Hocus Pocus by Apogee. Thats the first game I ever played and nobody I talk to has ever heard of it.
Edit: I'd like to also add Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, cause that game was just as fun as Hocus Pocus. Also, BioMenace, which I can't remember who made it but it was awesome.

I found this game called Orebuster randomly one day. It's a nice little NES-era PC JRPG. You can download it and its sequel for free, but it has only Japanese text. The first game was recently translated (horribly) and ported to the iPhone. I was disappointed to hear about this, because I'm pretty sure I was, quite literally, the ONLY person in North America to have played the games. I was definitely the first person to put a video of it on YouTube. Now it's out for the English-speaking world to play, so I feel sad and regular for knowing about it...

Thousand Arms was pretty awesome back in the day, what with the dating simulator and classic humor. It aged pretty horribly though.
Ugh. Awesome? When!?

I still consider that as being the WORST RPG of all time. Bloody combat system was awful. Yes, I would like to ACTUALLY use my other party members instead of having them stand around and do nothing. Fuck, what an awful game. Good concept - poor gameplay.
>It aged pretty horribly

Honestly, Thousand Arms could be much worse. The tongue-in-cheek style of it was a breath of fresh air after FF7 changed the entire JRPG genre and everyone decided "WE NEED OVERLY COMPLICATED DEPRESSING PLOT NAO", and the dating sim was done pretty well.

If you want the worst RPG, just play Final Fantasy II.

Has to be Heart of Darkness for me. Difficult, dark, fun and generally brilliant. Also there are SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO DIE! Its still good though.

Okage: Shadow King was a neat RPG. Though the only character you'll probably end up caring about is Stan.

The Suffering. One of the scariest survival action horror games ever made. I've yet to play a game as scary as The Suffering. It's set in a prison which is scary enough on it's own with out the various hell spawn running around killing everyone.

I'm pretty sure that game is free now.

I really enjoy Jackal. Very, very fun game.

Not from the 90's (With smiles on face)
It was a cool game, and going in that same direction I'll add The Adventures of Bayou Billy. A lot of people have heard of it because AVGN says it's crap, but most people that ever try it like it.

I don't think any of those are obscure. Except maybe Haunting Ground.
Just cuz you know of 'em doesn't mean others have.

Most people look at me strangely whenever I mention most of those games.

My brother and I both beat Quest 64 on the N64 about three times each. I have no idea why that repetitive peice of crap is so addicting, but three playthroughs speak for themselves.

Spectre, flash game for the pc, really beautiful and simple world plus a great story:

I doubt many people have played Graveyard [http://www.tale-of-tales.com/TheGraveyard/] give it a try, its really poignant and beautiful and is one of best reflections on death I have ever experienced.

This ones slightly better known its called AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity [http://dejobaan.com/aaaaa/] and it gets adrenaline pumping like no other game iv ever played, you free fall past buildings and you find yourself falling off your chair as you struggle not to die.

Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance, it's like the Total War games, but set in a fantasy world and with a dungeon crawl mode.

Arcana Heart, a 2d fighter for the PS2. It seemed like I was the only one who had that game. It was a good fighter.
I've been trying to find a PAL copy, but I've had no luck at all...

I actually kind of agree, I HATED losing a party member immediately. Pissed me off.

Mine would have to be a recent indie title on the XBLA. Its called Cthulu Save the World and it is a hilarious game that I highly recommend for only about $4 or $5.

It is an indie game so it looks like 8 bit and it has turn-based combat, but the strategic value of the combat is pretty good and I don't care about graphics :p
