I actually think an Assassin's Creed set in Feudal Japan would be much more interesting than any open world RPG with the setting.
I second this motion. All in favor?
Aye!

It's one of my fantasies to have an open world game set in the far east. RPG or just an action adventure game. The closest thing to that will be that new free to play MMO (Age of Wulin) set in medieval China.

If anyone here still owns a PS2, you might want to check "Shinobido: The way of ninja". It's not a free roaming game, but you can do a lot of awesome things, and levels are kind of open-ended, and you can leave them when you so choose.

Man, I swear I saw a game like this advertised on the back of an old manual like 10 years ago. It might have been Arcanum's manual. It was sort of Baldur's Gate 2/Icewind Dale style isometric party centric. I don't think I ever found whatever it was though. I actually came back into this thread hoping I could find out as the thread made me remember seeing it.

you're thinking throne of darkness, it's diablo-esque

wanted this exact type of game since I was kid, on the border of trying a hand indie-izing the idea one of these days. shogun2 is the closest you can get if you live that japanese fantasy westerns war movie lalaland in your head aswell. signed up to give the man an answer and honestly I've typed feudal japan rpg in google search quite a few times now.

seriously though if anyone knows anything of coding(oh lol) let's take a couple of folk tales and illustrations and make a hour long 2d maquete of a thing where you play a man who kills things with honor, ill do awesome art and a shoddy try at sound design, I DREAM OF IT

Dude, I love you for signing up just to answer that for me. I saw the advertisement about 10 years ago and lost my manual to arcanum (have yet to replace it) about 7 years ago and always wanted to know what that game was. As well, I am more interested in coding than graphics. However, I am still learning how to code an engine. I do have an idea for a 2d (fake 3D) engine meant for turn based combat. I'll send you a PM this weekend and we'll talk about some stuff if you want.

You might want to check out "Seal of Evil" and "Prince of Qin", although they're set in China instead of Japan.

Legend of the five rings is probably the greatest IP that has naver been used in gaming. To bad not many people seems to know about it.

It would make a great open world RPG.

I would like to see a Western style RPG in a setting based on japanese folklore. I want an RPG set in Japan, not a 'JRPG'.

Though I have to say an fantasy RPG using Native American myths and legends would be pretty amazing as well. As much as I can enjoy Elves and Dwarves and such(and JRPGs), there are so many different places to go.

Feudal Japan? Obligatory:

SHAMEFUR DISPRAY!!!!

With that out the way, yes, I would probably buy it. Maybe the game would be better off not being like Skyrim. Feudal Japan didnt have a lot of caves to clear out.
The enemy is running like heathens from a preacher, sir!

I would like to see a western style RPG based on that, it would be a really nice change of pace

on that note i do reccomend trying out Jade Empire, ok its based on China and not Japan and its more like a short action orientated KotOR than TES but its good and interesting

I just finished reading Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa and Shogun by James Clavell and this thought excites me greatly. There is a lot of untapped potential for this period, and I don't understand how video games have not taken advantage, neh.

I did some 3d work quite a few years ago, much more textures than actual models, and I have a shitload of design ideas, no proper experience in making anything other than assets though, only fiddled with code for little more than just I needed and recent attempts to explore the game maker&co universe of programs, do get in touch

I WOULD really like to see an RPG set in Japan. Sengoku Era is of course the msot popular due to the conflicts involved, but I think you could eras such as the Bakumatsu as well. Skyrim style probably work so well, but it wouldn't bad. I'd prefer a more 3rd party, action RPG system.

I think a more fantastical bent could also work. Maybe bring in mythology and monsters like oni, kitsune, demons, and whole bunch of other stuff. Heck, you could even do a straight up fictional version of Japan and just let it be pure fantasy. I really would like to see more Eastern mythos brought up in games. Very fascinating

That sounds very exciting. I know the knights Templars will be on the samurial side.
