Hey now, Obsidian has done this before! I mean, they made Fallout... 2.

And Knights of the Old Republic... 2.

And they're not using that same engine Bethesda does that's buggier than all hell and... oh, they are.

So... yeeeeeeeeah.
Fallout 2 was made by Black Isle Studios under Interplay... and we all know what Interplay did to Van Buren and Black Isle Studios. They're hardly the best Publisher to deal with. The team was also larger for the first Fallout than it was for Fallout 2 -- admittedly most were artists and such, but in the end they lacked the same team or time. Obsidian only has a fracture of the Black Isle Studios team from Fallout 2, the rest went to Troika and I think Activision was the Publisher for them - at the time of death - and subsequently killed them, possibly inadvertently.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 was given barely any time to polish. They wanted to make a grand game, but Lucas Arts cut them off for the sake of making it out before Christmas. There was barely anything done, the fact the game was cut up meant they didn't even get a chance to reach their expected deadline and was surprised with horror when Lucas Arts said, "It's done."

And now we're with Bethesda's Parent Company owning Fallout and leaving this "sequel" in the hands of Obsidian... and ZeniMax seem to be the type to give them enough time and enough of a heads up. The game may yet surprise you.

But hey, hype kills a game. So if you think it's going to be shit... it's bound to be better than you think.

And who am I? A blob in denial, a blob that wants this game to succeed. Not the best thing ever, but at least be a worthy succession.

1. for those looking for how you find the pip-boy, read the fallout new vagas first look on this site.

2. It couldn't be a DLC or an expansion because they've spent a lot of time working on the character backstories (and abilities) which you could only need if you have a whole new story. Plus, they are going to add features.

My tip: Take yatzee's suggestion and assume the game is piss until you buy it. That will give you more entertainment value for whatever entertainment you think there is and if it's bad you get to say "I told you so!".

No, Team Gizka is dead. I checked their website. It doesn't exist.

And, I don't want to start any arguments here, but how do you know that BioWare, with the same limitations, would produce a much better project?
I don't; they're just the better developer. I was predicting, obviously we can't tell for certain.

And what was that shit about not being able to enter the water city and then having someone tell you to go there later?
I really don't know what you're talking about...

I feel what you're saying, including the rest of your posts in this thread. You are pretty much dead on.

Obsidian is a developer with great ideas, be it when taking over existing franchises or making their own. They have tons of creativity, solid writing that could rival Bioware's, and gameplay mechanics that look awesome in theory. However, they suck at making games. They suck at making graphics, they suck at programming, they suck at implementing all their cool ideas. And then all they have are excuses.

KotOR2 had some great stuff in it, but in all fairness, the gameplay, the combat and all that was mostly the stuff Bioware made before. Obsidian had half the game resources ready for them, and they still failed the deadlines and eventually Lucas was fed up with the delays. The result was a game that could have been great but was good for the first half and mediocre at best for the second.

NWN2 was a mess. In all fairness, the game is clunky, slow and not that much fun to play. Also, it features some of the ugliest character models this side of Oblivion. The game looks great on paper, when you list all the features, but when it comes to actually playing it, it's just not fun. Also, the bugs, the atrociously coded engine, the shitty controls. Again, a mediocre overall product that wasn't a total disaster because it was filling a not-too-filled nieche (D&D RPGs).

From what I understand, Alpha Protocol follows this pattern, with great ideas, a great story, some excellent mechanics, but overall broken gameplay, ugly graphics, mountains of bugs and overall an unfinished game.

As for New Vegas, they did get all the resources from Bethesda, so there's less for them to screw up. I'm not worried about the story and the writing, since they have shown they can handle that. Hopefully, this will be the game where they finally get their shit together. I was hoping AP would be that game, but sadly it wasn't.

Maybe it would be best if Obsidian was absorbed by Bioware or some other competent developer, and then provided with the people who'll be able to put all their good ideas into practice...

P.S. I miss Troika...

Troika was the better half of Black Isle Studio's breakup. Or at least when it came to programming the game... if only they synced up with Obsidian to bring themselves whole again.

I hope the aiming system will be better than before, it was hard as hell trying to aim in Fallout 3

It seems very much like Fallout 3, with a new wasteland to explore and a few twists and turns to gameplay. Which is exactly what I'm hoping for!

Definitely still on my "must-have" list.

You could aim down the sight in Fallout 3...?

Im intrigued by that friendly mutant. Mabye Fawkes escaped and is raising an army for good. That'd be epic.

Umm...why did the player have a pipboy? Was the character a vault dweller(I dont believe so)? If not, that seems kinda lazy not to invent a new inventory/map/status screen. Little things like that break games for me.

Hopefully the story explains it.
I believe your character is from a vault, some screenshots showed him wearing a vault outfit.
Nope, he is not. You can find the suit however.

somewhere I read that he/she is from a vault, but you have been outside for a long time before the game starts. could be wrong, but I think I read that on some post.
No, you're all wrong. Your character is a courier who was shot in the head and left to die. A friendly robot finds you and takes you back to a Doctor who fixes you up. This is where you choose your looks and skills. He gives you a pipboy and an old vault suit since the doctor used to be a vault dweller. This is all been CONFIRMED.

see: http://www.gametrailers.com/news/fallout-new-vegas-details/1712

so now we have a link the supports Nev Vegas possibly having multiple beginnings AND keeping the basic storyline the same for every charater.

critical thinking should be used before you attempt to claim that everyone is wrong, since right now I am laughing that since you think that main story = only one character back-story.

That's probably just mere speculation because in magazines that have come out recently and information given out by Obsidian, you ARE a courier and everything i've just said has been confirmed.

You know, this reminds me of back when I was getting excited for Fallout 3 and watching all the preview videos as soon as I could and looked up everything I could...

I really hope they don't mess this up, and by the looks of it they will be... it seems like they're taking the Fallout 3 model and shoving extra crap down its throat... but who knows, this could turn out better than I expect.

Apart from the weapons that looked like fallout 3 to me.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I saw the first shot of him walking around and I could see no changes whatsoever...
They're both nuclear wastelands, how could they different?

Aside from the mention of aiming down the sights of weapons...I see no real change from Fallout 3. I couldn't be happier XD

obsidian IS lazy, they never invent anything, they use the same engine as the last game and they still manage to screw it up.

On the West Coast, Super Mutants have been non-hostile for a while. A good example is the town of Broken Hills in Fallout 2.

It wasn't literal ironsight aiming, just a slight zoom in.

For one thing... they're on different sides of America... I know that they would all look quite similar, but this looks copy-pasted straight out of Fallout 3. The design is nearly exactly the same, but they could have at least thrown in a bit more buildings and slightly different setpieces. Of course, I could explore the wasteland of Fallout 3 for hours, so maybe that's not too much of a problem. Also, this is just one little clip from it and they could be holding a lot back.
