This is difficult, I usually like bands, not solo musicians.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor are probably my favourite band with a woman in them (Sophie Trudeau), but there's 8 of them and it's impossible to pick my favourite songs by them cos they're a band revolving around whole albums.

Eyes Set To Kill have twin sisters, including the lead singer. All You Ever Knew is their best song IMO but after that it's a crapshoot.
Their earlier albums are really average though.

Florence and The Machine. Drumming Song is her/their(?) best song.

Paramore. Not sure about their best song, Crushcrushcrush and Brick By Boring Brick are good. Ironically, Decode's probably my favourite actually.

In This Moment, Japanese Voyeurs, Lana Del Rey, Lacuna Coil and Scissor Sisters are all decent, and Katy Perry is pretty much the only pop musician I'd say I kinda like.

Apart from GY!BE though, I don't particularly love any of them.

I admit it. I have been searching through my discography for hours, and I haven't been able to find a single female trailer music composer at all. I don't know if they're just that rare (my collection is pretty big) or that they simply don't exist.

What I do know is that Enya has an amazing voice. But she isn't really my favorite.

Interesting thread. Though not chosen based off gender, all my 'favorite' musicians/composers/bands are male... That said, I can think of a few female fronted or written acts I really like:

Probably far and away, the great and terrible lady Diamanda Galas: Classically trained, experimentally minded, 3 1/2 octave vocal range, sorta a dark queen of awesome music.

Cosey Fanny Tutti / Chris and Cosey / Throbbing Gristle

Nikki / Prometheus Burning:

Ms. Arafna / Haus Arafna

Yoko Kanno / Ogira

Bjork? The lady from SINA? I dunno... Not as many female producers and musicians active in the music I listen to as other genres maybe.

EDIT: Oh, damn, forgot Brody Dalle / Distillers / Spinerette

Hard to choose one, but I'll go with Otep Shamaya as my favorite.

Metal needs more women like her. It's not just looking pretty and screaming *cough*Maria Brink of In This Moment*cough*. Otep always has great lyrics. Sometimes they're political, sometimes personal, and sometimes just fun and she delivers them with a great metal voice. She's also a published poet which is cool.

My music tastes constantly evolve. If you asked me 4 years ago I would of said Utada Hikaru,
but now I have to go with this woman.

Florence + the Machine is awesome here is my favorite song by them:

Someone else already mentioned Simone Simons, and I have to agree, she has a great set of... pipes. You thought I was going to say something else there, didn't you. Other female musicians I really like are Joan Jett and Lzzy Hale. My favourite song Halestorm have done has got to be Mz. Hyde.

unless they dress in skanky clothes and sing about sex all the time, that is. Methinks they do have favourites, but they're just afraid to admit it at the risk of looking 'gay'.
Thats why I don't even know many female artists tbh.
Also, surely liking only male artists would affirm the 'gay' factor?

Since I don't really like any female artsists, for no other reason than 95% of my music taste is metal and womens metal vocals are always something I dislike, I shall go forth with Trent Reznor.

Because gods don't have gender.

Wooooooow. Holy shit. Nice.

OT: Can't think of anyone tbh. Not a lot of women in metal. (Don't like the melodic stuff.)
What am I reading? There are heaps of chicks in metal nowadays. Check it:

Otep

The Agonist

Arch Enemy

Black Veil

Thats just a start...

It has to be Florence from F+TM. Great voice, interesting videos and most importantly amazing lyrics.

Other than that, maybe Lana del Rey. Can't sing live, but she has that something.

Yeah, that's always confused me. Pehaps it's just the fact that they would be going against the tide of popular (dickhead) music, and they're all sheep who follow the crowd. Just so happens that most musicians (if you can call them that) of the dickhead genre are male.

Either Bridget Fogle or Florence Welch. Both are incredibly talented and have absolutely stunning voices.

Utada Hikaru and for her songs-
1 Passion
2 Simple and Clean
3 Making Love

Before you asked, no I'm not a Kingdom Heart fan, heck I never even played those games yet but I really like the songs she made for that game.

Amy Lee from Evanescence is definitely my favorite female musician. Her voice is very relaxing. It'd be tough to narrow down three songs though, anything off of Fallen works for me.

Lee Aaron. We Canadians crowned her the "Metal Queen" because she was one of the first female vocalists doing vocals for heavy metal in the mid 80's. A tiny little woman with a voice twice her size. And even though she's over 40 years old now, she looks better now than she ever did. Voice is a wee bit shorter, but she's still sounds great.

Covers Montrose in the first one. If I'd ever heard Sammy Hagar sing this first, she'd have me changing my pants every time I'd hear her sing it.

A live clip from a concert two years ago.
