It helped sony become dominant at that time. It popularized rpgs for the west. But it gets/got a lot of hype so it kind of suffers from Halo syndrome. Some people REALLY like it which turns other people off right away and sets the bar really high. Especially when people try to play it after all these years. If you dont like rpgs and jrpgs specifically, you probably wont like ffvii. I played it immediately after it came out and i enjoyed it quite well. You also wont enjoy it if you are the kind of person who dislikes things because other people like it so fervently. If you like the genre... you should like ffvii, that is if you can get past the fact it was made in the late 90's.... you know, like a fucking decade ago.

What i'm looking for are persuasive comments that would convince me to give it a try.

/Arcane Shot

in my opinion, FFVII is a great RPG.
not a great GAME, but a great RPG.
maybe it's just me, but i always get attatched to characters.
so when they die, i feel bad.
i'm just saying that FFVII is one of the greatest RPG's i've played.
... Next to Mass Effect.

FFVII is probably the RPG that people into RPG's I think it's a great game to be honest, I haven't played 6 but I hear from my friends who have that it's an amazing game. I Personally enjoyed tactics more than 7 way back on the ps1.

Yes it is that good and you should be kicked in the balls for even questioning its perfection. That's the same as asking if sex is really that great.
Let me take a wild guess. You are a Fanboy aren't you.
A fair assumption. I've signed dozens of petitions to have this game remade with all the voice actors from Advent Children but I realize developers would likely change too much that made the game as fun as it was in the days of 90's rendering so I'm content with FF7 as it stands; one of the top selling games in the history of mankind.

And yes, Barret was my favorite character too. And I have never ONCE named Cait Sith by his proper name, I usually go with Gay ***** or Reeve to totally fuck up the illusion that he wasn't a Shin'ra Operative.

And while we're on the subject, what ever happened to overworld maps?! Am I just playing the wrong games, or did we somehow "grow out" of whooping our way over the world in flying death traps?

It was great but not by today's standards. It was a benchmark game for console rpgs. You look at an rpg today and compare it to FF7 you will see alot of similarities. 60+ hours of gameplay (and not 55 hours of grinding). All the minigames in the casino. A story that consisted more than just a big baddie gonna destroy the world and kidnap helpless princesses. That is all "the norm" today but back then it was unheard of.

I'll be straight with you, OP: You've played Final Fantasy I-VI and liked them. Therefore, you'll love VII, because it expands and improves everything that the previous six established. You're going to love it. It's a given. There isn't a single Final Fantasy fan who can honestly say they didn't enjoy VII.

The question is this: Are you going to be honest with yourself and admit that you liked a popular game? Or are you going to jump on the bandwagon and say it was "overrated" even though you loved it, like about 60% of the Final Fantasy fanbase?

When it came out, I loved the story & characters, but I had always found the graphics to be fugly. Back then, I wanted to be a cell animator & was deathly opposed to 3D animation, now they just look polygonal & dated & my resentment for 3D has narrowed itself to just Pixar & Disney.

Let's put it this way: It was great at the time it came out.

If you haven't played it then chances are that you'll be disappointed because it's been lifted into idol heaven. But if you're able to see past the legions of fanboys, you can enjoy it very much.

I was discussing with a friend about favorite RPG's when we got into an arguement about final fantasy 7.

Me, I have played 1-6 (and none other) and I have to say that FF6 is my favorite final fantasy. (It was entitled as FF3 for the snes but i own the actual FF3 for DS)

I have seen the graphics for FF7 and even watched the game played by my cousin and I think it was fucking ugly compared to FF6 graphics. (woohoo really bad 3D)

I read the overview of the story on wikipedia and i still don't see what is so great about it.

(I've never owned a play station but I plan on buying a PS2 not a PS3)
Seriously, just let this topic die. Next to Halo fanboys trying to defend Halo 3 (or any other in that series of extremely generic first person shooters), this has got to be one of the most overdone... Just... stop it.. please? :(
Go pet a kitten or something.
It's not the best game ever, but it did alot of things that other RPG's weren't doing at that time. It's dated sure, but it's still a classic.
I myself must have restarted and finished that game like 20 times.

Crimson: If you're looking for a reason to play it, consider that it helped Sony win the console war of that generation for a reason.

It's buggy in places, sure, but still _fun_, and if you like RPGs, and Final Fantasy games in particular, then you'll like FFVII because it's more of the same. In tone it's closest to Final Fantasy VIII.

Was FFVII a great game when it was released? Yes.

Is it as good it was back then? No.

Is it still good? Yes.

Is this worth arguing at all? Of course not.
You sir, win the thread. Couldn't have put it better myself.
Awesome when it came out, hasn't aged well, but is still a classic.

It was good enough that it made me buy the other FF7 compilation games.
But still, theres better FF games out there.
FF6 & FF9 being two of them.
