Maybe... but only if it were made by a multicultural team with various religious beliefs.

I have been dying for an RPG to come out like this since forever.
There's Way of the Samurai 4, it's set in 1855 but it has samurais and shit. It's like RDR, set at the end of an era but reminiscent of earlier periods. It's more of an action-adventure though like Yakuza, not so much an open world RPG.

I'd definitely play an open world RPG in feudal Japan, but I'm not urging for one. I've still got Tenchu, I'm yet to even play Tenchu Z on 360 and that was released years ago. Still though, good idea.
I just wish they would create a new and improved Tenchu game for 'next-gen consoles' ( Xbox360 + Ps3 ), I haven't played a decent Tenchu game in years....

As for the idea of a open world RPG set in feudal Japan... I would like to play that, I immensely enjoyed the Way of the Samurai games in the past and always wished that they were a wee bit more open.

Likes this idea better then a game set in Feudal Japan.
Sorry, Japanese mythology never appealed to me much.

No.

nonononono.

I would not buy it, for the sole reason that it is in feudal japan. Nothing about feudal japan is all that interesting (Besides seppuku, crazy Asians). Their religion was based around observing thing in nature, their political system was basically warlord A vs warlord B for 2 more sq inches of land, and trying to get a china.

On a more comical note, I don't want to watch NPC's mouths move for another ten seconds, after the dialog has ended.

Its called Tenchu. Its a game about ninja assassins. Some of the titles are good, others are bad.

Tenchu isn't really an open world series, nor an RPG. That said, I would totally play an AC game set in feudal Japan, because I love the setting, and the AC series in general.

I do want a new Tenchu game, too. Z on the xbox 360 was pretty poor, I want another one like Wrath of Heaven.

If it was brand new IP? Sure I'd give it a shot, but not if it was something like Assassins Creed like people in this thread are talking about

Surely out of the seemingly massive library of jrpg out there there's something that fulfills this need? I mean the j in jrpg does stand for japan.

Or do you mean specifically that you want a western style rpg in a japanes setting because... well, that could actually be interesting I guess. I've been playing Shogun 2 lately and it's been a blast after all! Anyway Neverwinter Nights and Mount & Blade both have mods set in Japanese style settings but I can't think of any designed from the start with that in mind. Jade Empire perhaps, but that's more Chinese oriented than Japanese.

Ultima Underworld and Arx Fatalis. Your wish has been granted!

The closest thing I can recommend is Muramasa: The Demon Blade, on the Wii. It's more of a hack-and-slash with RPG elements than an actual RPG, but I liked it, not enough people have played it, and it's in Feudal Japan. Look it up if you're interested.

Nooo, my post was deleted.;_; I hate the scroll on this laptop. It did the weirdest thing where it just opened a picture. Back button, post is gone. I'm too tired to type the whole darn thing out again.

How about an old Japan sandbox in general? Though I wouldn't want to have Bethesda in charge of it. They have very limited character interaction, and they would completely fail at making Japanese faces.

I think that warlord based themes are kinda overdone in "old Japan" games. Because everybody loves the samurai so much. What's really interesting though is the drama of people's lives. I'd like to play as an Ainu, or something.

This post is completely unfulfilling in comparison to my original post. I really wish that the Escapist remembered posts. It'd take too much effort to attempt to get across what I actually want to say, now, but now my post is horrible and meaningless.

How is that not incredibly interesting?

The closest thing to that is the Suikoden series which are indeed not set in actual Japan but take from it and also from warring states China quite a bit.

With Jrpgs it's almost never a real world setting, that's too restrictive. The only ones that do it well like persona or TWEWY also borrow a ton from anime themes and other existing forces beyond merely being about modern life.

My favorite game about feudal Japan is probably Genji, although slightly too short it was amazing. Also Tenchu was great up until the third game, the move on xbox, psp and the wii killed off that once great series. Judging from how popular Assasin's Creed is Tenchu could easily have been huge right now.

@.@ I never said Tenchu was an RPG. My Tenchu response is directed only at the AC reference. I do understand they are different games, but the idea behind them is similar. Historical fiction assassination games.
