That last part is my only beef. There is no way a male would wear armor heavier than the average elephant while a female wears the latest from the Victoria's Secret catalog. It just doesn't happen, and it certainly doesn't protect as much as the elephant armor.sabaducia said:Hmm.. you obviously havn't been around many female gamers, or maybe many females. So here's the rub:Avykins said:Not this again. Who the frack cares about female gamers? Stop whining about girls in video games being hotter than you could ever, ever, ever be. Until they turn all the male characters to fat, greasey, cheeto covered slobs you have no right to complain.
Simple fact is, the majority does not want a fat, acne scarred chick any more than they do in their male leads. Apart from Mario how many ugly, unappealing male main characters are there?
The only thing that really destroys female gamers dignity is when they are seen crying over such a trivial matter.
Society likes pretty people. If you do not like it, do not buy it.
I play games. I also have D-cup breasts, weigh around 130 pounds, have never had skin problems in my life, no longer menstruate thanks to a little implant in my arm, and have been described as "nothing short of magnificent". I have it pretty good you know. I drew a lucky card in the genetics department, and I like to take care of myself. But you know what? I care about my identity too. When I play a game, I want the focus to be on game play. I want a good, believable story. I want immersive character development. I don't want unrealistic, sexually driven character design. If I'm suppose to be wearing battle armor, put me in friggin' battle armor, not a peice of tinfoil and vinyl that my nipples barely stay inside.
Actually, I don't think it's possible to put a divider between race discrimination and gender discrimination. They come down to similar things. In terms of global population white males between 25 and 50 are the minority. They just have a lot of power.sabaducia said:This is where I point out - unlike sexual orientation, race or class, GENDER is not a minority. There are problems with other representations, I know, and it does suck. But you have to see here, that HALF the world's population is being displayed as often nothing more than a sex object.HyenaThePirate said:What I find amusing is how women can isolate themselves into a group and feel misrepresented when in all honesty EVERYONE but "Good looking, tough white males" is misrepresented, under-represented, and in some cases, UN-represented at all!
For example, how many games depict African Americans or people of color as anything other than the stereotype "Big mass of muscle with that carries a heavy machine gun and moves like a wounded seal, usually voiced by Michael Clark Duncan?"
Why are almost ALL male leads, even in Japanese games represented by some effeminate ambiguous male that looks like a malnourished 12 year old instead of the typical Japanese guy?
Why are gays always ludicrously voiced and ridiculously dressed in flamboyant attire while doubling as the comic relief?
Why are Mexicans always portrayed only in bandanas and always yelling out catch-phrases like "I see you now Puto" and "Aye carumba".
Just as soon as Naughty Dog releases "Man-boob Boy and the Stretch-mark Princess", or a game where the lead black character isn't a caricature of some hip-hop loving Will Smith sci fi movie knock-off I'll be the first to sign up for the Girl Gamer cause.
The fact is, the VAST majority of gamers are male and one well-known trait of men is our sexual obsession. Seeing breasts and skimpy outfits (usually) pleases us, just because it doesn't make sense doesn't mean it won't achieve the same outcome.sabaducia said:From characters to covers, women are repeastedly represented in unrealistic, often impossible (according to physics and anatomy) ways, that are completely IRRELEVENT to their characters. So none of those "What about Superman's chest?" comebacks. He has to be strong to beat the crap out of people, you don't need GG breasts and a leather suit to be a kick-butt lady.
SO girls, what are your thoughts?
PS - I am not saying females are ALWAYS presented this way, just most of the time. A *big* most.
A good example here would be Farah from Sands Of Time.katie monsterxRAWR said:I mean, a few women in the Shadow Heart series break the personality molde but as far as physically, not even close. DD's on a girl who is 5''7', 2'' waist, and 4'' hips. Not to mention that when you play as her the camera loves the ass.
It's insane. At least in comics I have a FEW women who make me happy to be a woman.
Which will happen as soon as the audience stops caring. A cause being hampered by OP and dumb people in this thread.Spineyguy said:What I'm saying is that proper equality in all media will only come when writers and character designers can completely overlook the fact that a character is male/female, black/white and focus on what they're like as a person.
The school girl outfit thing creeps me out. Seems like pedo-fodder. Obviously I'm not the first person to think about that, but apparently it hasn't been said enough.shewolf51 said:It doesn't upset me very much, but I do get a bit annoyed if I find a game where the main character is some girl with giant breasts, tiny waist and barely enough clothes to qualify as a piece of Kleenex. Or they're dressed in the little japanese schoolgirl outfit and the game is absolute crap as if they thought the main character alone is enough to compensate for all of the faults the game has. But, growing up with games such as Tomb Raider, I guess I've grown used to it.
I think everyone knows the best example where their not, and she begins with A...sabaducia said:PS - I am not saying females are ALWAYS presented this way, just most of the time. A *big* most.
Men don't have this problem cause most men don't care how they look and are usually pretty happy with themselves.michael_ab said:yes but there seems to be a problem relating teenage girls self esteem with the media (gaming included) being flooded with barbie body women, and men do not have this problem, idk whyspinFX said:What the hell? Women are complaining about being portrayed as athletic and beautiful in games?!
Umm, hello? Men are portrayed in the same way!!!
is it really so hard to be happy?? am i the only one in the world who can be happy at will?KoreyGM said:Men don't have this problem cause most men don't care how they look and are usually pretty happy with themselves.michael_ab said:yes but there seems to be a problem relating teenage girls self esteem with the media (gaming included) being flooded with barbie body women, and men do not have this problem, idk whyspinFX said:What the hell? that was my point but i was multi tasking and couldn't fully think. heh. video games + talking on the phone + music + talking on the net + playing on the net = aprilmarie can't thinkNeutralDrow said:Japanese type? Not sure how you mean. Three of them (Sakura, Arcueid, and Rider) are drawn by the same guy (Takashi Takeuchi, of TYPE-MOON), and the others happen to be from Japanese games (Tales of the Abyss and Street Fighter), but...aprilmarie said:I'm sorry to point out this but do you notice they are all japanese type characters?NeutralDrow said:Same. I prefer to imagine her looking like she did in SC2...which isn't hard, since that's the one I still play.aprilmarie said:Ivy's cool and all but I fear what will happen in the next SC game, she's going to be all boobs and less clothing than she already has.
Honestly, it's the clothing more than the chest size that bothers me (though yeah, I tend to minimize the chest slider during my character creation, too). I don't really have much of a problem with large-breasted female characters who <url=http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3599/340l.jpg>don't <url=http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/208/404964-arcueid_large.jpg>dress <url=http://bestgamewallpapers.com/files/tales-of-the-abyss/tear-grants.jpg>like <url=http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Other/Features/2008/Street%20Fighter%20Retrospectives/Chun-li%20and%20Blanka/screens/Chun-Li_SF_Alpha_2_Gold--article_image.jpg>skanks.Personally I'd go for girls in ALL forms of media to not have overtly gigantic breasts and guys to not be overtly muscular macho men.
Mostly, however, I just ignore it and in games such as SC4 I make my own character who looks like a more realistic kind of girl.

And there's still a few I don't mind, anyway. I'm sorry, lack of dress or no, <url=http://www.capcom.co.jp/fate_uc/img/wallpaper/wp10_1024x768.jpg>Rider is still awesome.
i swear, this was at a passing glance, but did you know she wears pink underwear?TheXRatedDodo said:I'm not even a woman and *I'M* tired of women being presented with very little dignity.
Gaming needs more female rolemodels like Alyx Vance.
I cannot think of a single better written female character in any video game to date.
