In my playthough I'm at Lvl 12 and I'm making my way to New Vegas, with around 75 points in both Guns and Sneak. You may have guessed from this is that the way I like to approach enemies is to creep up to them hidden and to crit headshot them. At the moment I have an unmodded Cowboy Repeater and a Hunting Rifle. I'm not a big fan of the sights on the repeater and I don't do well with the Hunting Rifle from a distance. I've been on the lookout for sniper rifles but I haven't found any yet. So what I'm wondering is what is the best weapon for my current build and/or what are the best mods I can put on them?

At that skill level you may be able to do Vault 34. It's southwest of Vegas, and highly radioactive. Basically, the vault's gimmick is guns for everyone, so if you make it to the armory you will basically be set for the rest of your playthrough. Other than that, try the Brotherhood of Steel and the Boomers.

Definitely Sniper, only problem is that they appear somewhat late in the merchant's inventory.

What you can do to get one soon though is go to camp McCarran, there's one on the bed where 1st recon is, it's badly damaged but once repaired it's just fine, it's also "un-owned" so it's not stealing to take it.

For the longest time the Varmint Rifle with the silencer and scope was my weapon of choice. With full Guns and Sneak (with help from buffs) I never needed much else. I did have to upgrade around level 15-16 which is when I got the Hunting Rifle with a scope. Fuck the Sniper Rifle, compared to the scoped Hunting Rifle it's a joke.

A silenced 10mm pistol should fit the bill. You won't get a sniper rifle for a bit I think, but the hunting rifle is a good weapon, you might want to get the scope mod though.

Get a scope for the hunting rifle and your aiming problem shouldn't be a problem. That and the brush carbine were my favorite guns.

A gun wot shoots bullets would be cool to have. But seriously, fully upgraded hunting rifle was a lot of fun for me.

If your looking for a sniper and have caps, the arms dealer woman at the I88 trading post usually has one. She usually also has copious amounts of ammo and mods for it too. Hunting rifle scope may be of considerable use to you if you can find one; same woman may such a mod, plus the other hunting rifle mods.

OP: Look here [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons#Guns] and sort by whatever stat you wish. Then go find the Gun you want.

And I do so love A Light Shining In The Darkness. I prefer pistols over rifles, though.

Also I think you will be able to buy the antimaterial rifle from the gun runners around level 16 or so. They should already be able to sell you a regular sniper.
Expensive as hell though, especially for a lower leveled player. Also, I read on the wiki that firing this gun fully repaired amounts to like 17 or 18 caps per shot (Due to ammo costs and decay you'll have to repair). Still, it is the best rifle weapon in the game, and pretty much one or two shots deathclaws with sneak.

Haha yeah he probably would want to get a shottie at the very least before doing that. I remember doing it with a cowboy repeater on my first playthrough, but I also remember reloading saves a lot. The second time around I wised up and went there with the Matter Modulator and Veronica wearing a full suit of Brotherhood armor.

I always went with the Hunting Rifle with scope/magazine/action upgrades.

That or the YCS/186 Gauss Rifle, the other energy weapons sucked, imho, because the piles of dust/goo never went away.

Screw all the guns you currently have and your build and get a Gauss Rifle and let the mayhem commence!!

God, I hate that vault. I only went through it once in my three playthroughs. Ghouls freak me out. That vault is my nemesis.

Go to the Broc Flower Caves.

Find "Ratslayer."

It's a unique Varmint Rifle with the night vision scope, suppressor, and extended magazine mods built in. With high Guns and Sneak it's pretty ridiculously deadly for the vast majority of the game, particularly when used for long-range sniping (AKA: plinking away at distant targets who are completely unaware of your presence and chaining an infinite number of Sneak Attack criticals on them).

It uses extremely common ammunition, it's pretty durable, and it's also incredibly easy to maintain as Varmint Rifles are incredibly common and dirt cheap if you need to buy one to repair with.

12.7mm pistol feels so powerful, especially when playing over the shoulder (something I've found really fun to do recently)

Plasma Caster, Recharger Rifle, Gauss Rifle, Energy Weapons skill at 100.

No problems... ever.
