1. Be glad its not a Fallout 3 deathclaw.

2. Run backwards while shooting, stopping only to use stimpacks etc. or switch weapons

3. If you die, try a different route to Boulder city. The road from Novac is usually clear, if long.
What do you mean be happy they aren't like in fallout 3, those things where about as strong as a 2 legged nightstalker, When the miners in sloan told me there where deathclaws ahead and told me I wasn't strong enough(lvl 4) I laughed at them for fearing puny deathclaws after killing one yonug one I ran into an adult........ it wouldn't die IT JUST WOULDN'T DIE! OH GOD THE HUMANITY.

I keep reading about "don't use the shotguns" on here. Well, I did. Slug rounds pumped through a Caravan shotgun with the "Shotgun Surgeon" perk works more wonders than one might think. Maybe not the most efficient extermination but it worked for me.

I had to reload and kill both deathclaws right after another using the same strategy. The first one only triggered one mine before Boone and I had to blow it away. The second one triggered both and I didn't even need Boone's help with that one.

In short, Level 11 + Slug Rounds + Mines + Boone = Win.

Also, sniper rifles are for wimps. I always breath on my target right before it loses its face.

How'd you get Lucky? It's in the Bison Steve casino but you have to have 75 points in lockpick to get it?
Well, I figure I've always been Lucky. I mean, I've done a lot with this character at relatively low levels and- oh wait.

I used a console command to pop open the safe Lucky was in. I wanted a signature weapon for my new gunslinger and that was the most obvious choice.

You have Boone with you?

How is there a problem?
haha this, that guy is a freaking boss radar, ill be running along without a care in the world while he's picking off enemies miles off that have no intention of getting anywhere near us, he is a walking death trap for anything with a head.

I wish they had automatic unlocking devices in Fallout (like the ones in Deus Ex)

Since we're on the topic of New Vegas, can I ask how you guys put up with companions? They drive me crazy, as they did in FO3 and Oblivion. Always getting stuck due to pathing issues, and constantly bugging out. I used Boone for about 5 minutes before he got stuck in a sulfur mine(Not sure of the name) and the game had to be reloaded. Furthermore, they always get in the way during indoor firefights, randomly get stuck in combat or perma-die after 1 encounter with a cazador because they can't use antivenom. Gah. Game is easy enough solo. (Though if someone knows of a mod to make them less prone to getting stuck, I might use them as pack mules)

delusions of grandeur ... Okay captcha
you must be playing the wrong game...

boone rapes harder than you do.period. (especially against cazador's)

and anytime they get stuck/can't follow you as you fall down a canyonside or something, the game instantly sticks a fire under their ass and they catch up to you within a few seconds taking the longer way around

plus it's not like you are forced to interact with them or have them anywhere near you when you go somewhere/do something, they will spawn with you anytime you go through a door or anything, so i don't see the complaint there..

You've never faced a Deathclaw in the original Fallout, have you? Or, for that matter, an Enclave party in Fallout 2. Those were real threats. A Fallout 3 Deathclaw is about as piss-easy as it gets.
Not to sound like a biased old fan but... this guy has a point. The newer deathclaws are no pushover, but the first Deathclaw in Fallout was like a hazing ritual. I only managed to kill that monster with a super sledge (best melee weapon in the game, mind) and critically hitting its EYES a few times. Although it can be equally satisfying to luck out and just barely manage to cut one down at a low level in the newer games.

The easiest way to kill deathclaws at that level is to get a sniper rifle. There is a "free one" that needs repair at the bloody NCR camp outside of new vegas, and a couple of other ones around (you can always repair cheaply with repair kits). Then either pop a stealth boy or crouch sneak at a long, long range. (Deathclaws have AMAZING perception).

Then, don't use VATS, and just aim for the head...BLAM BLAM BLAM. You can snipe a hell of a lot more accurately and from a longer distance away if you just free aim it. Try it out.
There's the best sniper rifle in the game (until Old World Blues at least) at the Sniper Roost that overlooks Cottonwood Cove. It's not even guarded. But you do need 100 lockpick to access it.

-DEATHCLAWS!-
Allow me.

It's never enough to try and cripple limbs. That only means you can JUST outrun a Deathclaw, should you care to run away. Here, let me tell you what I know of dealing with Deathclaws. Fallout 3 and New Vegas has forced me to stay on my toes. But don't worry. Jack gets results.

Deathclaws

The thing about Deathclaws is also the thing about quite alot of things out in the wasteland. They find it rather hard to do anything if you are, say, up on a rock, or even just on a steep hill. The high ground is very important, Anakin. Incidentally, I would say if you don't have the Shotgun Surgeon perk, get it. If you don't have Bloody Mess, get it. Deathclaws require higher levels of damage. My courier is built for crazy criticals. He has Luck 10 and I built him for that, which means I started playing with fate more than physique. Nevertheless, the thing is that Deathclaws demand something long-range and nasty at times. If you can ever get at one from a vantage point where it can't jump, do it. Pour the juice on. Fact is, there's alot of times where energy weapons are better. This is one of them.

Blind Deathclaws

I don't care what anyone says. They aren't nearly as blind or in the dark as they seem. Treat Blind Deathclaw AS Deathclaws in action. The only thing of REAL difference is that they might have less accuracy because their vision is supposedly impaired. But then, they hear and smell, right? And they know their territory? Yeah, I don't think blindness matters. Just saying.

Alpha, Matriarch, and Legendary Deathclaw

If you didn't know they stepped up Deathclaws in New Vegas, then allow me to be the one to inform you. If you did, here's what I know.

Alpha is king of the brood. He is fast and he is deadly as hell. He can one-hit you, despite high-end combat armor probably, even when you get stronger. He's the father of the adults you've probably been seeing, noted for being bigger and faster. The Matriarch is, of course, the mother Deathclaw, noted by having horns that face backwards, not forwards. Also, she is big. You don't want to get near her. She gets special berserk powers if you kill her babies. Do keep that in mind. Legendary is like father to an Alpha, probably. About the same disign creature, but more menacing. I got rather lucky with mine. He apparently didn't see me and kept pacing around. I've no doubts about HIS power, though.

Deathclaws are usually best dealt with at a distance and especially without them knowing that you're going to attack. If you're going to attack any of these three, make for fucking sure that you are somewhere that is highly-inaccessable to them or where you can jump off a hill or something that delays them attacking you. I killed my Matriarch with a sniper rifle when she was a speck in my crosshairs, too far away for her to detect me. And you know what? I am never getting closer. Additionally, there are ideal weapons to go after for this. If you took Wild Wasteland, then you can find an alien blaster, for instance. (Take note that there is actually a laser gun with a high ammo consumption that is the same power as the alien blaster.)

Firstly you have to make sure your character is well nourished .. get some Protein in you, then take all your med-X, Jet or whatever you have, next it's very important to stay hydrated ... drink all your colas, water and sunset sasperella ... because in about 20 - 30 minutes all that liquid will be converted to nourishing, good quality piss ... better to drink it all ... then run at the deathclaw with your knife.

I don't see fear and death ... all i see is PROTEIN!!!!!!

That's right. Level 11 and I killed a Deathclaw with a starter shotgun.
I killed one at level 6 with boxing tape and a kitchen knife. No joke. Not a way I'd recommend but if you keep dancing it can work. In out, round and round, don't get so far away he jumps, use cross and uppercut at the right time in vats to teleport around lunges and swipes. Tons of fun, but I wanted to get to vegas early and he was spotting me even with the stealthboy I had handy.

Trying to kill a Deathclaw at Lv11...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Go back once you are at least LV 20-25.
The don't even try to get close to it.
Snipe it and use Grenades, let your companions do most of the close quarters work.
And Crippling the legs and arms will help.
They aren't dangerous unless they get right up close to you. I cleared the Quarry out at level 12 with a modded cowboy repeater (fire rate and condition mods + hand load rounds) with Boone and ED-E. I sneak attacked em then drew them into range of my companions. Only the Alpha male got close enough to swing at us, but it died a few seconds later to VATS head shots and Boone's crits.

Distance is your best friend when fighting strong foes. Doubly so if you have Boone with you.
True, but they can get up to you very very quickly.
Thing with me was i had no idea where all the wandering ones were so id run into one, run away, and suddenly a group of 5 were on me.
I eventually got a sniper rifle and snuck into the quarry, got to the rock transporter thing in the center and perched myself on the top of it.
Veronica and ED:E kept the ones that tried to climb up to me off, and i took down the Alpha male easily.
For the queen i got close and plasma grenaded everything.

I once hunted Deathclaws by sniping at them with a Hunting Rifle from the top of a hill then letting Arcade pick them off as they ran up to me. Took out about a dozen before the rest got me.

I believe you are now ready to take on Dead Wind Cavern.

Go to that cave my friend and do not fear the Legendary Deathclaw that resides in it .... I have faith in you.
