Charizard hands down was and probably still is my favourite.

On Pokemon Red I used to get a bit pissed off if he got KO'd in a battle as he was MY CHARIZARD!

Dragonite, easy. So big. So powerful. So mysterious. So friendly looking. BUT HE PACKS A NASTY HYPER BEAM DAMNIT!

Also, Schyther. Ninja grasshopper pokémon with blades. Doesn't get more awesome than that.

EDIT: The three legendary birds, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres names all ends with the spanish words for 'one', 'two' and 'three' (uno, dos, tres). Just a fun fact I thought every Pokéfreak should know.

From a storyline standpoint, you can not argue against Mewtwo. But my personal favorite of the originals was either Zapdos, Mr. Mime, or Nidoking.
