I still can't quite get over the Nightmare character (I forget his name) who was a psychopath with teeth where his eye sockets would be. It capture people and eat their eyes. It still gives me shivers.
I do believe he's called the Corrinthian (that doesn't look like it's spelt right but I can't be arsed to check right now)

Another Sandman lover here, agreed with everything you said about it. I also can't get enough of Transmet, I spot something new to laugh at every time I read it.

You're thinking of The Corinthian. That guy was awesome.

I'm going to have to second the nomination of Sandman for best comic book series, although I do have a fondness for Watchmen and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac as well. One series I love and I'm reasonably certain not many of you have heard of is Serenity Rose by Aaron Alexovitch. It's got this marvelous art style and compelling characters. He's put a lot of effort into developing a world that molds so well to the real one we live in. The first two issues are available online for freeeeee. Give it a Google, won't you?

Preacher is still my favourite series of all time. I think it's great, and actually understand why it's been in movie limbo for years and yet no-one's managed to make it, I had some hope that HBO might manage to create it, as they have less need to censor than most, but damn, if it ever got made WELL, the Christian right in America are going to be firebombing places, heh.

However, if you enjoyed that, I firmly urge you to get hold of 'The Boys', where a small group of people with certain skills, decide they're not gonna put up with superheroes any more.

The trouble is, in their world, superheroes are still human, just with amazing powers, so, they're still careless, stupid, selfish, unthinking etc, they just happen to have super strength or the ability to fly.

It's a great series so far, and I recommend it, but don't feel I'm doing a great job of selling it.

I'll also throw out a recommendation for Y - The Last Man, about a guy and his pet monkey, who are the last male mammals left alive after a worldwide wipeout.

For a more traditional comicbook, I really enjoyed Punisher Max too.

Oh and UK guys, if you're interested at all...

GO AND USE YOUR LIBRARY!

It's there to be used, it's free, and most have a good stock of graphic novels, and what they don't have they can usually order in for a lousy pound, it's how I got to read so many for no cash! I do however own the full Preacher, as it warranted repeat re-reading.

I haven't read very many. That said, I'm torn between The Dark Knight Returns (screw you haters, I like it) and Locke & Key.
Locke & Key was awesome, I'm really looking forward to the second installment.

I'm still reading it. Seems to have a blend of Lovecraft and Tales of the Crypt, but I might be wrong about the latter.

I think that's a pretty good assessment. I hope you like it.

And btw, I'm still waiting for the rest of your review of 20th Century Ghosts :p

Watchmen is my favorite, but I haven't read many. Arkham Asylum and The Killing Joke were very good, though disappointingly short. I've read the first volume of Bone and it was hilarious, I'm definitely going to continue that.

My favorite comic series(its mini buts till) is in Thy Name Silver surfer is amazing, alot of wemotion, good way and obeservation can be found in it. But Graphic Novel, either Marvel's Civil War, because of the scope of heroes shown, or Aetheric Mechanics (Just for it's ideas in science, and story, even if the ideas were alot borrowed)

No love for John Constantine? That figures... Heh.

Oh, and did any of you know that V For Vendetta is now a required reading in some literary college courses? It's true.

Nextwave by Warren Ellis, the man who wrote Transmetropolitan, is utterly stonking- very funny if you don't get the references, and hilarious if you do. Planetary (another Ellis series) was awesome as well. I say was, although we're still waiting for the last issue. It was due for release in late 2007, I believe, but everyone involved has long since forgotten about it I suspect.

Mark Waid's Fantastic Four, Grant Morrisson's New X-men (much of which ended up in the new 'Wolverine and the X-men' cartoon) and Walt Simonson's run on The Mighty Thor are all brilliant and well worth reading too. The original Lee/Kirby Iron Man, Thor and Fantastic Four series are pretty spectacular too (though brace yourselves for the casual sexism and Commie-hating in between the cosmic adventuring), and can be picked up cheaply in Marvel's phone-book-sized black & white Essential series.

I only have a few comics really, none of them are Marvel or DC or super hero stuff.

'Johnny The Homicidal Maniac' and 'I Feel Sick' are probably my two favourites. They are both made by the creator of Invader Zim: Jhonen Vasquez.

JTHM is based around a psychotic young man named Johnny C aka NNY (pronounced 'knee') as he vents his anger and frustration with humanity with gruesome murder and torture, as well as painting a wall with blood so a monster doesn't break through it... It's not a serious comic, just with very dark and twisted humour. It's in B+W.

'I Feel Sick' is set in the same world as JTHM but is based around a girl NNY tried to kill (because he loved her and wanted to "immortalise the moment" so the happiness he felt never ended) as she is slowly being driven insane by the same things that caused him to do what he does. This two-part comic is in colour though and was coloured by the voice of GIR in Invader Zim.
I blame Johnen Vasquez for my comic cravings today. I never even had a slight interest in comics and/or "graphic novels" till I looked at JtHM. So many of the pages had me falling out of my chair. Especially the "Meanwhile" in the second issue where that poor bastard (on a date with Devi) has the shits.

JtHM opened up a world to me that I thought was nothing but boring superheros beating up villains. Naturally I went and read everything from "I Feel Sick" to Filler Bunny, but being as short as they all are, I needed my fix. This is when Agent X came into the picture. Great comic with a great story and an awesome protagonist who also made me laugh...
The story of Agent X got all twisted up into my favorite comic series of all time:

Deadpool
This comic took everything I loved in a comic book character and gave him an awesome looking ninja mask and swords. He's set in the world of X-Men and kicks Wolverine's ass on a regular basis... HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HIM?!?

Humm...

Hellboy and B.P.R.D. are both excellent series. Battling Nazis, occult horrors and bizarre science, sometimes all at the same time heh.

On a similar if slightly more twisted to the left is The Goon, some really weird and hilarious stuff there.

And waaaaaay out in the outward reaches of the mind... Madman.
