About 2 years ago I managed to get hold of a copy of Fallout 1 and 2. Both are great games but unfortunately ever since then all the other RPGs I've played have seemed a bit rubbish in comparison, even ones I used to love before playing Fallout I just find it difficult to be engaged by them or to take them seriously. Are there any other RPGs that can compare or am I doomed to never enjoy another RPG ever again?

You have encountered what is known as the "Metroid effect".

Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape: Torment

Two best RPGs ever made. Fallout 2 takes third place at best. Have fun ;)

You might want to check out BioWare's RPGs. If you're looking for expansive, story driven RPGs, they're your go-to guys.

Oblivion. Best RPG I've ever played. In most others I just do the main quests and a few side quests but in Oblivion I want to do every single quest in the game!

I have this problem when trying to compare any RPG to the Baldur's Gate saga.
Basically, you just have to try and look at the game while not thinking of Fallout.

See if the RPG can stand on its own merit, before trying to compare.
It's hard, I know, but it can be done.

Maybe you should try some other sub-genre for a chance... Something that relies on something else than a conversation system, assuming that was what you found exceptional.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 will hardly out-do Fallout 1 and 2. So I suggest you go for something different alltogether instead of trying to find something you'll immediately compare to Fallout games.

It's hard to enjoy any game if you don't play them for what they are, you know.

Once you go Fallout, you never go back.

..The humor is kind off lost with the fact that it doesn't rhyme.

Planescape:Torment mate, that should do the trick.

Otherwise, another game strongly influenced by the fallout games although not an RPG per se would be Jagged Alliance 2 with the amazing v1.13 mod (http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/). 6 bucks DRM-free at Good Old Games.

And c'mon, Oblivion and Fallout 3? Seriously, guys you're not helping.

Heh, I tried Fallout 2 this year after having played Oblivion, Fallout 3 and some other stuff from Bioware.
And I hated it. It was an overhyped piece of shit. In my opinion at least, which I'm trying to force on you as hard as I can.

Once you go Fallout, you never get your balls out?

I completely understand. Fortunately, BioWare keeps pumping out enough quality RPGs to get me through.

Try to find a copy of Arcanum, then some of the user made patches to fix the bugs.

Ninja-ed but it was inspired heavily by fallout but more of a standard fantasy setting. On it's own right it is a decent RPG though. Has a solid and unique story line coupled with a feeling your actions in the world are changing things, for better or worse. Something a great deal of RPGs fail to grasp these days.
