It's one of my fantasies to have an open world game set in the far east. RPG or just an action adventure game. The closest thing to that will be that new free to play MMO (Age of Wulin) set in medieval China.
If anyone here still owns a PS2, you might want to check "Shinobido: The way of ninja". It's not a free roaming game, but you can do a lot of awesome things, and levels are kind of open-ended, and you can leave them when you so choose.

Man, I swear I saw a game like this advertised on the back of an old manual like 10 years ago. It might have been Arcanum's manual. It was sort of Baldur's Gate 2/Icewind Dale style isometric party centric. I don't think I ever found whatever it was though. I actually came back into this thread hoping I could find out as the thread made me remember seeing it.
you're thinking throne of darkness, it's diablo-esque
wanted this exact type of game since I was kid, on the border of trying a hand indie-izing the idea one of these days. shogun2 is the closest you can get if you live that japanese fantasy westerns war movie lalaland in your head aswell. signed up to give the man an answer and honestly I've typed feudal japan rpg in google search quite a few times now.
seriously though if anyone knows anything of coding(oh lol) let's take a couple of folk tales and illustrations and make a hour long 2d maquete of a thing where you play a man who kills things with honor, ill do awesome art and a shoddy try at sound design, I DREAM OF IT
