http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-06-final-fantasy-10-hd-remake-for-vita-and-ps3-is-a-remaster

Dare I say it? The Final Fantasy fan base is infamous for wanting a Final Fantasy VII remake. But Squeenix just blew every piece of common sense out of the water after announcing a Final Fantasy X remastering.

I think it's safe to say that nobody saw that coming. I wasn't particularly aware that anybody wanted one, or that it even needed one in the first place. I don't know about you, but FFX doesn't look THAT dated at the moment...

So what do you think Escapists? Outraged that they're remaking a game that doesn't need to be remade? Or just plain outraged that they got the memo about what the fans would shell out for, read about half of what was on it, and misread VII as X.

Or are you for some reason, pleased. You crazy fucker.

A regular FFX re-release would have been fine, but I'm not going to quibble over an HD remake. I liked FFX. It's one of my top 5 FF games. They've already stated that a FFVII HD remake would cost too much, and I tend to agree. It's not just a graphics update like some people think, they'd have to pretty much remake the entire game. Why do that when you can just make a new game?

HD remaking a ps1 game is near impossible if not very fucking costly , i though people has be through this already. As for the FFX remake , i guess it makes sense considering it's the only FF game on the ps2 . But still i won't buy it since i have the original and the graphics are pretty good actually .Not that i care about graphics anyways.

Because people want it? They won't need to redesign the game or rewrite the script, that would save alot of money I would imagine.

It's really kind of stupid of them to ignore their fans.

Actually there were like 3 FF games on PS2..

OT: FFX is the only Final Fantasy game I actually got relatively far in, all the others ones made no sense to me.

It's no more costly than making a new game and they have made plenty of those this gen.

No, no it isn't stupid. They believe that costs would outweigh the benefits of the remake. They've said as much in interviews.

They are probably saying that because they don't want to do it. I want someone to tell me how remaking a game that doesn't need to be redesigned or rewritten would cost more than a new game?

How much did Final Fantasy XIII cost to make? I can tell you that a remake of Final Fantasy VII would be better received than that game was. Also, mark my words, when SE gets desperate they will remake it and prove that it could have been done all along.

I have the best response to this.

OT: I liked X, mainly because it's the only FF I've played. It wasn't bad... Cept for the above. I had this scene behind my parents, as they were watching the news. T'was awkward to say the least.

I'd be all over this, if it weren't going to be PS3 only. I don't have that console, and am certainly not going to buy it for one game. But if FFX-HD got a PC release, I'd pre-order whatever super special edition they decided to put together, as I unashamedly love that game.

Hey, folks?

IT"S NOT A REMAKE.

Your righteous indignation is cute and all, but it's just an HD remastering, they admitted as much. I know that some people will take any chance they get to bag on Squeenix, but seriously? Do your homework.

Have you ever stopped and compared the size of FFVII to FFXIII? How many more areas there are. How much larger the list of enemies is. The weapon models. The NPCs. Now translate that into having to make a new model for every single enemy and NPC. Having to design and make all of the environments. Having to animate all of the character actions. Remaking all of the cutscenes. We're not talking about just throwing on a new coat of paint here.

Have you compared the number of areas and enemies?

So are you really saying that remaking Final Fantasy VII would be more expensive than Final Fantasy XIII?

Also, isn't it interesting that PS1 games are bigger than PS3 games? Let's also keep in mind that Final Fantasy III and IV received complete remakes, from the ground up. Final Fantasy VII wouldn't be going from 2D to 3D.

7 has about 40 more enemies than 13, and about double the unique locations. The cast of plot relevant NPCs isn't even comparable.

Do you think there is a SE game from this gen that had 40 more enemies than 13 and twice as many unique areas? The Last Remnant maybe, Star Ocean 4? Square Enix is no small company and for them to say that it would be too expensive is just not believable. Not only do they have the resources but they have been told for years that people will buy it.

Also, isn't it embarrassing for them that games from 2 generations ago, made with a much smaller staff, are bigger than their multimillion dollar productions today.

I don't know, is there a current gen game with around 200 unique enemy models and around 50-60 unique areas? I don't believe so. And there's a reason for that. Graphics are expensive as fuck and have become the main focus in recent years.

And yes, it is embarrassing that I can go back to the PS1/Gamecube era or earlier and find games with tons of unique models and areas, but nowadays you're lucky to find a couple dozen models and a handful of areas. Developers are more concerned with making pretty graphics than variety nowadays. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles are a huge breath of fresh air. The variety of enemies and areas is staggering compared to other games that have been released lately. And yet it still reuses models heavily, especially for equipment, though i can forgive that, considering there's only so much you can do without getting overly ridiculous.

Well, the longer they wait, the more impressive a remake will have to look.
