Shining Force for the Sega Genesis.

My first JRPG, and nostalgia goggles are thick.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is good as well.

I will always love the Persona series! Final Fantasy is also a great series. I recently started playing Trails in the Sky which is a great classic style JRPG as well.

I never really got into any other jrpg's after the age of around twelve. I never really thought about it beyond possibly the voice acting in some of them. I always preferred text based jrpgs because I always liked the stupid voices I gave the characters in my head much better. But if I could pick a favorite I would go for the patapon series. It had a fun premise backed up by deep rpg mechanics and plenty to do after you finished each game.

I'd never heard of Persona until they mentioned it in Extra Credits, and ever since then everyone who mentions it raves about how awesome it is. I've got to try this thing out.

It is fantastic! I'd get Persona 3 personally! You can get it on PSP or PS2 I believe. If you like character driven stories and creative and thought provoking worlds you will get into it!

I'm gonna go with:

Persona 3 and Persona 4-these are some of the greatest games I have ever played. Period. Amazing atmosphere and deep combat system. The stories too. holy crap. I want Persona 5.

Chrono Trigger-Obvious reasons. I just played this a year ago and it was fantastic.

Final Fantasy VII-Cliche I know, but it is the only final fantasy that I have finished so far. I enjoyed it, and I played it for the first time a few months ago. Good game.

Pokemon-I'm counting this because I can. Pokemon is what got me into rpgs, and I still enjoy playing it. Probably because of nostalgia.

The World Ends With You-Unique and fun. Interesting gameplay.

Listing these has made me realize that I haven't finished many jrpgs.....I guess I'm not a huge fan of them, but I do like a handful.

edit: ^^^to the poster above me. do yourself a favor, and buy persona 3 or 4. At least look them up first. Fantastic.

Tales of Vesperia. First JRPG I actually bothered to complete, working on a second playthrough. The characters are just so damn awesome personality-wise. Only gripe is how the side quests are laid out, I missed 95% on them on my first run which took me 40 hours.

-cough- I had more fun with this than DA 2 on so many levels, the party AI for starters, is just amazing, and the strategy menu, which is exactly like the Dragon Age series tactics screen, while less advanced, is just more manageable [/da2rant]

ok this is gonna take a while....

My favourite would have to be FFVI. Was the one that got me hooked on JRPGs. But have since played all the Final Fantasies except 8&9, Secret of Mana's, Earthbound, Valkyria Chronicles, the list goes on.

Other ones that I highly rate and have enjoyed immensely are the Tales series, ESPECIALLY Tales of Phantasia, grab an emulator and play it, such an amazing game.

More recently have been torturing myself with Demon's Souls, so good to have a real tough challenging RPG.

Edit: OH and chronotrigger, amazing game.....

I would go with the first two Shadow Hearts games for PS2, Shadow Hearts and SH: Covenant. You may not of heard of them, but they were amazing games. Great story, interesting characters, combat is a lot of fun, just all around good games.
Have you ever tried playing them on a PS3? It might just be mine but, IT WON'T LET ME! I've gone through every SH game: 1,2&3 and they all freeze around the beginning of it. I was lucky enough to play the 3rd on my old PS2 but I don't have it anymore. T_T I can tell you honestly that the 3rd was amazing but don't get your hopes up on a sequel.

Anything Shin Megami Tensei, because they stay as close to the whole rpg aspect as it can. Giving you choice, customization and more than the good and bad ending most rpg games give you.

Y'know, I haven't played a solid JRPG since Chrono Trigger, and that didn't age well for a first-timer like me. I don't have the time commitment to put in if there aren't good characters, good believable storyline not obsessively focused on magic explaining everything, and some good combat that isn't so impossible to understand.
Since I got a PS3, I'm wondering about Tales of Vesperia, or Valkyria Chronicles, but I know nothing about the gameplay of either. Maybe I'll check which ones have a demo.

Tales of Symphonia rocks. Get a friend, sibling, or significant other to help you play it - the co-op is crazy fun.
I see so many people saying that they've only played it single-player- good to know I'm not the only one who loved playing it co-op.

Actually, all of the Tales series are quite enjoyable, at least the ones that I've played (Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia). As for non-Tales games... I loved Lost Odyssey and Resonance of Fate. I also have a strange sort of soft spot for Infinite Undiscovery. And Star Ocean 3 was pretty good too- not in the same league as the rest of my list, but definitely fun, and much better than Star Ocean 4.

A month ago I would have said Final Fantasy X. Now I say Persona 4. Another month or so from now, I can tell you if I prefer Persona 3 or Persona 4.
