I like this. I'd probably avoid her in real life due to the awful mental scars and general insanity, but she's still awesome!

Actually, the mental scars and general insanity are kind of what draw me to her. Plus, she isn't really unattractive, as you see on the game artwork Haha, but yeah, the insanity is the main attraction for me. I just have a really dark side that no-one really knows about, but it's hidden there beneath the surface (I came up with an idea for a series of short films once, and one of the main characters was a girl of around 18 y/o who's basically a lot like Alice... except not quite as murderous, as it were.).

Jesus people, are you serious? Ashley Williams? Alyx Vance? Zoey?
They are all very attractive women with perfectly symetrical faces, flawless figures and no physical defects at all. Just because they aren't presented in overtly sexual way, doesn't mean they're not beautiful. I've never seen a plainly unattractive woman as a positive character in a video game.
The truth is good looking people provoke more sympathy and that's why they're always be protagonists.

At the end of the day, female protagonists are unlikely to ever be the gritty, unashame- of-being-unattractive characters that we can see with the males. I mean, even in Gears of War the woman we saw was pretty damn attractive. It's a huge generalization to say that women want to play as attractive females but I know that personally it used to be true for me. Certainly the closer to average characters are coming from the western game market, Japan simply makes too much money from hot figurines from videogames to change their tactics yet.

I think Alyx Vance is the epitome of this. She isn't at all unattractive, but you can tell that her being incredibly hot wasn't a priority of Valve's, and she's a better character because of it.

I'll agree (partially) with you on Alyx, and with Chell from Portal. Alyx is at least attractive, but Chell looks like a average woman.

I have much respect for Valve.

Yah I'm surprised no one mentioned the women (whose names I can't remember at the moment) from silent hill 1. They weren't attractive at all, although most of the candidates from ps1 games are probably ugly because of the graphics limitations at the times and not so much the original intent of beauty but that's just me.

So yah, the bike cop and the nurse from silent hill 1, for that fact the old bitchy lady as well

I'd love to throw in Laverne from "The Day Of The Tentacle", a LucasArts GEM. Play it now. Anyway, Laverne was... frankly kinda hideous, and the game takes note of it, with the various characters telling her how homely she is. But she's such a whackjob, you love her anyway. It's all nicely subverted when she disguises herself as a tentacle, and all the other tentacles think she's hot.
