Evolution Worlds.

Good luck finding a copy though, I'm lucky to still have mine.

Fun game, gives me one of my favorite female video game characters and two of my favorite video game characters period.
I have Evolution: the world of sacred device on Dreamcast which is like one part of Evolution worlds.

Pretty good, but I haven't had the chance to really play it that much though (as i recently just got it when i was hunting for dreamcast games).

Im guessing that one of those characters you are referring to is Linear.

Because I really like her as well. :3

(on another note, i would love to have a copy of Evolution worlds if only for the second part and the VA's).
Evolution Worlds actually compresses only the essentials of the first game and has the uncut second game in contact.

You must play it more.

And yes, I refer to Linear. :p

Also being one of my two favorite characters period. The other being Yurka.

The game is actually fairly rare but obtainable. If I remember correctly Amazon has some sellers listing it for fair prices in good condition.

[sub]LINEAR!!![/sub]

Colony Wars for the PS1. I don't know if anyone else has heard about it, but I recently pulled out my old playstation and it's probably the best space ship fighter ever made. Sure, it's also the most unforgiving game I've ever played; there are no retries and the crafts you have to protect are held together with duct tape, but I love it because of that and because of the nonlinearity of its storyline. Failing a mission doesn't end the game, just changes the storyline. Definitely an under appreciated gem. Oh, and it's narrated by James Earl Fucking Jones.

Lords of Chaos [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lords_of_Chaos_%28video_game%29] was a favourite of mine many years ago.

For something more contemporary I'd go with Sacrifice [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacrifice_%28video_game%29] or Warhammer: Dark Omen [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Omen], which are probably pretty unknown these days to any apart from strategy fans.
Dark Omen was a particular favourite, wasted many hours playing that to get all the items and upgrades.
OMFG! I remember having so many great memories of Warhammer dark omen as a kid, thank you so very much for reminding me of this great game.
Did you ever try Shadow of the Horned Rat? Came out a few years before Dark Omen and was very similar, but dear god it was fucking hard. Dark Omen was pretty tough as well, in fact I always used the infinite money cheat when playing it otherwise my unit sizes got smaller and smaller until battles became unwinnable.

And the first playthrough of the game was impossible. If you lose the GrudgeBearers or the Red Wizard early on (and there's a good chance you will, thinking nothing of it at the time) then you're pretty much screwed. The wizard was awesome though. Nothing like teleporting around the battlefield casting Conflagoration of Doom on people.

So many great moments: that giant battle against the orcs where you relieve a siege, or being freaked out by the weird shit in Mousillon. If only the game still worked on modern OS and hardware. I tried it on XP once and got nothing but a black screen and crashing.

Unfortunely no, the only other Warhammer game I played aside from Dark omen was Dawn of war, but it does sound good, i might check it out.

I'll warn you again that it's very hard, very obtuse, and probably near impossible to get running on a modern OS.
If you like turn-based strategy at all, check out Warhammer: Final Liberation. It was based on the Epic game (think 40K on a large scale) and was wonderfully broken, to the point where using flying units crashed the game.

Tomba! [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomba!] 1 and 2. I don't know how obscure these games were elsewhere, but I know that they were basically unheard of around here when they came out (and still are today).
haha i was definitely going to mention Tomba. I absolutely loved the first one, but never got a chance to play the second. And since we're talking about playstation 1 games, i was the only kid in my neighborhood who owned monster rancher 2.
I can't for the life of me finish Tomba 2. Not because it is bad, its because I have NO IDEA what to do next and I'm near the end of the game.

I'll have to revisit this thread after I finish Sharin No Kuni, after which I'll know if it counts as one of my favourite games.
God i remember this, i hated the "upper-half of a human body" things that would fall from the ceiling hung by there necks! Scared the shit out of me every time!

My own Choice - Lost Kingdoms 1&2 for the NGC! Real Time monster summoning card battling awesomeness :D
We're thinking of different games with the same name. Definitely nothing dropping from the ceiling, in fact it's mostly text based.
My bad, I intended to quote the guy who mentioned the suffering! Poor aim on my part.

I'd say Beyond Good & Evil for the PS2.

I don't really know how "unheard" of this game really is, but it's definitely tremendously underrated from a commercial standpoint! It is made by Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, and features an extremely original and immersive setting and story, well balanced and varied gameplay, and really nice and colorful graphics for its time.

It's supposed to be re-realeased in HD on PSN and XBLA this year, and a sequel might be in the making.
I'd highly recommend dowloading the re-mastered edition when it's realeased!

Does Second Sight count? It is pretty unheard of, I think. It is by the same team that made Time Splitters, except it is a Metal Gear Solid-esque stealth game, with one of the most surprising twists I have yet to find in a game.
I second Second Sight (c wut i did der?)

Republic commando for the original xbox. God I love that game. Whenever I mention it though,I sware that I can sense the ocean of "what" about to appear. I know alot of you guys haveplayed it, but in my perspective there ya go.
Literally no one I've ever known has heard of this game.
For a gritty FPS it really had me invested.
I shall spend the rest of my existence waiting for the very necessary sequel.

EXTRA:
This game taught us that "Blast" was a curse word.
Republic Commando was/is awesome! Was well gutted when I completed it, and yes it doesn need a sequel.

I cant believe that no one's heard of it though, thats crazy.
I know. Thank god for karen travis. She did that series justice in the books and stood true to the storyline of the game. But she started a new series, Imperial commando, wrote one book, the left to write Gears 2 books for Epic.

I loved that game! To bad about Sev though... he was my favorite of the bunch.
I died a little on the inside when that happened then I was just mad in general about everything.

We can't use games from the '90s!? That cuts out like 90% of all good but unheard of games ever made! >:O

I was so gonna say Rage of Mages, Space Station Silicon Valley was fun too, but slightly more well known.

Blastworks: Build, Trade, Destroy and Heavenly Guardian for the Wii. I'm also going to mention Gun.Smoke for the NES, as it's from the 1980's, not the 1990's. I dont' know how popular/well-known they are, but I almost always get a blank stare when I mention them.

Blastworks lets you make your own ship, as well as design your own levels from scratch. It's a side-scrolling shooter, and can get pretty crazy at times.

Heavenly Guardian is a pretty generic game... just run around and shoot things. The graphics are horrible (it's supposed to hearken back to games of yore, but it really doesn't), the story is bland (I think there's a story), but there's something about it I truly enjoy.

Gun.Smoke (not to be confused with the television series, which doesn't have a period in the middle), was an arcade game brought to the NES. It's set in the wild west, and you run around shooting things, getting points and money, searching for the level's bounty (boss). I'd be eternally grateful if they'd put it on the VC. It's one of my all-time favorites.

A LOT of games, brahsky.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (one of the best told story + character interaction I've seen in gaming)

Siren Blood Curse (scaryshit, m'dear)

Haunting Ground (had a little too much fanservice for my taste though)

Obscure (hurhur, fitting name)

Klonoa (move aside Mario, this platformer has you TOLD)

Shadow Hearts: Covenant (best jrpg, hands down)

Odin Sphere (beautiful presentation, engaging characters, and well told-if predictable-story)

Resonance of Fate (it's definitely kooky, but gameplay makes up for it)

Jet Set Radio Future (Best soundtrack EVER. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2HT94t-a5k] EVER. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrMS5_oNS8E] EVERRR. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYtrOjtFaRM])

Power Stone (Man, that game was tight)

Trine (I really don't understand why so few have played this game. It's freaking 5 bucks on Amazon.)

And o'course, there are the cult classics such as Psychonauts or Beyond Good & Evil.

I'm preeetty sure I'm forgetting some though...

Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates:_The_Legend_of_Black_Kat] on PS2. It was the third last game (behind Earth & Beyond and C&C Renegade) made by Westwood before it was closed. It's a shame, because aside from the mediocre cutscenes and voices, it's a pretty good game. There's also an ongoing walkthrough series [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsHoH_AFxcc] being made for it.

Aquaria [http://bit-blot.com/aquaria/] may be THE best game in the Humble Indie Bundle (1 and 2). It's a very long "metroidvania" that takes place underwater, with a very calm atmosphere, lots and lots of creature types, and over a dozen intense and unique boss fights. Most of the time, I think an indie game is really fun "for an indie game". Aquaria doesn't need that excuse, and in my book stacks up well with most modern games.

I really enjoy Jackal. Very, very fun game.

Not from the 90's (With smiles on face)
