For one, there's plenty of emotional and intellectual involvement, but that's true of most FFs or RPGs in general. I think to understand fully why FF7 is great is to see it in context. Its one of the first games that actually had a, though polygonal, 3D environment and design (at least a bit). One of the first with a turn-based system too. And most of the characters are simply complex and there's a strong variety, which is always a hallmark of a Classic Game.

FF VII was a revolutionary game and almost single-handedly won the platform wars for Sony in the 32 bit era. It was a massive coup for them at the time, as Square-Enix (then Squaresoft) was Nintendo's baby.

A deep story, excellent characters, great villains, and even some humor mixed in.

That being said... VI is still my favorite from the series, followed by X.

For all those areas in which FFVII was great, aside from the graphics and music, FFVI excelled. The characters and plot I felt were much, much deeper.

For instance, while Aerith's death in VII was indeed a very moving and memorable moment, one of the richest in the history of game-play, Cid's death in VI was equally so, especially the clear anguish it caused Celes, so much that she threw herself off a cliff. We never really got to see what kind of affect Aerith's death had on Cloud until Advent Children, as after the scene where her body is laid to rest in the pool, there's no expression of grief and little to no dialogue about it.

The opera from VI very nearly moved me to tears.

So yeah, both phenomenal games in their own right, but I carried VI with me afterwards a lot longer than VII.

XII isn't a "bad" game, per-say, but I think so many people latched onto Cloud's hair and Aerith's story that they see/saw the game through rose-colored glasses.

Personally, from an "in MYYYY day" standpoint, I prefer IV and VI to VII--I had played FF I (on ye olde 8-Bit) as a kid, but I had much more fun playing IV and VI on SNES as a teen and had gone so far as buying them when they were re-issued years later. I honestly have NOT liked most of the games very much since VII, the game play just bored me up until XII (but I think mainly to the random encounters being eliminated and the new fighting/gambit system).

Tactics, though, stole my heart in a way that it could never love another...

Are you crazy? Aerith's Death was his main motivation for most of the game; felt responsible and wanted to change everything that led up to that event. It wasn't said out loud, didn't have to be.

Do you mean, FFII in the US (FFIV) or the actual FFII?

I agree with you on six about the opera and cid's final scene. I replayed six no telling how many times, the snes and GBA version.

Just started playing it today, and so far I'm liking it. I'm not sure if it's the best, as I haven't played any of the others, but it seems pretty damn good. Also, why are you judging a twelve year old game by its graphics? That's just plain stupid.

No I compared it to FF6 which came out on the snes before it.

I think it is. It's one of my favourite games of all times, and I've played pretty much all the Final Fantasys (maybe missed a few early ones).

It's the only Final Fantasy I've actually finished, and I play all of them (I own every game from VII onwards, and I've had owned the earlier ones if I could find an anthology or something).

So yes, it is really that great.

It's just... fun

It popularized RPG's in the Western World, Brought millions of gamers together to cherish it, and told an epic adventure with unique characters.

That's pretty damn good.

I just think FF VII goe too slow, I've played it twice and I haven't gotten off the first disc... o i think that it IS great, just not THAT great. I liked VI more, but probably because the story moved faster, and the World of Ruin didn't have a story per se, but just said 'explore'.

I never got into it, but I don't really like RPG's as a whole (with the exception of Paper Mario, because I always buy anything with that wonderful fat bastards mug on it.) Have fun being a troll and stuff.

Yes it is that good and you should be kicked in the balls for even questioning its perfection. That's the same as asking if sex is really that great.

It's very subjective, and also based hugely on how much hype your heard about it.

I played it having heard very little hype, and once I got past the graphical limitations (I played it post IX, so I was used to much better 3d by now), I found it to be immersive and a very well written storyline which sucked me in despite the occasional moments of story breaking idiocy.
