?

That and it is still the moddable top dog.
Damn though, I'm impressed all three of you responded that quickly. :p

As for the third party backwards compatibility thing I think some devs will allow their games to be put onto the list. Fallout NV I can see coming through, the lego games, Skyrim and maybe some Valve stuff. You know, nice people who have enough money, if there is ever enough.

Also when you have enough free time there is never a respond time too quick.

Indeed, adding open modding support would also make piracy (DLC) easier and without having to chip the console. I don't think MS is going to let that shit fly.
