Well E3 has come and past, and the one series that could have truly reformed itself this year has chosen to stick with the same broken gameplay formula that plauges all the games in it's francise. No I am not talking about any Madden or wrestilng game, as those are less broken than dated. I am of course reffering to the next installment of Final Fantasy, or The Adventures of the Increasingly Androgynous Adolescents with Stupid Hair and Terrible Combat Mechanics. Okay so maybe they aren't quite so androgynous as before, but that doesn't excuse or fix the fact that the combat in the game is still like playing virtual chess while taking hallucinogens. Anyone who read my thread "What Do You Want from E3" would know that the only reason I even bothered paying attention to Final Fantasy 13 this time around is that they said on the G4 website that this one was supposed to incorporate real time combat in some manner. Well it did, sort of, but the way it did so merely teased me by showing the characters prancing about in real time while the actual gameplay was still locked in FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS AGO. Listen people, the stories presented by Square Enix alright, but so long as the combat will remain turnbased on anything other than a handheld system, I will have as much respect for it as grown man pretending to be a snail (who doesn't have some manner of tragic mental illness). By the way, don't write me off as just some idiot twitch gamer who can't appreciate good story telling. As an example, I consider GTA4 to be the best so far, because Niko Bellic and many of the other characters of the game happen to be the most human characters in any of the games so far. It is just that I like games that actually have gameplay and not just menu, after menu, after menu.

Edit: Okay people I know that no one is forcing me to play FF13, but I can still rant on it can't I? I see dozens of rants on other popular games like Halo 3, or... actually that is the only one I can think of. None the less, I never see anyone tell them off about it, aside from fanboys of course but they complain even if you don't think it is the gaming equivalent of the Sistine Chapel. My point is can't I not like something and be able to say it. Also to appease a certain escapist (you know who you are) I didn't make other paragraphs because I pretty much stayed on the same topic the whole time.

P.S. I don't know what people on this site call themselves, or what one would call a person replying to a thread, so I just went with the term "Escapist".

Are they still turn-based?

Don't make fun of me, I haven't played any of them sense the second.

This was more of a rant than anything else, your post leaves me with an "Yeah, what do want me to do about it?". As long as S-E get money out of a franchise, they will keep on running it.

I like the Final Fantasy series anyway, this one looks awesome.

So you've tried the new combat for FF13?
P.S.
GTA4 was a major downgrade from San Andreas and the multiplayer blew.

Good gameplay does not have to mean real time or realistic in the slightest. Turn based is fun for being turn based, if you dont like that you are in the wrong genre.

Oh and GTA4 was the biggest let down of this generation.

To each his own. And turn based games require strategy. Some of us like "chess on hallucinogens" as you put it.

I thought the same thing. Actually I didn't like the multiplayer in San Andreas much either.

You don't like turn based combat..ok...so don't play it. Turn based combat IS NOT BAD GAMEPLAY, it is a DIFFERENT gameplay style that some like and some don't. Quite frankly I like the combat, it's a weird mix between real time and turn based and allows for some fluid combat without too much hassle that can come with real time.

It's funny though, when square tried real time they apparently "failed" as everybody bitched and complained, but they still complain when they do turn based. this just goes to show you how indecisive the fans can be and they are never satisfied. The only time Square has done real time and not get flamed for it was Crisis Core, but then again that was modeled very closely to Kingdom hearts.

Yay, let's all pass judgment on games we haven't even played.

My PS2 died 2 days after I bought FF13.

I think that was God telling me NOT TO PLAY IT

What?
I assumed she meant FF12.
Thats why I quoted...but anyway.

To stay in topic.

1) OP use paragraphs it doesn't hurt.

2)If you don't like Turn Base no one is forcing to play games with turn base so...whats your problem?

GTA4 was the worst of the 3d GTA games... That series had been going down hill since Vice City.

And if you don't like turn based combat that?s fine, but don't write it off as "terrible mechanics" or "sucky". Plus, there have been changes in the formula throughout the final fantasy games, sure it still uses the same principles but so does every genre...

Jaja sorry I meant 12. But I meant that this is the official point of me giving up on Final Fantasy games. I just can't take their abuse anymore D=

That is actually part of why I didn't bash it, I didn't get to see the game in action (FF14 that is) so I can't really say anything on the gameplay.

Worse than turn-based combat? That moronic 'beams of light used to designate targets' system from god-knows-which FF game.

I stopped playing RPGs after I beat Chrono Trigger. According to the genre name, you should be playing a role in these games, not playing through exceedingly boring encounters in order to watch terrible storylines unfold.
I guess I just don't like the series as a whole, but that's an entirely separate issue.

i see nothing wrong with turn based combat, some may find it boring but it doesn't mean it's outdated no more than any other gameplay style.it works for the series and that's what it is known for so why change?
