I think the majority come from the Japanese side of the market: X blades, Bikini Samurai Squad and various fighting games (Tekken) which have more physics dedicated for the breasts than say the game itself.

It's just what sells, it's not very fair, but the world of advertising isn't very fair.

Not this again. Who the frack cares about female gamers? Stop whining about girls in video games being hotter than you could ever, ever, ever be. Until they turn all the male characters to fat, greasey, cheeto covered slobs you have no right to complain.
Simple fact is, the majority does not want a fat, acne scarred chick any more than they do in their male leads. Apart from Mario how many ugly, unappealing male main characters are there?
The only thing that really destroys female gamers dignity is when they are seen crying over such a trivial matter.
Society likes pretty people. If you do not like it, do not buy it.
Hmm.. you obviously havn't been around many female gamers, or maybe many females. So here's the rub:
I play games. I also have D-cup breasts, weigh around 130 pounds, have never had skin problems in my life, no longer menstruate thanks to a little implant in my arm, and have been described as "nothing short of magnificent". I have it pretty good you know. I drew a lucky card in the genetics department, and I like to take care of myself. But you know what? I care about my identity too. When I play a game, I want the focus to be on game play. I want a good, believable story. I want immersive character development. I don't want unrealistic, sexually driven character design. If I'm suppose to be wearing battle armor, put me in friggin' battle armor, not a peice of tinfoil and vinyl that my nipples barely stay inside.
That last part is my only beef. There is no way a male would wear armor heavier than the average elephant while a female wears the latest from the Victoria's Secret catalog. It just doesn't happen, and it certainly doesn't protect as much as the elephant armor.

But as for breast size and waist size (Which have been problems since the days of Barby and, unfortunately, even invaded one of the older Pixar Shorts (Knick-Knack, though the later release did reduce the breast size, acknowledging the error in judgment)), I don't really mind. As long as they don't present any actual problems in gameplay (Larger killbox, smaller killbox, killbox size in general, etc.) I find it simple to just ignore them. Am I watching my characters exposed skin as I run around in UT2004? No, because I play a robot (Cuz Robots are so much better than humans anyways). But I don't really care about the enemy's exposed skin either, cuz odds are if I take the time to notice that, I'm dead. And I don't like dying.

I'm a Male btw.

What I find amusing is how women can isolate themselves into a group and feel misrepresented when in all honesty EVERYONE but "Good looking, tough white males" is misrepresented, under-represented, and in some cases, UN-represented at all!

For example, how many games depict African Americans or people of color as anything other than the stereotype "Big mass of muscle with that carries a heavy machine gun and moves like a wounded seal, usually voiced by Michael Clark Duncan?"

Why are almost ALL male leads, even in Japanese games represented by some effeminate ambiguous male that looks like a malnourished 12 year old instead of the typical Japanese guy?

Why are gays always ludicrously voiced and ridiculously dressed in flamboyant attire while doubling as the comic relief?

Why are Mexicans always portrayed only in bandanas and always yelling out catch-phrases like "I see you now Puto" and "Aye carumba".

Just as soon as Naughty Dog releases "Man-boob Boy and the Stretch-mark Princess", or a game where the lead black character isn't a caricature of some hip-hop loving Will Smith sci fi movie knock-off I'll be the first to sign up for the Girl Gamer cause.
This is where I point out - unlike sexual orientation, race or class, GENDER is not a minority. There are problems with other representations, I know, and it does suck. But you have to see here, that HALF the world's population is being displayed as often nothing more than a sex object.
Actually, I don't think it's possible to put a divider between race discrimination and gender discrimination. They come down to similar things. In terms of global population white males between 25 and 50 are the minority. They just have a lot of power.

From characters to covers, women are repeastedly represented in unrealistic, often impossible (according to physics and anatomy) ways, that are completely IRRELEVENT to their characters. So none of those "What about Superman's chest?" comebacks. He has to be strong to beat the crap out of people, you don't need GG breasts and a leather suit to be a kick-butt lady.
SO girls, what are your thoughts?
PS - I am not saying females are ALWAYS presented this way, just most of the time. A *big* most.
The fact is, the VAST majority of gamers are male and one well-known trait of men is our sexual obsession. Seeing breasts and skimpy outfits (usually) pleases us, just because it doesn't make sense doesn't mean it won't achieve the same outcome.

As long as men like oggling ladies and are also the majority of gamers most games will see this as an easy marketing ploy. As the ludicrous publicitly and plethora of mods for Zoe from Left for Dead show, if we're not giving enough breast physics we'll make it ourselves (also see DOA).

Men like boobs + men buy the most games = boobs sell games

I mean, a few women in the Shadow Heart series break the personality molde but as far as physically, not even close. DD's on a girl who is 5''7', 2'' waist, and 4'' hips. Not to mention that when you play as her the camera loves the ass.

It's insane. At least in comics I have a FEW women who make me happy to be a woman.
A good example here would be Farah from Sands Of Time.

I have to agree with most posts here about the fact that women are indeed becoming a stereotype in gaming, being depicted as having injected steroids into their bra, but female gamers have to come in terms with what truly characterizes a female (in gaming at least): their personality. That's what I see or try to see behind Ivy or Rachel's rack. The result is not always satisfactory, I did not like neither Ivy nor Rachel and I did not like Sheva either (mostly cause the costume is starting to prove what Capcom has started to deteriorate into thanks to that and useless DLC). But there are times when a female in gaming has truly set a milestone. Jill Valentine, Samus, Dr. Tennenbaum from Bioshock.

The damsel in distress in starting to fade if you ask me. See the Fallout 3 expansions.

Getting mad about sexism in gaming is not worth it. Mainly cause it sells. GTA SA sold like crazy and along with that Vice City and GTA3. It is pathetic that some developers still see it as a selling point but hey, it's not like us guys are lesser victims. You think everyone has the pleasure of having Redfield's triceps? Or Marcus Phenix's 'badass' attidute?

But yeah, from where I am standing, women are overused as stereotypes in games. Still every so often there comes someone that shows us that defending the-let's say-sanctity of gaming is worth caring for. Yahtzee said so himself when he reviewed Silent Hill 2. And everyone who has played Silent Hill 2 knows that Maria was amazing. Getting angry is pointless cause it is not gonna change anything. All you can do is hope.

Pretty much sums it all up. The media has created an ideal of beauty to the point no one on the face of this world can ever live up to it. Not until we can photoshop ourselves and all afford top of the line mark up artists.

What I'm saying is that proper equality in all media will only come when writers and character designers can completely overlook the fact that a character is male/female, black/white and focus on what they're like as a person.
Which will happen as soon as the audience stops caring. A cause being hampered by OP and dumb people in this thread.

I hope some day we will look back and laugh that we ever called Chell a good female character.

It doesn't upset me very much, but I do get a bit annoyed if I find a game where the main character is some girl with giant breasts, tiny waist and barely enough clothes to qualify as a piece of Kleenex. Or they're dressed in the little japanese schoolgirl outfit and the game is absolute crap as if they thought the main character alone is enough to compensate for all of the faults the game has. But, growing up with games such as Tomb Raider, I guess I've grown used to it.
The school girl outfit thing creeps me out. Seems like pedo-fodder. Obviously I'm not the first person to think about that, but apparently it hasn't been said enough.

I think everyone knows the best example where their not, and she begins with A...

To be honest, I'd say that most women, and people in fact, should be represented more like her i.e. more human.

What the hell? Women are complaining about being portrayed as athletic and beautiful in games?!

Umm, hello? Men are portrayed in the same way!!!
yes but there seems to be a problem relating teenage girls self esteem with the media (gaming included) being flooded with barbie body women, and men do not have this problem, idk why
Men don't have this problem cause most men don't care how they look and are usually pretty happy with themselves.

Really, I didn't know we had women on the interwebs.

All kidding aside, Is it fair to say that "sexy" (large breasted, small waist} women should be taken out of gaming? Sure it's not my favourite stereotype in terms of characterization and personal likes goes for me, however, all media has to have a majority of role models seem to be inhumanly perfect to have an unattainable goal. To continue the strive for human perfection. Of course this means it can turn looking good into a full time job for those who end up being caring more for the opinions of others then they do of their own. However the "misrepresentation" is both true and untrue, well the percentages of "top heavy" females in game is extremely higher then that of reality, any specific portion isn't a fabrication. Sure looking like that is, in most cases impossible but having a body part look like those in the games isn't. Sure you could go out and get Ivy's implants, but would they function as a draw the same way as in a game, probably not. This is simply because well a game can be sold on pleasure, that is all it is, a game. Sure I sound like a guy out to caress the women of video games, but really, I think that most of it (other than the idiots at capcom) is used to make the game seem more unrealistic. Most video games if they were to much like real life, wouldn't be much fun, unless your completely socially awkward.

To sum up my argument, yes you can get upset about the vast majority of games having main females wearing the equivalant to a hat of clothing but, isn't it in itself an indicator of a game that doesn't have it's own merits to stand on?

Wouldn't that be enough to throw out the whole idea to get mad about it because a character is imhumanly perfect, and even if they are. If you're looking for good characterization and story telling or plot, then why does it matter how she looks? If you wanted to make your own leading female based on what you want them to look like, you could play a game that allows you to do so, like an mmorpg. Or you could just to read a book.

So yeah go on, complain, will it change, well maybe, depends of how much of the consumer base you manage to refuse to buy a game because the lead is, too sexy. You have every right to try though, and more power to yeah.

Huzzah. I find myself with more ammo: Ninja Gaiden 2 - now you can make her tits jiggle yourself! WITH YOUR sixaxis controller!
*facepalm*
Really?
Is this what men want?
Why don't you go get a girlfriend, and figure out how it works in the real world. Now I BELIEVE the article about most gamers being overweight, friendless introverts.

Ivy's cool and all but I fear what will happen in the next SC game, she's going to be all boobs and less clothing than she already has.
Same. I prefer to imagine her looking like she did in SC2...which isn't hard, since that's the one I still play.

Personally I'd go for girls in ALL forms of media to not have overtly gigantic breasts and guys to not be overtly muscular macho men.

Mostly, however, I just ignore it and in games such as SC4 I make my own character who looks like a more realistic kind of girl.
Honestly, it's the clothing more than the chest size that bothers me (though yeah, I tend to minimize the chest slider during my character creation, too). I don't really have much of a problem with large-breasted female characters who <url=http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3599/340l.jpg>don't <url=http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/208/404964-arcueid_large.jpg>dress <url=http://bestgamewallpapers.com/files/tales-of-the-abyss/tear-grants.jpg>like <url=http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Other/Features/2008/Street%20Fighter%20Retrospectives/Chun-li%20and%20Blanka/screens/Chun-Li_SF_Alpha_2_Gold--article_image.jpg>skanks.

_>

And there's still a few I don't mind, anyway. I'm sorry, lack of dress or no, <url=http://www.capcom.co.jp/fate_uc/img/wallpaper/wp10_1024x768.jpg>Rider is still awesome.
I'm sorry to point out this but do you notice they are all japanese type characters?
Japanese type? Not sure how you mean. Three of them (Sakura, Arcueid, and Rider) are drawn by the same guy (Takashi Takeuchi, of TYPE-MOON), and the others happen to be from Japanese games (Tales of the Abyss and Street Fighter), but...
that was my point but i was multi tasking and couldn't fully think. heh. video games + talking on the phone + music + talking on the net + playing on the net = aprilmarie can't think

im male and im tired of females being presented as just a pair of breasts attatched to a bamboo cane, im also offended to be the target audience of games with these female charaters. having said that, i do realise that most game developers have realised that most gamers are teenage males and mostly only think about one thing...

I'm not even a woman and *I'M* tired of women being presented with very little dignity.

Gaming needs more female rolemodels like Alyx Vance.
I cannot think of a single better written female character in any video game to date.
i swear, this was at a passing glance, but did you know she wears pink underwear?
sorry i had to bring her down alittle bit :p
