I was discussing with a friend about favorite RPG's when we got into an arguement about final fantasy 7.

Me, I have played 1-6 (and none other) and I have to say that FF6 is my favorite final fantasy. (It was entitled as FF3 for the snes but i own the actual FF3 for DS)

I have seen the graphics for FF7 and even watched the game played by my cousin and I think it was fucking ugly compared to FF6 graphics. (woohoo really bad 3D)

I read the overview of the story on wikipedia and i still don't see what is so great about it.

(I've never owned a play station but I plan on buying a PS2 not a PS3)

You judged it based it on graphics and someone playing it, and then read a plot summery?
I tend to judge my games based on the gameplay experience.

I liked all the Final Fantasy games up until 9 that one just didn't work for me (Literally I got to an early boss and the fight would freeze but look like it was working so I quit it never to play again) but I think they were all great. I don't care about graphics which is a plus

Alright, I'll just say that graphically it was lacking. But so were all PS1 games at the time of its release. The thing about Final Fantasy games is not to be super pretty though, but it helps. Final Fantasy is supposed to be just that, a fantasy. It's suppose to have a good story and plot development. I thought the emotional experience of playing FF7 was well worth the game itself, it was great in that regard. And I kind of liked the battle system and music as well. So these elements made it a great game, and I could overlook the graphics (except for the backgrounds which were just gorgeous).

You'll probably get a no from most people here.

It's a great FF, but it ain't my favorite. Don't judge the game by the graphics, or you'll miss some gems out there.

Obvious troll is obvious.
He ain't saying "It sucks balls" yet.
But they have got very close to it.

OT: Judge the game on gameplay, like D4zZ said. If I judged games on graphics and other people playing them in front of me, my game collection would consist of 4 games.

You know, I'll probably be killed for this, but...

No. No it isn't.

The plot is ridiculous, the characters sans Tifa and Cloud don't get very developed, and the one thing everyone remembers about this game is Aeris dying (emotional moment) and Sephrioth (who was cool). You want a good FF game in all regards? Play FF6. This game was "revolutionary", from what I hear. If it ever was, the revolution has past; it's time to move on.

Pretty much this. Also, it's 3D on the PSOne. Virtually all PSOne games look bad today, especially to those who were too young to play them when they first came out. Take for example, Gran Turismo II. When it came out, it was photo realistic in many people's eyes, but compared to today, it'd pretty shite.

Sort of the same thing with FFVII. When I first played it when it was released, I was blown away. I couldn't believe that they could make something so graphically amazing in a video game. Now it looks like crap, sure, but in my nostalgic eyes, it's still amazing, even when I look at it today.

I Still think the game is great, and one of the best I've ever played. The story is fairly deep and complex (which you wont get out of a summary). The dialogue was cheesy at times, but the overall emotion of the characters shone through.

So yes, it really was that great.

EDIT: I cannot believe I forgot the music! The music was breathtaking. I had those melodies stuck in my head for years. They still pop in to my consciousness from time to time.

Don't forget story. FF wouldn't be popular just because of gameplay....In fact, it wouldn't probably be alive today.

Reading a quick plot summary is not going to give you any idea of what it is like to actually play the game. I say, give it a chance. You will likely get used to the graphics within an hour or so, and the story is surprisingly immersive, as is the feeling of exploration as you progress. It is definitely one of the best games out there.

I should note, however, that MY favorite FF game is Final Fantasy IX. Great graphics, a decent story and a more lighthearted style than other FFs. If you liked VI, I think you should consider setting your sights on IX rather than VII, especially since IX was made as a one - off throwback to the series' beginnings - a more medieval style with vast, green forests and ancient castles, rather than the increasingly futuristic settings they normally go for.

This also means that FF IX is littered with in-jokes noticeable only to people who have played FF I - VI. That, I understand, means YOU!

Seriously. Check it out!

This is what i've been looking for not some fanboy who pauses when they read or hear ff7 to get to their knees and wrap their lips around a game.
nice persuasive writing btw

FF VII was the first one i every played and it blew me away. It wasn't just my first Final Fantasy game, it was my first RPG ever so i can't help but put it up on a pedestal for those things
