You all know you stayed in that air duct alot longer than you really needed to

On a more serious note, Leliana from Dragon Age. She was easily one of your most powerful party members when built right

my 2 cents, now with picturs XD

Samus, first, and still best

Nu from BlazBlue and Justice (yes, justice is female)from Guilty Gear, both from the same reason, they look cool, hard to beat, and fun to play as

Dizzy, cause she's awsome, and in a surprise move, a nice person, despite being a fighting games boss XD

Kat and Nina from Breath of Fire 2. Nina was just godly in this one, an i love the black wings. Kat cause she's tough, and being a kittie dosen't hurt XD

i could go on :3 been playing games long enough i could fill a page with faves, but i won't out of curisty XD

Fall-from-grace and Annah from Planescape: Torment.
Sylvanas Windrunner from Warcraft.

Everyone else has already been mentioned.

But why does everyone think GLaDOS is female? I consider an AI program to be an it, after all it has no defining male or female characteristics.
She's voiced by a woman, and then there's this:
Voice does not equal gender, I know some guys who honestly sound like chicks. Sorry, but nor does fanart like that mean it's female.

Marta from Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New Wor-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.I honestly can't think of any decent female characters in gaming, except maybe the ones in Monster Hunter because they can't speak, and thus cannot say anything retarded or something that proves they are completely unlikeable.

There are very few characters in fiction I like, and only a small portion of them are female. Likely because most game and anime writers are male, and a bunch of drooling idiots, and couldn't make every character less relatable if they were trying to. There have been moments in games where I'm supposed to be feeling sorry for the character, but instead I laugh at their tragedy. (Speaking of ToS:DotNW and hilarious "supposed to be sad" moments in gaming, ToS2 had an awesome bad ending.
Emil dies and Marta is miserable for the rest of her life. YES! YES!)

... It is at this point that I completely forgot what this topic was about and had to look at the top of my browser window. This is what happens when you start ranting.

he said girl, not trap.

anyway, I always liked the female companion you could test fire your short range spray weapon on in ME1, and Miss July from BC1. She wanted to help her boys, even though she could not. I miss her now that she's gone.

Celes Chere, Moira Brown, and the many remarkable female NPCs I've encountered in The Sims over the years---sometimes that game's random personality generator hits its mark squarely.

Damn, someone else beat me to the GitS game for the Major (who, despite being more of a manga character than a game character most of the time, would give Samus a run for her money regardless).

For a strictly game character, Zoey from L4D isn't a bad choice.

For a game character who I haven't seen anyone in the thread mention yet - and I have no idea why not (here's hoping I didn't just overlook it) - how about freaking Kerrigan?

There's a reason my SC2 forum sig comes from her. That reason is she rocks.

Honestly I like her more when she's a ghost, but then I tend to like doomed characters. Brings out the wistful in me.

"Doesn't take a telepath" indeed.

By "Favorite female characters in gaming" do you mean favorite to play as, hottest, or just favorite in general?
Most people seem to be posting the hottest. But my favorite is Kreia from Kotor 2, so bleh.
I guess I'll just list them all.
My favorite to play as is probably Lilith from Borderlands

I really like the Siren class. Plus she's not bad to look at.
Hottest is definately a more tricky choice. I'm gonna have to list a couple of my top ones.
Morrigan from Dragon Age, that saucy witch.

Drowned Ophelia from Brutal Legend
\

Kerrigan from Starcraft. Yes even in her Zerg form.

And as for favorite in general I'd definately go with Tira from the Soulcaliber series

She's hot, she's crazy, she's fun to play as, and she's close to my age. Add all that up and we have a winner.

At first, I did not think I could recall any I particularly liked. But then I remember a few.

While it may sound like a cliche (damn these forums, they don't support ´ for some reason >=() choice, I really liked Tifa from FFVII. While she does look good, I primarily liked her for he personaliry. Most "tough women" in fiction tend to be exaggerated, but Tifa acted a lot more naturally and was not afraid of her tender side.

I also liked Celes from FFVI for many of the same reasons. Plus, she acted the famous opera scene which is always a plus. :p

Lamia Loveless from Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 is preety cool. However, she technically does not count as a female character since she is an android. Plus, the fact that she appears human to the point of redundancy is kind of lame. =/

Excellen Browning from Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 1&2 is the only character I can forgive for essentially being Miss Fan Service (both literally and figuratively). Her happy-go-lucky personality is so likable that you preety much forget that she doesn't have all that much depth to her.

Special mentions go to Villetta Vadim from the same games (sadly, no good picture of her available =/) and and Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins (already mentioned by others).

GlaDOS counts as female, as the design is seriously meant to represent a female personality, even if its a bit of a stretch.

though, in that case i would still nominate curly brace: because yes.

Lilith's Siren felt absolutely broken by level 50 in Borderlands, and phase-walking is eleven kinds of fun, but...none of the playable characters in that game have any personality at all. :|

Midna from Twilight Princess. Her powers were bad-ass as she wasn't half as annoying as Navi was. Plus she kinda looked hot when she returned to normal at the end...
