For me I have to go with Tecom Secret Of the Stars

It was a very long very unique game with a good story line that included many twists. Its just sorta sad that not very many people have played it or gave up on it becasue of difficulty.

Wow I can't name just one, so I'll give you 3:
- FF2 (4 in Japan)
- Shadowrun
- Chrono Trigger

Zelda - Link to the Past (or is that an adventure game?) either way it still ranks in my top 10 games let alone just SNES games. :D

For me, Chrono Trigger wins by default, as it's the only SNES RPG I've ever finished.

But then I played the game a second time for another ending, and a third, and started a fourth, so I dunno, maybe it was actually pretty good, too.

Chrono Trigger for me too, I've seen all endings, haven't done that with any other game except Fallout.

Secret of Mana deserves a mention too, although mainly because of the 2-player coop.

Chrono Trigger is probably the most accessible and widely liked RPG for the SNES.

Final Fantasy 6 is the best FF game in my opinion. It featured pretty much every character type and ability (including summons) that Square would use for the next five games in the series.

Also Earthbound is good, and doesn't have a medieval fantasy setting.

Hmm. I loved both Final Fantasies, but I liked FF2 american better, the fewer number of character allowed for deeper characterization and somewhat simpler gameplay, I felt. Cetraintly if I ahd to pick one, that would be it. I played that game an absolutely unresonable numberof times, got all the items, everything, etc etc. That said, FF3 american is also very good. Chrono Trigger was also one of my favorites.

If we're going to go with slightly more "adventure" style gameplay, I'd add Secret of Mana into the mix.

Okay, this is my interpretation of your question.
You go into a diamond store, all the diamonds in there are incredibly good looking and well worth the price, and each and every one of them is absolutely beautiful in its own way. Now pick your favorite.
Pick a favorite out of...
Secret of Mana
Lufia 2
Earthbound
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 5
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger
Zelda: LttP (if you call it a RPG, I call it an adventure game)

How the hell are you supposed to pick from all these???? Lufia had the greatest puzzles I've ever seen in a video game. Chrono Trigger was, well, fucking Chrono Trigger. FF4 laid down the framework for all JRPGs to come. FF5 gave us the job system, which allows for nearly endless character customization options. It does have the drawback that to even have a chance of getting through the game you have to spend a ridiculous amount of time leveling up and training. FF6 had an amazing story, wonderful characters, a wonderful esper system, and the world of ruin was so incredibly open ended and so much fun to explore. Zelda: LttP was one of the best games in the best ever series of games. Secret of Mana was, well, fucking Secret of Mana. Earthbound was so damn quirky and funny and entertaining.

That all being said, I suppose I'd have to go with FF6 as the best of the best. It's was long, open ended, never felt like it was dragging, had the best story of all the games I mentioned, a villain that still gives me nightmares, had it's funny moments (Ultros!), and had a very decent amount of hidden goodies. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I never quite understood the zealous-like admiration that so many people have for Chrono Trigger. The game was great, but I don't really consider it on the same level as FF6 or 7, mostly because the future world blew so much. If you haven't played Lufia 2, PLAY IT NOW! FF4 had a story that never really caught on with me, and 5, punishes you mercilessly for trying to just play the game without obnoxious amounts of training.

Point being, all these games are great, FF6 being the greatest. No system since the SNES has had this many good RPGs worth playing long after the newer systems have come out. Let us rejoice in the glory that was mid-90's console RPGs.

Illusion of Gaia anyone? That was a great game.

Secret of Evermore wasn't too shabby either.

Super Mario RPG was so good it hurts. I'm all over that for Virtual Console if we're lucky enough to get it.

Secret of Mana
The FFs
Chrono Trigger

I also Liked FF: Mystic Quest, but I was pretty young for that one.

On the other hand, I thought Breath of Fire was terrible.

As has already been stated and restated, this console had too many great games to make any decision 100% solid. I shall flimsily state that Final Fantasy VI was a game that had such rich gameplay and such a fantastic, dark, wonderful story that it changed my view on and my standards for video games forever from the day I started playing it.

Earthbound all the way. In the immortal words of Yahtzee: "A cross between the Cthulu Mythos and the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show" How can you possibly go wrong with that? Although I wish they would just release the compilation over here in America already. What exactly are they waiting for, Mother 4?

I don't know if you can call it an RPG, but my favorite on the SNES (and one of my top 5 games of all time) is Ogre Battle. It's deeper than most strategy games made today, has like thirteen different endings depending on how you play it, incorporates a reputation system that affects the game's events and outcome based on how you play, takes place in an extremely detailed and well-developed setting, has a memorable cast of characters.... It was a groundbreaking game on so many levels it's not even funny. It's one of the longest games I've ever played, and I've beaten it 4 times now.

It has to be Shadowrun, but maybe that's because it was one of the first RPG's I played :)
Secret of Mana was also a great game, yep...

Does Harvest Moon count? :)
This is a hard one to pick though...
So I won't.
It would be one (all?) of the following:
A Link to the Past (yeah, yeah, "adventure"- i get it)
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound/Mother
Illusion of Gaia (Time-Aus)
Breath of Fire 1&2 (yes. so sue me.)
Shadowrun
Terranigma

Special mention has to go to Secret of Mana, though- apart from one of the best game soundtracks of it's era, the drop in/out co-op was a great feature, and previously unheard of in an adv/rpg (unheard of by me, anyway.)
The first time i played it, my friend and i hired the game for a week and played it in shifts, jumping in and getting the update on the story as one of us woke up, playing co-op for a few hours until the other went to sleep, rinse and repeat... non stop for a whole week! (I was always the little spellcasting sprite if you're interested) But having to go back and play it through solo to fill in the gaps was made no less enjoyable by having the overall picture already spelled out for me, i guess because the characters and story were that strong....
Alright I just convinced myself. Scratch that list- SoM wins for me hands down.

Also, did anyone else try to max level all the spells to see the lvl9.99 animations? well worth it. Square really love to insert little hidden things for the persistent(anally retentive?) gamer to find, and that's why I love them.

Earthbound for sure. While most of the other RPGs mentioned above are fantastic, the vast majority of them skew towards swords and sorcery. Earthbound really did something different and that puts it just a touch above all the other SNES classics in my mind. Super Mario RPG does this as well, but the sheer oddity and quirk of Earthbound resonate strongest for me.
