The Black Templars, 'cause once you set them loose they won't stop at anything short of victory (or a centuries long crusade).

Also, Chaos, 'cause nothing is as awesome as an enemy that gets stronger the more you fight it.

Ciaphas Cain.

I've not gotten into the table top gaming and while I love Dawn of War... the reason I perk up at the mention of 40K is undoubtedly Cain and his 597th Valhallan.

I know I said Eldar earlier, and I stand by it, but I have to say that after the Eldar Commissar Yarrick is the best faction in Warhammer 40K...

If we are going into regiments Cadian 8th here.

They are the Imperial Guard like the Ultramarines are the Space Marines.

Nothing weird about them,Cadia is the main base of the guard, and are the perfect example on how to be an Imperial Guard Regiment.

EDIT:I know hes badass but Yarrick might not be able to take on whole factions by himself (unless the faction is orks.)

so 2 Orks on any backwater planet, and you have a Waaagh before too long. Taking them out appears to be akin to curing a common cold by stabbing each individual virus. Maybe they won't ever win, but there one race that you just can't eliminate.
No, two Orks is what's technically called a "fight". You need three for a Waaaaagh! And that's only when they've worked out who's da biggest.
Three also equals a decent lunch for two to fight over, if the third is a Grot.

I gotta say that the Orks are not in any sort of trouble in the long run, at least if what ive read is right. You can't get rid of theme. They can pretty much build up from junk, and can pop up from nowhere long after taking them out. And I read somewhere that they grow from spores that can lay in the ground for centuries. Plus, they genetically remember how to make there technology, so 2 Orks on any backwater planet, and you have a Waaagh before too long. Actually, the Tyranids suck a world completely dry, including the atmosphere. Given enough time, the nids would devour every planet the entire 40k universe, and I'm yet to hear of an ork unit that doesn't need to breathe. So if the Imperium really wants to wipe out orks permanently, they need to hang an "All you can eat" sign around the eagle's neck.

Which basically means that given enough time the tyrannids are dooming themselves to starvation. The universe only has a finite amount of biomass and so the nids would simply consume everything and then die of starvation.

Tau, i love the clean hi-tech feel which contrasts with the gothic-ness of wh40k. And the fact they don't totally hate the other races, and instead sometimes try to convert them to the greater good

no, the Tau Quietly hate them and kill them off over time covertly.

if they win a world which is heavily imperial populated they would act all nice as if they converted them to the greater good, but then pour something into the water so that over the next hundred years or so the human populace on that planet becomes sterial or sick and eventually dies out.

hmm im pretty sure theres a piece of fiction in the 1st tau codex that involves human allies/servants... and they let the kroot and the vespid live didn't they, whereas other races would've just killed them

That's just not true. The tau are willing to let any faction join them as long as they embrace the greater good. If they don't, then they are killed. That's not to say the tau are the "good guys" by any means, just that they don't have the same goals as the other factions. With a tau army you can take Kroot, Vespid, and even human auxiliaries, so tau aren't xenophobic like the Imperium.

i always thought Necron Nid confrentations would be intresting.

you have the great devourers consuming and assimilating all life and resources...
then you have the Necron a lifeless race bent on killing all life with no need for resources...

Another group that I am a fan of even though I do not like the Chaos Space Marines is the Night Lords. Demoralize the enemy, rip their hearts out before battle is even joined, make them guess, wonder which shadow contains their doom and when you finally strike they even know where their deaths came from.

I think the Crimson Fists have the most embarrassing history of any chapter. Their massive fortress-citadel thing was blown up by a single Imperial shot which happend to be a bit off. It managed (by an incredibly slim chance) to go through all their shields, plunging into the core of the armoury and blowing it all up.

Fortunately, the chapter master was out at the time.

Some aren't dead just in a forerunner bubble thing in space.

Its doesn't make since how Master Chief isn't the strongest yet he doesn't die after well anything(those books think MJOLNIR means paper mache).
I didn't mean they were all dead, I just meant that all too often they seem to forget that they should be working like a well oiled military machine, and instead end up acting like a team consisting of Will Turner clones.
