My 'favorite' double standard is the one dealing with acceptable exposure.

If a man takes off his shirt to flaunt what he's got, he's a manly man that it's okay for children to look up to. Said flaunting of physique might even help him to become governor some day (as well as to sire an illegitimate child or two along the way).

If a woman takes off her shirt for so much as ventilation, she's a shameless harlot whose going to corrupt the children of the world (maybe even her own child if she was about to breastfeed her/him?) and a disgrace to society.

Current "favorite" Gays have to deal with straight romance in stuff, but if a straight guy gets hit on by a gay alien in some big name game, its a bad game!
I think that's just the awkwardness of being hit on by someone you aren't attracted to, period. Nothing about "bad games" or anything (unless you mean "bad" in the sense of "I don't play games to have to deal with things I find awkward in real life").

I've had ugly chicks hit on me, and I've had gay guys hit on me, and I felt weirded out by both.

OT: Not sure if this is precisely a double standard, but:

I'm constantly annoyed when people assume that "Smart = nerdy" or that "nerdy = smart". A lot of people I know are completely fucking retarded (in every sense of the word), and "nerds", and they act like they're goddamn geniuses. Similarly, a lot of people in my AP class are smart, sure, but they assume that makes them nerds. It makes me want to slapahoe. Just because you played Pokemon when you were younger doesn't make you a nerd. Having read classic literature doesn't make you a nerd. It is the accumulation of several traits that makes you a nerd, not just one or two.

A similar "not exactly a double standard" that bugs me:

There are plenty of scholarships related to your race and gender, but it's all one way. Minorities (in the Politically Correct sense of the term, not a regional one) get plenty, as do women, but if you're a white male, clearly you've never suffered hardship, and clearly your parents have enough money to pay for college, so you don't get a scholarship, *****. Now fuck off.

If your key opens many locks then you have a master key.

If your lock is opened by many keys then you just have a shitty lock.

Not necessarily a belief of mine, but I found it the above amusing lol.

Well, I was reffering to the people freaking out about the gay thing in Mass Effect 3.

As for being hit on by the sex you dont like, its not wrong (but is rude) to maybe get a bit bothered by it, but there are people who will do terrible things sometimes if they got hit on by say,the same sex (and were straight). Or atleast say so, which is still bad.

Side: As for the nerd thing, I consider what makes a nerd to be interests, and thus call myself one for my love of video games, DnD, MtG and other similar interests.

They can show countless people being slaughtered in movies, but the moment you kill one cute lil' puppy they ask you to leave the theatre!

Joke shamelessly taken from somewhere I can't remember aside, I don't get all up in arms about double standards. Things are usually more complicated than saying "they do it, so why can't I?"

I hate to go off topic... well, not really.

Anyway, what's the name of the show you got your avatar from? I remember watching it as a kid. I looked up C6 but all I got was cellphones and cars.

I know you referring to ME3, that's what my point was: People don't want to play a game that reminds them of awkward things from real life (In this case, being hit on by people you aren't attracted to). Or at least, most people don't. Personally, I play video games as a form of escapism (Related, I think I just figured out why this magazine is called "The Escapist", damn I'm dumb). In video games I'm a perfect looking person who can pull off amazing feats, speak flawlessly, convince others of the validity of my point of view, and I get to fuck a hot member of the opposite sex at the end of the day. In real life, I'm a below-average looking person who doesn't do shit, trips over himself when explaining anything complex, and who only attracts the interest of gay men and ugly (sometimes on the outside, sometimes on the inside, sometimes both) women.

I can understand why someone wouldn't want a gay alien hitting on them in a video game, because I (personally) get enough of that shit in my normal day.

Honestly, I thought that the guy a while back saying he wanted a "no gay" option in ME3 wasn't that far off. He phrased it terribly, but I would like to be able to at least toggle an option ahead of time during character creation that establishes my sexuality, so that I don't have to be hit on by the same sex if I don't want to be.

EDIT: Didn't mention this originally, but: I don't think for a second (from an idealistic perspective) that only straight men should have this option. Ideally, gay men who feel similarly (but in reverse) should get the same choice. Realistically, that wouldn't happen, because straight people outnumber gay people, and companies only care about the large market share (which they should, really). But morally speaking, I don't think for a second that I'm different from a gay guy with the opposite problem as me. He should get the same "no straight" option as I get.

It's Cybersix.

You're not the first to ask. Maybe I should edit the full name on there, hehe.

Yea, and men don't have tits, either. *facepalm*

Go down to a beach this summer. I can guarantee the skimpiest beach-wear you'll see is that on a female. You're not going to see a dude on the beach wearing nothing but a thong.

Unless you live near a nude beach, of course, in which case disregard this =P
Structurally speaking, there is absolutely no difference between men and women's breasts. The main differences are in fat levels. Same nipples, same mammary glands.
Besides that, the fact that the guy you mentioned is wearing nothing but thong bottoms, that makes it more skimpy than what the hypothetical women on the beach can legally wear most anywhere.

If you want a video game thats made to order, make one yourself. You cant control everything in a game. I hated say, the water temple in Ocarina of Time. But if I wanted to continue, I had to get through it. Its a low point in the game, and is not fun at all to me, but the game itself is full of fun, and if I wanted more, I had to do this. Thats how I tihnk people who dont like it should view it. Until the game comes out and I see it for myself, I cant say exactly how I view it, but the idea of making it an option to toggle on and off...its extreme really. Why not make everygame be full of a list to toggle every part of the game them just because some people wont like every single bit?
And as you said, when you play video games, you are not playing yourself really. Why not embrace this? I do. My ME character is a disciplined straight man who is a strong and capable leader in the face of great hardship. I am none of that. I am no man, I am rather cowardly in danger, and I certainly am not attracted to women. I dont get offended by it though. Hell, any straight guy who is bothered so bad, can just make a female character and enjoy that straight male fantasy cliche of two women. (Which was already included in 1, but few complained so explicitly about it)

A drunk girl hits a guy and he's told to man up. The drunk guy hits the girl back in response and gets thrown out by a bouncer.

That thread still annoys me.

Any religion can talk bad about, condemn, and mock atheism.
But god forbid (No pun) any atheist make a joke degrading religion, or everyones up in arms. :/
You kidding? I always see the exact opposite. People everywhere are constantly mocking various religions (this very website, most tv (Family Guy, South Park "You're such a Jew", Simpsons, many more), most professors, most students, ect ect), but people from different religions are just supposed to take it, or suddenly they're "religious extremists" for not wanting people to talk shit about what they believe.

People don't give a damn if an atheist belittles a religion.
I am simply speaking from experience, I tend to be more tolerant of other's beliefs and cultures, while i am shunned for being an atheist.

I don't wanna start any fights or ruffle any feathers, but a very good example of this is Stephen Hawking saying "There is no heaven". Such a stink about that.

Think about this, if a good christian man wants to share the "Word of god", it doesn't seem to bother anyone. But if someone starts passing out fliers saying "Religion is Foolishness", people are pissed. ;)

My current favorite is DMT being illegal. Before I go and explain this...

I AM IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM PROMOTING THE USE OF DRUGS. EVER. Now then...

DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) is a naturally occuring psychadelic that is found, in trace amounts usually, in many plants, animals and all humans. This occurs in humans through a gland in the brain called the pineal gland, and the pineal gland is developed in the fetus roughly 49 days into the pregnancy. Yet, DMT is listed as a Schedule 1 drug in the US and for most of the International community, meaning it is illegal almost anywhere you go in the world.

So, basically what this implies is that every person, who has ever lived and currently living, is a manufacturer and user of illegal narcotics.

Boy the world workforce is gonna take a hit once that gets realized...

lolwut. Visit the local R&P forum, there's nearly nothing but anti-religious rhetoric and jokes.

OT: In the same vein, apparently I'm a twat if I speak about my religion in a positive light, as I'm "forcing it on others", but it's all well and good for atheists to tell me why I'm the idiotic twat who should reform. Talk to the hand, people.

I'm fully aware that if I want a game where I control everything I can make my own video game.

Except I can't, because I don't know how, and if you think that I could make something on par with Mass Effect, you're a fool. Beyond that, I can't make my own game that follows the plot line from Mass Effect 2, because that's illegal.

Beyond that, I was talking in terms of ideals. Ideally, we should be able to toggle every damn aspect of a game. And in the grand scheme of things, the option to skip what would likely amount to one or two lines of dialogue (assuming you turn down the gay option) wouldn't be very jarring in the game, nor would it be difficult to do (if MW2 can skip an entire fucking level, I think ME3 can deal with lacking a few sentences.

Yeah, maybe then I'm not getting the "full characterisation" or whatever, but frankly, if the only thing I'm learning is that the character is gay, I don't care. Not because I have a problem with being gay, but because I don't care either way. If BioWare suddenly claimed Garrus was gay (which after making him a Hetero romance option would be difficult), he'd still be a badass. And since I wouldn't act on him being gay, I learned nothing interesting or useful. (It's similar to the whole "Dumbledore is gay" thing from a while back. I don't care, it changed nothing, why are you telling me? It's just weird that your pressing it on me.)

Practically speaking, I'm aware that what I'm talking about wouldn't happen. But as a consumer, I get a small say in what happens. Sometimes if a few customers agree on something, it can change a company's direction. Not likely in this case, but regardless. I voiced my opinion, and clearly you disagree.

On a vaguely related note, I'm going to sleep. Because I can tell my arguments are wandering, and starting to make less sense.
