I don't know if they're technically 'alien', but they are a race; the Fremen.

EDIT: But I just noted the 'video game' part of the title, right...

The Vortigaunts are undeniably badass.

The Quarians from Mass Effect, definitely. Their bodies are so slender and beautiful, their accents (well, at least Tali's accent) is incredibly charming, and they're great engineers, which suits me fine.

The mattresses from Hitchhiker's Guide, easily. Possibly one of the most surreal things I have read, and yet they were lovable. At least in my head they were.

The Sangheili from the Halo Universe. Proud valiant noble reptillian warrior aliens with some kickass weaponry... seriously, all hail the might of the Sangheili!!

p.s Sure there are plenty of other races that deserve a mention but seriously for my all time favourite there can really only ever be one answer.

Are you kidding?
These won't last a chance against the Protoss.

Wookies from Starwars. Oh yes. I went there
I'm inclined to agree, but then I remember how freaking awesome the Chiss are. And I think they technically fit because in one Star Wars game Grand Admiral Thrawn makes an appearance as "Captain Thrawn" and he is definitely a Chiss

True but youve got me thinking and I believe i've found a Star Wars species that tops them both. Mon Calamari.

The Nemesis, ala Resident Evil 3. Aside from he was a well designed and simple antagonist, he was well utilised in the game for that Hunted fright factor. He was reasonably smart for RE baddies, and PS1 era AI. The fact that he was more than a redesigned Tyrant really made me pleased with him. Not to mention the bastard was only beatable one-on-one once or twice (depending on where you choose your battles) during "random" encounters with him. And you usually had to invest alot of finite ammo into bringing him down. Fingers crossed there were some barrels nearby to help.

The game was totally unforgiving if you didn't have enough ammo, or whatever. He'd jump out, and you'd fight. He'd ever blow you out of the water with his Rocket Launcher, or if you managed to disarm him of it, he'd just clothes-line you, and slam you into a wall. Then IF, and I mean, IF you brought him to his knees, he'd get a 2nd wind (you were supposed to escape in that time frame), and do it all over again! He'd drop sweet loot if you could beat him a second time, though.

The only time where he was consistantly beatable was if you beat the game already and had something with infinate ammo. :)

Are we limited to only video games? Because I can't give the award for Most Awesome Alien to anyone else but the Daleks.

At least not without giving myself a brain injury, anyway.

I personally gotta go with the Hunters from Halo just as a premise. Thousands of individual identical organisms coming together to make something that powerful. Plus you have to admit that they looked kick-ass even as they were smashing your face in.

Its a 3 way choice for me:

1. Grunts from halo. Theres just something about these guys that makes me both depressed and joyfull while killing them.

2. Argonians. Every elder scrolls game i have played i am Argonian

3. Elves in general. Depending on what game/ book/ movie you take it from, they are either awesome archers, awesome sword fighters, or awesome mages or a combination of all 3.

Hunters from Halo, these walking tanks can rip through a Spartan's armour and blow the frick out of anything else in it's way. And it has a giant shield on its arm. And an arm-mounted fuel rod cannon. You Lose.
