The thing is that most gamers who criticize FF7 nowadays were too young to play it when it first came out. Of course there are visually surperior titles available, of course the gameplay is much more refined now.

I played the game a few days after it's release and had a great time with it. Remember: That was before Sephiroth and Aeris became a punchline and fandom exploded in your face. Simply because you didn't know how everything was going to turn out and who would die. And the Internet wasn't a spoiler machine.

I think you should change "FFVII wasn't good for me", because from an objective standpoint it was great.

Anyone who disputes this is doing so because they are either comparing it to modern games or just don't like it because it was popular.

That's a pretty grave insult. How about us gamers that remember a better age for final fantasy as a series? Sigh...

Actually, it falls flat on its face compared to newer and older games.

Hey, I'm with you on that ;)
I remember FF4 and FF6 fondly, I was just saying that it's no wonder many gamers who are experiencing FF7 nowadays for the first time are a bit underwhelmed.

I grew up playing the Final Fantasy games, although for some reason I never played FF7. 4 and 6 are, like so many other people have said, my favourite memories of the series, although I was VERY young so they're slightly hazy.
Because I played them all so long ago I've now taken it upon myself to play through pretty much all the Final Fantasy games I have little to no memory of, as a result last year I decided to play FF7 for the very first time.

I seriously enjoyed it. Sure, it's not my favourite, but it's a damn fun game and I know I'm not speaking from a nostalgic viewpoint. I had a brilliant time playing it and I personally think it still stands up well today, of course that is just my opinion. I don't think FF7 deserves some of the hate it gets, nor does it deserve some of the huge fandom, but its a good game. So maybe don't just insult it because it's the fashionable thing to do?

Games that have a better story to it: panzer dragoon saga, mass effect and Final Fantasy X.

Better graphics: anything during and after 16-bit era pretty much. I love how graphics don't matter now but back in the day when it was more modern it was a key part of it.

music: wile I admit that the score themselves are amazing it sounds like a midi keyboard, which 16-bit sounds better than that. I know games on the GBA that sound better.

Games that have better battle systems: FFX, V, tactics(all), golden sun(all) and panzer dragoon saga.

Exploration is tedious at best, golden sun way out dose FFVII in that respect.

I love how his opinion is subjective and yours is objective.

Since when are FFVII's graphics not good? They were as good, or better than anything else out at the time.

I'm not trying to be FFVII fanboy here...but when you say the graphics aren't good, what you really mean to say is that the overworld character models aren't good. And I can totally understand that, but they were a payoff.

In order to make the rest of the game as beautiful as it is, and because they were new to the whole 3D thing, they had to cut back on some things. And even so, it resembles the way the characters were portrayed in earlier FF's.

I for one thing Squaresoft did a great job with the visuals.

Although for the record: My favorite Final Fantasy game is and always will be Final Fantasy IX, Zidane was a unique and fun character who never gave up and always had a laugh for something. Garnet and her knight, Eiko and Frey. And Kuja. Damn but he was a good villain, he was sinister and powerful, and ultimately, human and frightened of dying.

That kind of epic story is what final fantasy is about to me.
i agree with this my favourite final fantasy game was 9 aswell :)

meh I see where you are coming from but no one says resident evil is a graphical master piece, the cinematic are not that good, even for the time, not bad but not great.

it's nice that they got there act together for 8 and more so 9.

Haters gonna hate. I will admit that it is one of my favorite, if not THE favorite game of mine because it was the first Final Fantasy I played and one of the first RPGs I had ever played. Only one I played before that was Super Mario RPG for SNES.

The fact that someone made an 8 minute long video (that really had no point really) just to try and bash a game that is loved by millions all over the world is pretty stupid. I bash Halo all the time but mostly just for fun and I never make it personal. I understand that Halo was a lot of peoples first hardcore game experience when they got their Xbox.

So seriously, let the Final Fantasy fans (like myself) enjoy the game series that we have grow up to love and will probably buy until Squeenix goes out of business or stops making the game. You don't have to play it.

To my fellow Final Fantasy fans, don't try and defend it. You like the game because you could relate to the characters on a different level than someone else. I loved Final Fantasy VIII because I was 13 when it came out, a loner and could seriously get into Squall's shoes and feel what he felt in school. Sure it was a badass school where you learned to use a Gunblade, Magic and Summon Monsters to help you but that is why we play the game in the first place.

Live and let live, and meanwhile, just let threads like these rot in the recesses of the internet.

Oh hey look, a topic designed to get the thread badge. Nice choice! FF7 bashing is a surefire way to get thread posts. Sadly, most haters these days are too young to have played it at release in the days of pre-internet without net whining taint and when it held up.

I loved FF7 and I still do. It hasn't aged at all to me: its still a great game with great re-playability value. Unfortunately its design choices sadly tainted future games in its series as the heads decided that its success was due to weather related names, effeminate male villains and bad hairstyles.

And not.. y'know, a good story, great pacing, fun gameplay, a great magic system and great music.

I can't believe FF7 is still being simultaneously made out to be the Jesus and Satan of JRPG's to this day.
Pretty much this. Just let it go, it was good for the late 90's. It really doesn't ever need to be mentioned again, it created the general JRPG hero archetype, done. Let's move on.

I'm gonna respond to the post that probably made this topic, I never NEVER forgot about FF IX, that game was fucking fantastic. Excellent. Top two. Yes, I do like FF VII best. The point is, they were 15 years ago.

i honestly loved VII the most till IX came out....ive been playing since the first one, and IX kinda took me back a bit....after X (even though i really enjoyed it) and X-2....i just lost intrest really.........and i know i'm gonna have some haters (sorry but FF8 sucked...well didnt totally suck, but really found myself falling asleep through the game)....to this day? FFIX is the best one by far in my own opinion

I wasn't too young to haven't played it, and when I looked on the net all I found was fan boy's and that made me want to play it and it wasn't that good. in fact from what you say it sounds like you imply that it's only good if seen in nostalgia.

Nah wasn't my intention to imply that.

When I mention internet whiners I pretty much mean biased vocal viewpoints either way. Fandoms and hatedoms that arise form the fandoms. if you know what I mean.

Do you mean you can be over hyped or have a tainted view on a subject? kinda leading to disappointment in both cases?

FF7 was good, but my experience with RPG's is limited. In terms of FF I've only ever played seven and eight, and eight killed my intrest in the series until the most recent one. I'm tempted to go back though, but that would require a working copy of eight, or a emulator simply because I was fairly young at the time, and didn't get half the mechincs. Other RPG's, well I certaintly haven't played any of the other legendry ones, so yeah, I'm not going to able to judge fairly. However...

FF7 was a damned good game at the time of it's release. The story was intresting, the graphics good apart from the character models (and even then, you weren't paying attention to them half the time) and the characters where some of the best. Certainly much better then they are now (looking at you, entire cast of thirteen apart from sazhs). All my personal opininon mind, and I'm sure there are better, but unless someone wants to show me a emulator or lend me their copy...

I will say this though. In terms of rose tinted specs, Fallout 1 and 2 are the worst cuprits. I seriously don't understand why the damned game recives so much love now, and why Fallout 3 is considered worse then them. They where buggy then, the gameplay was beyond confusing and people wanted Fallout 3 to be like that? There is fondness for an old game, then sheer fanatism.

Almost every time I see a post on why someone doesn't think FF7 is all that great the first thing they say is that the graphics didn't age well. Sadly they're probably some of the first people to defend a modern game for not having great graphics...

I personally think the story was great. It was unique. I was shocked a lot of times by it the first time I played it.

The materia system is still one of the most creative magic systems of all time.

It seems that most FF7 criticism lies in people not liking older graphics and the fact that THEY didn't like aspects of the story.

My favorite FF was 9; an underappreciated gem indeed, with far better scripting and characterisation than FF7 ever had.
Agreed. Good to see someone else have that opinion
