True, but I find that many of my male friends don't particularly like many female artists, unless they dress in skanky clothes and sing about sex all the time, that is. Methinks they do have favourites, but they're just afraid to admit it at the risk of looking 'gay'. On here, considering everyone is more-or-less anonymous, it would be a good place to see what people really think.
Not sure about your 'not wanting to look gay theory'. I just had a quick run through my itunes library and I reckon it must be about 95% male vocalists. There's no underlying freudian meaning in that, I guess I just prefer the sound of male vocalists, and there tends to be more male rock singers. I guess if you were into pop music you'd have lots of female musicians to choose from. Anyway a few favourites of mine:

The majority of my favorite artists are Female, not that they are explicitly better content wise, it's just that I find the Female voice much more attractive. So basically I'm attracted to certain songs, and that's just nature I suppose.

Honestly though, to state my favorite would be incredibly difficult because I listen to so much music that there is always something new and exciting.

I'd have to say I heard this for the first time yesterday and it kind of blew me away. Lyrical content matters a great deal, but the key these days is whether or not a lot of said pop stars can sing live.

Incredibly surprised nobody said Adele because that girl can sing like no other, albeit probably too mainstream for you hipsters (although I bet I'm the biggest hipster in here).

My two favorites are Björk (and it's pronounced "Byurke", rhymes with "shirk") and Tori Amos. Gods, I love Tori Amos.

Ooh... that's a toughie.

If pushed, I think I'd have to choose either Alex Kandel, of Sleeper Agent:
I think the thing I love most about the band (and of course, the singer) is the energy of it. They really throw themselves into the music. Which sounds obscenely pretentious, but hey I'm a hipster. I think.

Or the girls of Katzenjammer:
This is easily my favourite all-girl band regardless. Folk Punk is awesome.

Edit: Urgh, I can't get the embed to work. Somebody please treat me like a moron and diagnose.

Ninette from Powder, not the mid 90's Britpop band, but the modern Powder from California. Fantastic vocalist and lyricist, and she has a great unique singing voice.

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to embed, but here's a link to Powder performing their song "Go"

Surprised not to see more Lindsey Stirling. I always assumed she was the matron goddess of nerds.

So yeah, that's mine.

Favorites being the above, her Lord of the Rings Medley, and her original Epic Violin Girl video.
Well I'm kind of a big nerd, but I have never seen nor heard anything about this woman, and it was very lovely. However, I'm quite upset with you seeing as I'll never be able to play as Link in another Zelda tale without recalling how much I want to bang said Link above.

I have a few weaknesses regarding women but a talented violinist is probably top 3.

Well, to be honest I think Bonnie Tyler got a pretty amazing voice. However her music isn't really my kind of music so I wont say she's my favourite.

Emma Anzai, the bass player from Sick Puppies is pretty awesome. A problem I often have with those who play bass is that they seem kinda bored, but she really gets into it.

It would be better if I could have found a decent live recording of them performing to get my point across, but still, I think she's pretty cool although not my favourite bass player.

Does it have to be a singer, because if so, I would say sheryl crow.

If not, Meg White. She was in my most favorite band ever, the white stripes.

She's got a great voice and The Distillers used to be one of my favourite american punk bands. Her attitude is sick and disturbing and she is gorram gorgeous.

OK I've never actually heard of her before. I just listened to some of her stuff including this and I have to say she is awesome.

Mine is easily Amanda Palmer, even without the opposite sex stipulation. She is just hands down one of my favourite musicians, even though she is a bit mental.

Agreed. She's a great artist. DAMN she can work that violin. Her Skyrim song together with Peter Hollens is AWESOME. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSLPH9d-jsI

Other than that-

Utada Hikaru.
Okay, she's awesome too. But other than THAT, Emilie Autumn. Great singer, and she can play the everliving shit out of that electric violin. And she's got powerful satire, and... That voice... She's talented, but sad.
