The only JRPGs that I've gotten into were Final Fantasy X, Radiata Stories, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and Okami.

I would go with the first two Shadow Hearts games for PS2, Shadow Hearts and SH: Covenant. You may not of heard of them, but they were amazing games. Great story, interesting characters, combat is a lot of fun, just all around good games.
Have you ever tried playing them on a PS3? It might just be mine but, IT WON'T LET ME! I've gone through every SH game: 1,2&3 and they all freeze around the beginning of it. I was lucky enough to play the 3rd on my old PS2 but I don't have it anymore. T_T I can tell you honestly that the 3rd was amazing but don't get your hopes up on a sequel.
No, I never did. I don't have a PS3 anymore (sold it), and it wasn't a backwards compatible one. What model do you have?

And I never had a chance to play 3. As far as I was aware, it had a different cast and I didn't have much interest in it.

Dang, all my favorites have already been mentioned. XD My number one favorite, hands down, is the Shadow Hearts series. That includes the prequel, Koudelka, but Shadow Hearts: Covenant is the best game in the series IMO.

Runners-up, in no particular order, are The World Ends With You, Recettear, Final Fantasy X, and Legend of Dragoon.

Suikoden- I haven't played the others yet.
Pokemon- I still love Blue/Red, but Black/White is pretty good. Oh and the Johto generation.
Final Fantasy XIII- My first FF and I love it.
Disgaea- I finally played it and I'm eventually gonna play the others.
Golden Sun the series- Dark Dawn is my favorite of the two.

I haven't played too many JRPGs, but I'm slowly catching up on that list.

Golden Sun, Persona 3, Final Fantasy Six, and Twewy
I do love J-rpg's, but those are the only 'favorites' I can name off hand. Mostly because I rarely keep mental lists of my favorite games.

I quite enjoy RPGs ("j" or otherwise), and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Suikoden 2. As a few others have stated, it is a fantastic game. It is possessed of an ephemeral awesomeness, hard to define yet undeniable.

But to add some new games to the discussion:

Steambot Chronicles - Perhaps less of a jRPG and more of a jRPG-openworld-rhythm-mech sim, so it may be out of place on this list; none-the-less, while the "kitchen sink" approach does make for a few rough edges, it retains a sense of fun and wonder.

Anachronox - While decidedly not of Japanese make, Anachronox is driven by jRPG conventions and pretty much straight copied Square's famous Active Battle Time System popularized in FF6 and Chrono Trigger. But my caveats aside, it's a great game. Funny, neo-noir sci-fi at its best. Plus, one of your party members is a shrunken planet. A whole fricken planet. And I thought Final Fantasies had memorable characters.

In order:

Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Golden Sun
Dragon Quest VIII
Breath of Fire 2
Kingdom Hearts
FF IX
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Dragon Quest IV
FF IV
Grandia 2
Legend of the Dragoon (never played, only got to watch a cousin play it but it was awesome nevertheless)

Chrono Trigger way at the top. Final Fantasy IV was fantastic. I should mention VI but I should really play it again. ;)

I'm really surprised nobody else has mentioned the Mario RPG. That game was great! The last Square game to come out on the SNES...

just a little bit of trivia for you all, who probably don't care ;)

Persona 3/4. Have no real preference over the other. Prefer the music in 3, battle system in 4, though that is reconciled a bit in P3P.

Anyone calling themselves a JRPG fan owes it to themselves to try these game :D
I did try Persona 3 but was not so excited about it. It's really nice and all but I don't like to have limited time to beat a game^^;
But the Hulk-Hogan-monsters were hilarious!

OT:
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raido Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army (yes, that is the title!, I could never play the second part because it was never released in my country :( )
Shadow Hearts (The first one was great, the others got worse but they were okay and funny)
Atelier Iris-games (so nice and sweet)
Final Fantasy I-VIII, XII
Chrono Trigger
The "Tales of"-series (every game I have played was very good and entertaining)
Trinity Universe (so colorful and crazy!!!)
Baten Kaitos (I haven't played that yet but I expect to like it...have heard so many good things about it)
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Super Mario RPG!

Yes, I like (J)RPGS :)

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I've never played Persona, but want to since everyone seems to like it so much. I resolved to try it out once I felt fiscally secure enough to buy a new game... but then you said this

Also, aside from those, I'm about to get a couple more from Amazon: The World Ends With You (which I've seen a lot of you recommend) and Knights in the Nightmare (which was an Atlus game, so it can't be all bad.) Although, that second one is really more of a strategy game... then again, so's FF Tactics. (And Fire Emblem, which nobody has brought up yet - but Blazing Blade was awesome!)

I wonder if Hogan knows about this :D
