Homeworld 2 definitely. Some of the missions were pretty tough, but they got easier later in the game when you get all of the kilometer long super ships.

For a more traditional top down style RTS, then Warcraft 3.

Seven Kingdoms
Warlords Battlecry II

Starcraft a distant 3rd. I dunno, those two were just "different enough" to be good in my books, despite how "borken" they could be.

Heh, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. I never played it, but I did pick it up in a jewelcase for $0.75. At that price, it's a crime not to buy it.

i'm disappointed in all you TA fans and not one of you has mentioned TA spring,
1. its free
2. the gameplay is great
3. not a system hog, not gorgeous, but i don't care a fig cos i'm here for the stratagy
4. i tried Supreme Commander and went back to it, which says a lot.

so go google it already! Balanced Annihilation is the best mod to start off with, and avoid the speed metal map.

AoE and AoE II were good. I also played SW: Battlegrounds and liked it...however, after that RTS just fell out of line with me. I bought WC III and Starcraft recently. Starcraft= awesome, but (to me) WCIII= okay. However, my computer hasn't been upgraded for years and (sadly) I fell out of the computer and RTS loop.

I played a 'Goblin Commander' game for the PS2, though, which I have to admit I really liked.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Age of Mythology. That sucked me in for a while. Empire Earth was really great, as well, and so was an older C&C game I played.

So I guess what I'm saying is, most RTS I play I love but suck at for some odd reason.

I liked goblin commander too, it was fun.

Though to through my hat into the ring best RTS to this date for me has been CnC:Tiberium Sun

The newest one is alright but that one is just an old classic, I ironically very much miss my concrete and fence posts >.> its just not the same.

Seriously, no one likes Star Wars Empire at War or Forces of Corruption? No one?
Even though redstar alphaputs up a very valid and convincing arguement with Bruce Campbell, I will say that the SW:EaW were fun, but not "great" overall. With mods they are very good, I found, and among my favorite Star Wars games.

They'd still be better with a little Boomstick, however...

Company of Heroes for now, although I expect Dawn of War 2 will likely take the cake when its released knowing Relic.

Dawn of War + Winter Assault

With just the first expansion, the balance was about as good as you'll ever get in an RTS (the later expansions seriously screwed it up). The only game I can think of that has better raw gameplay is Company of Heroes and that one loses because it don't have DA BOYZ.

Age of Empires. I agree that III wasn't as good, but I still play it regularly. AOE was the first RTS I ever played, and holds a place in my heart many people reserve for Mario or Zelda.

Dawn of War comes in a close second. Rise of Nations in third.

Homeworld is fantastic. It is one of the games regularly played at the LAN parties I attend.

I do have to say World in Conflict is FANTASTIC. All though the whole american patriotism got a little thick at times, it was able to create memorable characters, show how awful war really is, and keep game play very balanced.

Company of heroes: Opposing fronts (British people! Finally! I wasn't aware anyone else did any actual fighting!!)

I do enjoy Star Wars: Empire at War (mainly because I bought it for roughly £4)though the land combat needs serious improvement.

Starcraft is STILL the amongst the finest RTS games I have played to date.

Tiberium Sun.

As a 40K player I really don't like dawn of war because it makes the Imperial guard out to be feeble.

Am not playing any more at the moment.
