I nearly forgot about Whale - they're not technically brilliant, but there's just something so damn fun about them.
Senser had a male and female lead, don't know if that counts.
The 90s seemed to have a wealth of female lead bands, especially in the indie/britpop area, Garbage,Kenickie,Echobelly, Elastica, Catatonia, seemed to be an easy sell, nowadays, not so much.

It's a damn shame that women find it so hard to make it anywhere, whereas, outside of pop, you can look pretty average as a guy if you have the talent, although that's even worse than it used to be, would Meatloaf, Lemmy of Motorhead etc make it nowadays? Never mind looking back at women if we go back to JAzz greats like Etta Fitzgerald, I'm not trying to be unchivalrous, but I don't think she'd have made the cover of GQ or FHM magazine.
I imagine we, as a culture are missing out on tons of real talent partly because the guys in charge decide we won't buy the concept of music about love unless it's performed by the beautiful, and partly, because we won't.
