(it's going to get a bit wordy and back-story-y here, so bare with me)

So, last night I was talking with the boyfriend about how thanks to the washing machine, my last nice bra got trashed (it ripped off the hooks even though I hooked them together prior to putting it in the wash), and that for most, if not all my underwires, the underwire had come through. So, I was in need of new bras, but I didn't know what my bra size was (only because I was pretty certain that my size had gone up since I last went bra shopping). So, to the Googles I went, and I found a site that said how to do the measurements, and it had a converter thingy that after you put your measurements in, it'd tell you your bra size. I did the measurements, and got 26/28 (something like that). I put in my measurements, and the site told me that my size was 38DD/34F.

The bras that I have are 34As. I am quite clearly a member of the itty bitty titty committee.

So, away from that site I went, and next found a site that told you how to convert the numbers into a bra size yourself. From there, I got the way more reasonable 30B/32B.

Next day (today) I made my way to Target (if you never heard of the place, the best I can describe it is 'a classy Wal*Mart'), and went in search of the underwear section. It didn't take me long to find what I was looking for, although I didn't find any non-underwires in my size or at a reasonable price. Wanting to see if they'd fit, I headed to the dressing room and tried them on. In short, they did not fit at all. They were way too tight. Annoyed since I hate shopping for undergarments, I had to put those back and went for the next size up. Same problem as the previous sizes. Again, I put the non-fitting ones back and got the next size up. Still no. Next size isn't tight, but the cup part offered almost no support.

Sigh.

I gave up on my dreams of becoming a B cup and just grab a 36A to see if that fit. Finally, I got a bra that fit, and desperately wanted to make my way away from the underwear section. However, seeing as I was only picking up the one bra for the time being (the store was starting to get very crowded, and I didn't want to pick up a bunch of underwires because of what I said before), I figured that I might as well pick up some panties. Probably could use a few new pairs.

As I'm staring at the Wall 'o Panties, I realize that I neither remember what size my underwear was, nor what type doesn't ride up my butt. I was reasonably sure what my size was, but I didn't want to pick up a size that was too big/small, so I needed to check. However, after the four or five times I went in and out of the dressing room, the attendant was sick and tired of my stupid face, so I wasn't going back there to check. So, I basically had to wedgie myself, in public, to check my damn size. After that sad act, I had to spend more time trying to find my stupid size, while looking at the underwear models as I was trying to remember if it was bikini cut or brief cut that stayed out of my butt.

However, the ever increasing swell of people there was making underwear shopping even more awkward, I simply grabbed a pack and quickly made haste to the shortest register line I could find. As if to add more insult to injury, even though the stands for the bra and panties said they were on sale, the register scanned them as regular price. At least the sweatshirt looking pullover made of pure softness I found was the super cheap sales price it said it was.

TL;DR: Underwear shopping is more difficult and embarrassing than it should be.

So ladies, have you ever faced a similar situation of embarrassment/difficulty while out shopping for such things? I've found myself a bit curious since I was trying to reason with myself that all ladies must feel such a way, and that no one cared.

As a guy I can't believe I read through all that and actually understood it.

My girlfriend doesn't have the same issues as you but that's because she has a little notebook she writes such things in - I think that might just be one of her quirks though.

Let me tell you about the time I went shopping for underwear.

I'm 5'7" so I'm not the largest of fellows, a little on the short side and I weigh in at 68kg which is supposedly 'average' for my height. So I bought some medium underwear - not Y fronts as I think the idea of being able to slip your willy out through a hole designed in underwear is completely stupid, if you can't pull them down to get your junk out then they're too small for you.

And they fit very well.

End of story.

I had to pick some up for my wife a few years back because she had to work and her bra's had got a bit small (she had a boost from being pregnant at the time).

I know fuck all about bra sizes.

Asked the nice lass at the counter who asked me what size I was looking for and did the ever so helpful holding cupped hands in front of my chest and saying "about that big".

I have never shopped for underwear since.

I'm a male (which does admittedly beg the question why I even clicked on this thread, but oh well) but I'd just like to say that itty bitty titty committee made me chuckle quite a bit. Doubly so when I imagined Morgan Freeman saying it.

But no, I've never had a problem with buying women's underwear. Mainly because I always make sure to wear my nice dress and my blonde wig while I go out.

I tend to be overwhelmed when shopping for clothes / pants more than undergarments (as I have a bit of a pear shape, it can be frustrating finding pants that fit around my hips but don't fall off my waist). If you haven't been measured very recently, trying on bras can be obnoxiously complicated. One minute you're an A cup, and the next... plus, some bras are just downright poorly designed/made.
If you have a local Victoria's Secret, they will measure your bust size for free. I went in thinking I was a 34C and came out a 32DD.

I've gotten tired of caring what other people think when I go shopping. I used to get so self conscious of everything when I shopped for clothes/underwear. I find it best to ignore everyone and pretend no one is there.

You are allowed to try on panties in the store? At my local mall they won't let you, if you don't know your size you are out of luck. For hygeiene resons I guess. Fuck, they won't even let two girls share a change room, even if they are best friends that are going to show each other how they look in the hallway anyway. Even more annoying on a busy day. I mean lots of people go shopping with their friends. SO MANY RULES!

There can't be a chance those dirty lesbians get to have touchy feely times in a public place though! Think of the children!

I too found it odd that you were able to try on underwear bottoms in the store... or maybe you just tried them on despite the rules! What a rebel.

Do not machine wash your bras. It destroys them.

I have a good set of bras. I only buy bras about once a year and take care of them. To wash them, keep them on while you shampoo and rinse. Th shampoo will clean them and then the shape is retained by fitting against your natural curves. Then, place them on a towel to dry out.

I switched to this method after loosing a really expensive bra to the dryer. The metal under wiring was ripped right out...sadness.

The kind of bra that fits you depends a lot on the brand. Also, bras come in a lot of different shapes these days so a 34C in one type will be a 32B in another. The last time I went to a nasty bra shop, the attendant tried to sell me a bra that was far too small (it is supposed to dig into your back fat like that......). The shop was aimed at younger people though, so I went to a store for women born in the 80s instead and got a good fitting and left with two new bras, hurrah!

In short, buying bras sucks. So go somewhere nice and get something decent.

In stores I do not get embarrassed. Sometimes the service there annoys me, and yes I do work in a store myself so I have no sympathy for rudeness or bad manners whether from sales people or customers.

I am sure all of us have done something silly at one point or another though

It varies from person to person. I felt the same way when I was first going out shopping, thankfully I found a brand that I liked so I no longer have to pick random ones to try on. That makes shopping so much easier. As for the panties, I know exactly how you feel. It's slightly embarrassing, but I figured half the people are just as embarrassed as me so no one cares. The other half are people like my mother who are not ashamed at all. She took me shopping with her to help her pick out a sexy outfit to surprise my dad and complained my underwear aren't sexy enough. After that normal shopping isn't as bad.

*snorts* At least you can find some in your size locally. I'm an "F" and any stores in my town don't go above a double or triple D. So I have to spend 40 plus dollars on 1 bra off a website where I can't even try them on to see if they're comfortable.

And at this point I have only one black bra which is quickly falling apart so there goes another forty dollars very soon...possibly more.

Fortunately for me, I've been about the same size all over since I was 11 years old (I was a fast grower) although I did lose a bit of weight in my teens, causing me to go down a bra size.

I remember getting fitted at an underwear shop when my old bras seemed to be looser, she gave me a 32B and I could feel it was too tight but it made my boobs look good and I was all YEAH OKAY THAT MUST BE IT I'M GONNA GO NOW and she raised an eyebrow and told me she could see it digging into my skin. One strap size up, one cup size down. 34A, deal with it.

But yeah, you're supposed to handwash bras but I never do. And in the last twelve or so years that I've been wearing and machine washing my bras, only one's bust up and the underwire's come out. I actually managed to pop it back in and sealed it over, although I guess it's still not so good for the machine...

Yeah, as a guy I can only say that you have my sympathies...

Just another unfortunate reminder that it's easier to be a guy. Underwear shopping? Hardest part is finding the part of the packaging that actually tells you the colour (for some reason the brand/type of boxers I buy come in cardboard packaging and they don't really show the colour, instead there's a sticker somewhere...).

Oh if it makes you feel any better I have a really hard time finding socks. The kind I like stopped being carried where I bought them.

Well, from a males perspective that buys new cloth only when it's dissolving the problem was that you trashed your bra in the washing machine. What you need is one of these:

It is a washing net were you put your lingerie inside so it does not get caught by the washing drum. You should be able to get them in the states. Never had any problems with the bras I wash since I use the net....

:D

I might gotten this thread totally wrong. So please excuse me if I did. ;)

Oh god, I know all too well how uncomfortable underwear shopping can be. As such, I always rush through that part of clothes shopping. Into the store, downstairs, quick look-over, grab a nice bra or two in my size, normally as part of a matching set with panties, then straight to the till. Which always has a long queue. Le sigh.

Haha, not really. My bra size is quite reliably 10B (which is the same as 32B in America and, according to the internet, 32C in the UK- I'll have bigger boobs if I go to England!) and usually I can tell just by looking that the cup isn't the right shape or size. I never try on bras in the shop. I judge them by sight and 95% of the time I'm right, and when I'm wrong it doesn't really matter because I only ever buy underwear that's on sale. I always get the same cut of underpants (the hipster briefs) which offer full butt-coverage and thus I've never had a problem with them riding up. I find that underwear shopping in all is generally a 15 minute venture.

Incidentally I don't see what's embarrassing about it. Everyone wears underwear.

Sapph. look it up.

Got nearly every size, is increadibly pretty and is very affordable (over here).

That said: finding out 36DD - 34F is your size is...pretty broad. There's usually one specific size that's a good fit, not potentially 4 different sizes. You should have your breasts measured down at a shop. They'll usually come with a very solid answer.

Be strong! It's not emberassing at all. Or at least it shouldn't be. Who are you to be ashamed of? It's fairly silly to be emberassed when standing amongst other people that are doing the exact same thing. It's not like they'll judge you...right?

I'm not judging you. Even though this is the internet.

That's one way to do it, I guess. Some shampoos have a bunch of weird stuff in them that I wouldn't really want to wash clothing with though. Just filling a small plastic tub with warm water and a little mild detergent to clean non-machine washable things like that by hand when you're already doing laundry isn't so bad. Need something to do to kill time waiting for the washer/dryer to run anyway.
