I'm going to say Wizardry 8, only because out of everyone I've ever met and discussed RPGs with (which is a fair number, I socialise in circles that argue about how magic should function), I am the only person besides one who has heard of it, and therefore, played it. I know the Wizardry series got quite a following but if that died with 8 I don't know, since no one seems have heard of it.

For those who haven't, it's fantastic and you should go download / purchase a copy now. SirTech are liquidised (have been for a few years) so pirating it wouldn't hurt anyone even though copyright is still technically enforced, it's almost impossible to buy retail now.

The graphics are very simple 3D through the eyes of your collective party, much akin to Morrowind with simpler textures (though there are some nice reflections in places). Character creation is inventive, complex (though not difficult) and liberating. Theres a host of races and classes to choose from, lots of freedom to choose characteristics most of which you tend to become quite attachted to once the epic quest is over, and a myriad of skills and spells. The world is open though much is travelling through wide corridors of countryside path, there are hundreds of unique NPCs to interact with many of which provide an array of sidequests that are never repetative or linear fetch and or kill x enemy ordeals. It's just a really solid, really entertaining RPG that should have sold a lot better than it did so we could have Wizardry 9. It is also one of few games that pulls of making choices well, it's not black and white, evil and good, paladin and necromancer, picking sides or uniting warring factions, making decisions that deeply impact personal relationships. It's all very well thought out. The main quest is quite high fantasy and doesn't get dull for a moment, there is some great voice acting, annnnd that's all I have to say.

Get Wizardry 8, you won't regret it. Especially since you can get it free >.>

Aaaaa! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity.

Okay, the scream at the beginning has more than twenty As, but no way am I typing all of that. It's about BASE jumping in a futuristic Boston where all the buildings float. As well as the fun as hell game mechanics, there's also an awesome soundtrack and some pretty funny side videos. (How to bake cookies, how to debristle a pig...you know, good to know stuff.)

And, here it is: http://dejobaan.com/aaaaa/

Tomba! 2 was pretty awesome. I think it was the first RPG I actually played and understood. Before that, I played FF7. No clue what happened at the time, but I liked the sounds and the flashy colors!

Unheard game? hmm... That's hard. Loony Toons: Sheep Raider? Staring Ralph Wolf.

My god. This game was so difficult. I was never able to get past one of the later levels. You would have to maneuver around the sheep dog, get the sheep, and escape. When it was too difficult to manually grab the sheep, you had to go to a mailbox and assemble parts / get objects to use. My favorite level had a combination of a fan, sheep-attracting shampoo, and a decoy bush you could hide in. You used them all to get the sheep to come your way without the dog becoming suspicious. I loved it. It stretched my mind a ton. You were given the items but no instructions... So you would get a thing of shampoo and a fan, and you had to realize the shampoo made bubbles, and you used the fan to blow the bubbles toward the sheep.

Sounds really stupid, but it had amazing graphics back then, and its 'sandbox'-esque puzzle solving was new. LOVED IT.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is one of my top 3 favourite games of all time.
This ^^ Baten Kaitos had an amazing story, interesting albeit at times frustrating combat system, and possibly the best art-style I have seen ever. I feel kinda bad saying I only made it half-way with all this praise tho. Also whoever mentioned Rogue Galaxy gets a cookie. That game was pretty freaking sweet as well.

Guitaroo Man for the PS2, that game was awesome.

And going WAAAAAY back, Spellcaster for the Sega Master System was a game that was way ahead of its time, and is still as fun to play today as it was in the 80s.

Cyborg Justice. Best game for the Genesis, IMO. And nobody seems to have played it. :(

Chainsaw arms, laser bodies, and on-site robot mutilation and using the parts to upgrade yourself! ^_^

I liked Strider, Sonic 2, and **can't remember the name** ...it was like a DOS game, I think it was called "Lost Planet"

Majesty 2, Killing Floor and Sacred 2 are pretty good, semi-unheard games as well.
I think most people here know about Killing Floor dude

and Majesty (the FIRST ONE) I'll admit isn't well known (it was my first computer demo back when windows 98 was brand new)

...oh, and add "Disciples" to my list
It was like Heroes of Might and Magic meets Final Fantasy

The Suffering. One of the scariest survival action horror games ever made. I've yet to play a game as scary as The Suffering. It's set in a prison which is scary enough on it's own with out the various hell spawn running around killing everyone.

Amnesia

and The Suffering was vastly overlooked, and was a great game!
(just like Stubbs the Zombie: Rebel without a Pulse *cough* *cough*)

NecroVisioN... I swear if that game had the budget these AAA titles do it would have been the best game ever.

I am not surprised at all. Like I said, it's the InterWEBZ. Some of the games people are rattling off (Psi-Ops, Adventure of P Winderbottom, ect.) I have heard of too.
