Simply question.

For me, it'd have to be The Sandman. I just love that dark strangeness to the whole thing. One of my favourite wtf moments in a comic is in the Sandman where a man rips open his chest and a flock of crows fly out of his rib cage. This kind of thing happened every issue, and I loved it.

Its also superbly written, there simply some great moments in the story, like Lucifer giving up and closing hell, or the brother Destruction living a peaceful life in a little cottage on a hill.

It's also of the best horror moments I've ever seen a comic. Comic book horror isn't like that of a film. You can't make people jump, so you have to be clever, present them with images that will disturb them and haunt them to their dieing day. The Sandman was great at this. I still can't quite get over the Nightmare character (I forget his name) who was a psychopath with teeth where his eye sockets would be. It capture people and eat their eyes. It still gives me shivers.

Anyway, what's you favourite comic book? I doubt enough people have read comic books to keep this thread afloat for long. Either that or this thread is going to be a sea of Watchmen.

I only have a few comics really, none of them are Marvel or DC or super hero stuff.

'Johnny The Homicidal Maniac' and 'I Feel Sick' are probably my two favourites. They are both made by the creator of Invader Zim: Jhonen Vasquez.

JTHM is based around a psychotic young man named Johnny C aka NNY (pronounced 'knee') as he vents his anger and frustration with humanity with gruesome murder and torture, as well as painting a wall with blood so a monster doesn't break through it... It's not a serious comic, just with very dark and twisted humour. It's in B+W.

'I Feel Sick' is set in the same world as JTHM but is based around a girl NNY tried to kill (because he loved her and wanted to "immortalise the moment" so the happiness he felt never ended) as she is slowly being driven insane by the same things that caused him to do what he does. This two-part comic is in colour though and was coloured by the voice of GIR in Invader Zim.

Also Robert Tritthardt's 'Writhe and Shine' books are great. These are more realistic and loosely based on the life of a Goth/Industrial DJ in New Orleans, they are a satire of the G/I cultures and the nightclub scenes associated with them.

Watchmen FTW. On the other hand, I do love Deadpool. He's just just a deep and well developed character... Well, no, not in the slightest really, I just find him more likable than most because he dones't even try and take of that comic crap seriously.

The Sandman series is indeed all kinds of awesome :D

JTHM is ok, but I like Squee a lot more - I just find it more funny for some reason.

There's this series of short comic anthologies that I really like called Flight. There are all sorts of different styles of artwork and storylines in them, all high quality. Highly recommended.

And the obligatory Watchmen shout-out - but I actually like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen a lot more. If you've only ever seen the shitty movie, don't let that stop you from reading the comics, they're awesome.

I loved the Batman comic The Killing Joke. The Joker is my favorite villain of all time and it showed him at his best...or...worst...I don't know.

I really should find that one. I just finished "The Dark Knight Returns" and thought It was genius. I need another Batman comic.

For the record, I read the Watchmen and has no clue why everyone LOVED it. It seemed to have a little too much of..."The Govarnment is evil! Anything with Power is evil!" kind of vibe to it.

Too leftist in other words.
Plus Dr. Manhattan was just ridiculous.

Watchmen is great, the psychiatric exam of Rorschach was both disturbing and shocking, yet somehow quite satisfying - like finishing a jigsaw puzzle. Also the very first Sandman, in the diner what was it 11 hours? ("24 hours" I checked) That was probably the most nihilist, genuinely disturbing this I've read in a comic.

Akira
Buffy Season Eight (I actually like it more than the TV show)
Infinite Crisis was pretty cool.
I don't really read Marvel/DC stuff except for like major events like Infinite Crisis but I liked the Ultimate Marvel universe especially stuff like Ultimate Spiderman and the Ultimates.
the Kill Audio stuff was pretty unique but I haven't kept up with it for a while now.

Mine is Bone by Jeff Smith. It's hilarious...and weird.
I'd have to agree with this. A comic book with the scale of The Lord of the Rings and a sense of humour? You can't go wrong with that.
