Why post my same post time and time again?
This video sums it up for me pretty well:

The music is so amazing. If I hear it, it transports me back in time; I can remember what I was thinking when I played, I can remember smells, tastes, sights from that music.

Waiting on rebuttal!
I already told him that I wasn't going to throw in my arguments. There's not going to BE a rebuttal at this time. For once, I just wanted to hear the other side's opinion. My conclusion is that other people find fun in different challenges than I do, and that what irks me isn't entirely universal. I'm not going to agree with his statement, but I don't feel like getting into it now. This is how we learn things.

First, I played it recently for the first time and it was quite OK, not the best JRPG ever, but still a good game.
Second, I wouldn't say it's overrated, it was the first FF for the PlayStation and for many, the first FF game, that's why it sold like crazy. (which may be the reason for the "overratedness")
Third, why are you complaining about it when there are LOADS of other overrated games, namely, anything by Valve, to be specific, Portal. It just is NOT the best game of all time.

I don't think 7 is a bad game. I just think it hasnt aged well.
(really though your going to say 10 is better)

Edit: Don't mind me, I just have a knee jerk reaction at people who hate for no real reason.
Stop hating on the TC for no reason then. He didn't say "FF7 sux huuuur". I see plenty of example of things he didn't like or felt the game did poorly to back up his thoughts. Really, it seems a lot more like you're doing "he disagrees with me he sux huuuuur" than TC doing "it's popular so it sux huuuuur" like you claim he is.

Your flame bait must make you feel really good, eh?

I hope you enjoy video games. I also hope you stop insulting others.
You're right. CLEARLY nobody could have a legitimate reason to hate FF7 /sarcasm

Because this keeps being brought up, watch this highly informative video.

OP: By 1997 standards, FFVII had very good graphics. But graphics don't make the game.
Uh. No it didn't. Even for its time, FF7's visuals are pretty horrendous. The characters are a huge joke. The narrative is a crying shame. However, it does successfully mark a point where FF starts (rapidly) going downhill. As for FF10/12? At least mediocre is better than utter trash.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play a game with truly stunning visual for its time. Nights Into Dreams, and it came out a full year before FF7.

And it will never grow into a beautiful swan :(

As for the reviewer in that video, the word "overrated" is just so...overrated. I'm not a militant FFVII fan or anything, but saying that something is overrated is just a silly thing to say. People think it's good. People like the story. That's just how it is. How asinine is it to call someone stupid for liking something as subjective as video games are?

Because... almost nothing about FF7 is particularly well done. From visuals (ugly for its time) to characters (under developed and forgettable) to the basic cluster fuck that is the attempt at narrative at it.

Going to put this in for the sake of it, but Sephiroth is a failure-villain. Especially compared to THIS guy.

As guy in video said. "Crazy mother fucker. Destroys the world, half way through the game."

I liked the game because I enjoyed playing it, even today it's the same, graphics don't matter, for me if was fun so no argument from anyone else will convince me otherwise so I don't need to explain my reasoning any more than this.

BTW for me FFX was balls but each to their own and glad you had a good experience with the game, which is all that matters.

Okay...but none of those things are facts...those are opinions. You didn't like the story, that's fine...but you not liking it is completely different than it being hands-down the worst thing ever written. Please...learn to differentiate YOUR OPINIONS from fact.

Also:

WTF is this? Now I have to watch an ad just to see the damn captcha?

Actually, the narrative of FF7 has almost no merit to it. Especially when compared to previous titles. FF5, the game with lackluster narrative in the 16-bit era's narrative holds up way better than final fantasy 7's.

The character's ARE pretty awful. A few 2D characters, most of which are shallow stereotypes. Almost made me wish for Locke Cole back. Screw that. It DID make me wish for Locke back. 'Cause Lock was awesome.

Honestly, it cannot be denied. Far more aesthetically pleasing games existed before FF7. Nights Into Dreams for example, beautiful game.

It's not the worst thing ever written. It's just a huge, HUGE step down from previous titles and was clearly moving in the wrong direction.

By the way, I DID play it new. It was just a massive disappointment.

Oh, and you know what else is over rated? Dragon Quest 1. It codified the genre, really established core mechanics. But it wasn't a particularly good game itself.

Now, you didn't mention anything about Final Fantasy 8. That's interesting. Maybe you have nothing to say about it or don't want to, but I have to say that if you REALLY want to name a not-great game out of the series? BAM. There's your target. However, I'm going to stop there about it because my rants on the subject are massive and are now only spoken of on demand. You can ask, but I'm getting back on topic now.
I agree...but check this out:

FF VIII reinterpreted as a "Jacob's Ladder" of sorts...sure it's just a theory (with plenty of holes too) but it makes the game a bit better, IMO.

Seen it, interesting take, but it doesn't make me want to replay the game.

I've never played a final fantasy game in my life, but I heard that VI was the best out of the series. Should I start with VI or VII?

I donated my old grey PS1 to charity so I'll need to get an emulator or steal my nephew's to play :p

Start with VI. Fantastic title all around. I'd also give the 4 and 5 a gander.

And xenogears for PS1. It's also good.

In other words, there are few games from that era that I think are still worth playing.
I have a list of 'em. If you want it, you'll have to give me a while. Sleep and then consulting my database.
