And that my friends, is why I don't get a camera :D
Pictures = stupid attention? :p
its true. whether you are a boy or a girl, if you've got a picture of yourself on your Xbox live, people are going to comment on it. and because many of the x-box live players are pretty low on the intelligence scale, then the attention you recieve will be, in theory, stupid attention (if you are on it for than 12+ hours straight, playing Call Of Duty or what have you, then its because you don't go to school and don't have a job... probably because you made some poor, unintelligent choices... i.e my other older brother)
That does make sense logically. I do feel though that girls are probably targeted more then guys would be in that instance. Especially with the ''r u hot'' ''a/s/l'' ''make me a sammich'' fodder that's usually thrown at us. :/

I do acknowledge that guys also face issues, but it's usually a different line of insults altogether, not really relaxing to sex.
If its an actual picture of yourself, then i disagree to an extent, they are targeted equally (but the girls will recieve sexual harrassment, whilst the guys will just be told how ugly and homosexual they must be). But if its a picture of your gamer avatar (forgot what those things are called) then i think it is very rare to get picked on as a boy and i suppose girls do get singled out in that sense. I guess there is a wider range of insults for the girls as well. you listed 3, i know we can both think of many more, whilst guys only get accused of being a noob, Ugly or Gay.

Ahem, Women of the world on behalf of all the imature fuckwads of our sex I would like to formally apologize for the following misconduct:
Uhh... not to be an ass or anything, but I refuse to apologize for something I'm not responsible for. You might as well blame Canada...
Understand that I am not saying ALL men on the internet are ass hats. just the large majority.
also, I wish there was a sarcasm button on the forums ^.^

Yeah it does seem to be asking for it. When i'm not on a board i can trust to respond seriously i normally drop the daughterof in my name or make up something else that is unisex
Wait, so not pretending to be a dude means you deserve whatever harassment some random douchebags feel like throwing at you? Cause, uh.

Either they crave attention, or do want to be treated as a girl/woman and not 'one of the guys'. Here is a question, how many girls/women use unisex names that you're just not aware of?
Probably quite a few.
I use a gender neutral name on Steam. It doesn't happen often, but I've been harassed for being a girl enough times that I don't use voicechat unless I'm playing with my friends or on a few select servers. I hate the attitude that having a feminine name or not hiding the fact that you're a girl suddenly means you deserve to have drooling dipshits spam you with requests to see your tits and I can get my righteous feminist rage on with the best of them, but it's exhausting and annoying, ir rarely helps or gets them to back down, and sometimes I just want to play some shootan gaems instead of singlehandedly trying to get idiots on the internet to respect women.

As for when I do use a female name -- sometimes I like being called by an actual name. I don't want to use a boy's name because I'm not a boy. That doesn't mean I want special attention or to be treated substantially differently (a friend of mine apologises whenever he cusses in front of me, and it kind of drives me nuts), I just like using a name that I think suits me. The name I use here is obviously female, and I use it because I like it, not because I want to get something from someone.

Hence why I wouldn't use a mic set on any of the online console games.
Ventrilo makes it easier for computer games, and even then you don't have to talk.
I almost always use gender-neutral names for an account, simply because I'm a person first and a woman second.

I was going to edit the 'being treated like a girl/women' part originally... but decided I didn't care and left it open to interpretation. Though I could have settled for 'respect' or something along those lines.

I've never seen a vision camera being used online. Is it just a snapshot of your face as your gamer pic? Or what does it do?

Anyways, as people have already mentioned, a lot of it has to do with the pre-conceived notion that the gaming arena is dominated by men. Running off of this, a lot of them lack the social interaction capabilities of actually interacting with a woman. Furthermore, they also back up this abuse with "I'll never speak with *insert name here* again anyway, so I might as well mess with them."

These things mixed with the "I have to be funny so people like me" idea, all add up to the degradation/exclusion of women in online gaming.

I always wonder why girls don't dish it back to the boys. Are we just too polite? I don't quite get it. Then again, I'm not on XBL...
Probably because it isn't worth it to even bother. Most of the time, if you do fight back, they'll just scream over you or love the fact that you're actually responding. Or at least, thats what I've seen from games I've been in when I watch this banter from the sidelines.
