I've been feeling rather depressed the last few weeks, one of the few things that help is music. Can you guys recommend some music to help me feel better? (Religiously oriented music would not be appreciated, nor welcome.) Anything Similar to The Smiths, The Cure, or Smashing Pumpkins would be appreciated.

Dunno much about your suggested bands, but here are some songs that never, ever fail to make me feel happy.

The top one especially is the most adorably cute songs I've ever heard.

I find depression has two states in my life.

The silent grief, with the long pseudo-philosophical thoughts during insomnia-equipped nights. For that I listen to the more downbeat music, and I can recommend Norah Jones and Melody Gardot, even if it doesn't fit your genre description.

The other type is hate-filled heart of fury, as it happens after a breakup or similar. For that I have Rage Against The Machine, Five Finger Death Punch (War is The Answer is a great breakup album ;) ), and similar rock.

Try Rage Against the Machine, the album from 1992.

"... great played at high volume when you're feeling shitty, because you'll never feel as shitty as this record."

What I was listening to when I saw this...
It's really happy and just makes you want to dance.
A cool version covered by some musicians is here-

If you're depressed, would I recommend that the Smiths are not going to make you feel much better? :p

This is very true in my experience. If you feel sombre and reflective, listen to some nice soft acoustic music:

and if you feel angsty and angry:

the internet is very well-stocked. :)

Don't know if they're close enough to the bands you mentioned, but I'd recommend checking out Amanda Palmer's The Dresden Dolls [http://youtu.be/9yC6xftLzrY] (and if you like them, try her solo album [http://youtu.be/5i0o3JRaF2g]) or Chris Corner's IAMX [http://youtu.be/G-jMWzfj9gM].

How about some Voltaire?

This one always makes me smile.
Haha, love that one. Yes, Voltaire is something you should definitely try.

'Cause this ship's going down [http://youtu.be/h5f3-jB0-do]
All on account of the weather
Though we'll drown
There's no need to frown
'Cause we're all going together
