The Lord of a rings was a terrible book(Too long winded with too little happening)
To Kill a Mockingbird was a terrible book adaptation because it misses so much of the source material.

On topic, I can't seem to remember any good books that made good movies. Let me look...

I didn't know that Fight Club, Swampshank Redemption, Jurassic Park were books... so, my vote goes for them.

Has anyone else seen the silent film version of "Call of Cthulhu?"

It goes without saying that the story is divine, but I found the silent film (made just recently) brought the visual atmosphere of the story to life while focusing exclusively on the root themes of insignificance and terror.

Both story and film were terrific.
Now what would happen if they did a remake of it? (my opinion? Cthulhu would be pissed)

Back on topic though, John Carpenter's 'The Thing' anyone?

Fight Club and The Princess Bride would be my favorites, based on a book or not those are just plain my two favorite movies. Period.

You can probably list most, if not all, of Crichton's films here. The books are good enough that even a decent film adaptation makes a good movie. Sphere, Jurassic Park, Congo, Eaters of the Dead / The 13th Warrior, Rising Sun, Timeline, Disclosure... all good. The Andromeda Strain was very good, I heard about a recent film but I'm talking about the early 70's one. A couple of the Tom Clancy books got decent movies, but they got some crappy movies too. Hunt For the Red October was easily the best film of the bunch, but some of the better books got the worst movies. Shame, that.

Well you took Lord of the Rings so that...leaves nothing for me to say.

Everything else was crap.
Everything else was crap by comparison, that much is certainly true.

A Scanner Darkly. Well, to be honest, I never read the book. But, I doubt it matters since it's Phillip K. Dick and as someone already put...Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

And after sort of cheating because I couldn't think of any others, I found these gems that I almost forgot about.

LA Confidential
Jungle Book
Alice in Wonderland
Schindler's List

Hey hey, first post. My vote goes for 'A boy and his dog'. GREAT BOOK, by Harlan Ellison, and good movie(1975). Post-apocolyptica with a dry sense of humor headlined as "A rather kinky tale of survival".

I'm surprised(or maybe just ignorant to it happening) that the books, and film adaptations, of George Orwell haven't been mentioned.

...and as already stated Phillip K. Dick and any movies based on his works are completely sick.

Er...hello? The Shining? One of the greatest horror films of all time? Based on a Steven King book? How come nobody else said this?!

LOTR is the one that has come closest to excellence in both forms, with the film dropping slightly against the book. I can't agree with To Kill A Mockingbird, as it entirely missed what the book is about.

Okay for me, has to be Holes. Great novel and a beloved film.
