Hester Shaw was her name, and apparently the series is called The Mortal Engines Quartet in the UK, and Grike is Shrike in the UK as well.
Just to make a point, Hester Shaw and Shrike are the proper names, since the books were written by a British author (note if the author was American then I would have no problem with calling it the Jungry Cities Chronicles or calling Shrike Grike instead. Just wanted to let you know the proper names, sorry if I'm nit-picking).

Roland Deschain and Walter O' Dim - These characters have such depth as two complete opposites.

Macbeth - Such a tragic downfall so beautifully portrayed. The twist at the end...with the "woods moving in around" was a great ending.
I was about to say these, curse you!
But I would have to say Brutus from Julius Caesar because the tragic hero is always the one that attracts the most pity, thus the title "Tragic Hero".
Also, James Eric Gardener from The Tommyknockers because of where he goes batshit bonkers and beats up a fat guy with an umbrella.
Douglas "Duddits" Cavell from Dreamcatcher pulled a few heart-strings with me.
Finally, Hannibal Lector for sheer bad-assery.

Jesus.
I'm sorry, but Jesus kicks ass.
I mean, he's one of the most ancient, truly 1337* characters in literature.
Being the son of the only God, water into wine, having an ancient auto-phoenix ability, 'n what not.
You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate that aspect of the religion.
Jesus>Sephiropth.

Sounds like a sue.

With that in mind I'm quite partial to drizzt, alana from the lioness quartet and G&F.

A mary sue, google it as the full explanation probably wouldn't be under the minimum character limit.

It was said in jest though, sort of anyway.

Richard, Nicci and Cara from Sword of Truth.
Lan and Mat from Wheel of Time.
Most of the Dark Tower characters.
John Frusciante from Scar Tissue (it's an autobiography, so it counts as a book)
Tyler Durden from Fight Club.

Edit: Anyone who says Edward from twilight should gtfo.

I've just finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird, and I have to say that Atticus Finch is the most awesome individual that I ever did see.
Yes, he outstrips Drizzt Do'Urden, FitzChivalry Farseer, Cadderly Bonaduce, Sam Vimes, Terry Pratchett's Death and even Granny Weatherwax.

Anita Blake from the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton. Kick ass woman. I definitely look up to her.

Asher from the Anita Blake series. *le sigh* So beautiful in my mind even with the scars. THE most beautiful vampire ever to grace the pages of a book (Sorry Edward Cullen fans...It's the truth. Edward has NOTHING on Asher)

Nathaniel Graison from the Anita Blake series. Lavender eyes, gorgeous, ankle length auburn hair. Plus he's a wereleopard.

(NOTE: This is my favourite series. If you haven't read it, READ IT NOW! The first book is called Guilty Pleasures. It is by Laurell K Hamilton and can be found in the fantasy fiction section of your bookstore. Ask if you can't see it. Ask me for more details if you want. THE best vampire series I have read. Ever.)

Daniel from 'Voice of the Blood' by Jemiah Jefferson. Another gorgeous vampire to boot.

Marianne Engel from 'The Gargoyle' by Andrew Davidson. Such a beautiful book. Beautiful story.

Murtagh from the Inheritance Cycle. (surprised no one else mentioned these books yet actually)

Fred and George Weasly from Harry Potter.

Peeves, again from Harry Potter.

Oliver Wood. From Harry Potter. (I liked him even more after I saw the first movie, but that was just my newly found hormones saying hello lol. I'm over it now...mostly)

I'm surprised noone mentioned him sooner. Personally, I like Jacob Black better.

Artemis Fowl.
Thank you. I was waiting for someone to mention Arty. I like Butler. And Chix Verbil is a good bit part in the books. Have you read all of them?

I'll stop now.
