I loved the Batman comic The Killing Joke. The Joker is my favorite villain of all time and it showed him at his best...or...worst...I don't know.
I really should find that one. I just finished "The Dark Knight Returns" and thought It was genius. I need another Batman comic.
Dark Knight Returns was great as well. I bought Knight Fall today and just finished it about 20 minutes ago and I thought it was great.

I'd recommend The Long Halloween too.

Simply question.

For me, it'd have to be The Sandman. I just love that dark strangeness to the whole thing. One of my favourite wtf moments in a comic is in the Sandman where a man rips open his chest and a flock of crows fly out of his rib cage. This kind of thing happened every issue, and I loved it.

Its also superbly written, there simply some great moments in the story, like Lucifer giving up and closing hell, or the brother Destruction living a peaceful life in a little cottage on a hill.

It's also of the best horror moments I've ever seen a comic. Comic book horror isn't like that of a film. You can't make people jump, so you have to be clever, present them with images that will disturb them and haunt them to their dieing day. The Sandman was great at this. I still can't quite get over the Nightmare character (I forget his name) who was a psychopath with teeth where his eye sockets would be. It capture people and eat their eyes. It still gives me shivers.

Anyway, what's you favourite comic book? I doubt enough people have read comic books to keep this thread afloat for long. Either that or this thread is going to be a sea of Watchmen.
Sandman is awesome, if you like it I recommend you check out Neil Gaimans novels. You would love "American Gods."

Anything by vertigo is the shizz really. Books of magic was a cool one I got into before sandman. I mostly go for Short story collections now. "Fables" is an alright series. Although comparing it to books of magic was a bad call. Because it sucks in comparison.

Most of these are mentioned, but anyways:

Killing Joke - One of the best one-shots out there (for Punisher fans "The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe" is must read)
Sandman - I really don't have words to express my love for this... but you know it already
Deadpool - Best Marvel character. 'Nough said.
Enki Bilal's The Nikopol Trilogy - Exellent one if you liked movie Immortel.
Transmetropolitan - Excellent comic, especially f you are (post)cyberpunk freak like me :)

You guys are mentioning alot of stuff I like, but none of you so far have mentioned

V For Vendetta
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
Hellblazer

No love for John Constantine? That figures... Heh.

Oh, and did any of you know that V For Vendetta is now a required reading in some literary college courses? It's true.
V for Vendetta is one of the comics I keep meaning to read. Swamp Thing and Hellblazer are both excellent comics though...well...Swamp Thing was in the early days. It was cool watching him become a god, but once he did, I lost interest.

I used to read the Judge Dredd graphic novels in my school library before they turned it into a morgue, but I've got to say my favourite comics are the Sin City ones.

I haven't read that many, but both Watchmen and V for Vendetta is awesome. Alan Moore really knows how to tell a story. I'm reading Sandman now. I haven't gotten that far, but what I've seen this far is amazingly good.

Nextwave by Warren Ellis, the man who wrote Transmetropolitan, is utterly stonking- very funny if you don't get the references, and hilarious if you do. Planetary (another Ellis series) was awesome as well. I say was, although we're still waiting for the last issue. It was due for release in late 2007, I believe, but everyone involved has long since forgotten about it I suspect.
You will be happy to know that it sounds like wildstorm have managed to rope Ellis into writing the final issue, that will be longer than the usual ones to help tie up the plot.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned The Invisibles yet. Not the best in the world, but worth a crack at. The origional Rogue Trooper series is worth a look up as well, dealing quite well with the moral ambiguities of war wrapped up in a revenge tale. There was a reason that 2000AD used to be so well read, as it put out some belter stories when I read it (up to the early 90s when they decided to reboot the judge dread storyline).

Just to put forth another unmentioned classic, (as most of the staple must reads have been covered in the thread already) pick up Kingdom Come, if just for the artwork alone. Also worth a mention is the recent reboot of Booster Gold, just a fun ride through the absurdities of the DC universe via one of its most comically inept people.

Too many to mention, and everyone's covered my favorites.

Except Mouse Guard. I like unusual stories with good art that slowly build up and don't require 900 pages to reach a conclusion.

One Piece, Heroes and Teen Titans.

I need to read more graphic novels - since I'm trying to make one myself -. V for Vendetta, Sin City and The Punisher are on my list.

You're thinking of The Dark Night Strikes Again. Tons of people liked DKR.

As for me, definitely Sin City. Pretty much anything written by Frank Miller (except for RoboCop, which was just out right insane) actually. I thought I'd never become a fanboy of anything, but then he had to come along. Pity.

Personally, I thought Planet Hulk was much, much better than World War. Granted, I did'nt read every issue, but the story seemed less expansive as the other one.

Not on this website. On this website, it seems Frank Miller's Batman is considered a travesty to the character.

Well, the dude beat Superman shitless. That certainly gives it a whole new layer of awesome in my book.
