The combat looks to be leaning towards "Real Time Flow with Turn Based Menu Commands"

My guess is that you don't "move" the characters, you modify their stats and enter commands.

We'll see though, hopefully it's less "Build and Go" than FFXII's combat was but we'll see.

That's what I assumed by watching the trailer =/

It looks ok, but I do wish for a better result.

Is the main characters name really "Lightning" ?

It sounds like they asked a 5 year old to pick a name for the character
It'sw not her REAL name, it's her code name or nick name. Her real name is supposedly revealed later on in the story.

Ah ok. I guess it really isn't that odd of a name considering past characters were named 'Cloud' and 'Squall'. There's even a character named 'Snow' in this new one. Square has a thing for the elements.
I'd laugh if they revealed her real name to be some other element lol. I wouldn't put it past Squenix as much as i love Final Fantasy.

they should have made the combat more like Xenogears
Everyone should do everything more like Xenogears.
I really could do without some of the really, really, really insane hard Gear battles that Xenogears had.

While I am enjoying FF12 (still playing through it... slowly) I feel they missed on the combat so much. I hope they actually let you PLAY and engage in the battles like they used to. What was so wrong with ATB that they had to change it?

The Escapist is not that big a part of my life. i still dont care.
I dont think getting you to care is what they are trying to do. They are just informing you of the rules. If you dont care, just realize you are probably going to get reported.

Oh, and no, you dont make the game look bad by using poor grammar and spelling. You make the people who like the game look bad.

Final Fantasy VII certainly didn't look very "Final Fantasy-ish" and look what happened there.

This looks visually & thematically amazing but the combat system is clearly going to be atrocious.
Second.

I like the visual style, It gives a good contrast to the last game, but the combat looks to be a little dodgy.
Lmao, so because of me, you look down upon those who like the game? Thats just as bad. I really dont care for the game. I didnt know i had such a large influence on people.

As they say, a society can be defined by the people in it. We are a society of gamers, and when the ones who like a particular game act stupid it reflects poorly upon the others who like that game. Kind of like the Halo situation. Some Halo players are frothing at the mouth trying to get their next kill (or are screamers or numerous other things). So it is only natural for us to make that assumption of the rest of their community. That is what you do to those in the community who like FFXII

Also, no I dont look down upon those who like the game, that would insinuate that I am not one of those people. Instead, you make me feel stupid for liking the same game(s) you do. I'm not saying you have poor taste, but when you type and organize your thoughts in that way its hard to tell otherwise.

I didn't click the link but, is it Final Fantasy in the style of XIII or the other way around?

If so, I am going to buy this game instantly
Wow, you just gave me a really good concept for a game. Too bad it's not XIII in any way shape or form, but...

Your sarcasm was not lost on me, sir.

Anyway, I don't know what to think about this. I don't have a NEXTGEN CONCSOLE so I guess it doesn't matter. But by the time it comes out my friends won't give a damn and they'll just let me borrow it and their PS3 or something.

I am now very interested in this. The gameplay looks really fun. But of course, it's Final Fantasy so people are going to find things to whine about.

In an interview I read regarding the gameplay, Wada (I think it was Wada) said they were going for an Advent Children style combat system. Meaning that they tried to make a turn based system that resembled that project. It looks as though the gameplay is getting there as far as intensity is concerned, my only problem with it is how the heck will it be handled? The trailer clearly indicates that you control a group of atleast 3, and you obviously fight as both Lightning and Snow, so do the actions become cued up between characters? Do you switch between characters a la Star Ocean 3? I'd like Square to clarify this stuff in the future and not just say 'Yeah our combat looks awesome.'

The storyline (from Famitsu scan translations on other boards) sounds pretty darn cool. It's a tale of class struggle and nationalism that I haven't seen in a Final Fantasy game before. The story reminds me of Battle Angel Alita/GUNNM where a higher up society in the sky (in this case Cacoon) dump their trash and unwanted residents to Pulse, a Junkyard-style area in which is infested by monsters and other ghoulies. Judging from the trailer, I'm guessing this is only showing the opening 20 or so minutes of the game in Cacoon, I'm guessing that it'll start off kind of like Final Fantasy X and then take you to another world (pardon that pun).

Sorry for the theorizing, but when it comes to RPGs I love talking about them. Also it's Seifer.

The trailers hyped FF XII up and what did we get? A slow battle system which was supposed to be something new, a boring story (IMO) and gambits.
-Trailers are designed to hype things up, if you're hyped up for a game, you're willing to buy it. Duh.
-Slow battle system? Turn off the gambits and turn the battle speed to fastest.
-You said the "Boring story" was in your opinion, I thought it was fine, not memorable but I found it more mature than some other Final Fantasies and it wasn't brain-crushingly lame or anything, but I digress...
-Don't like gambits? Turn them off. Here's how: in battle, push the analog stick in a downwards direction, twice. Then press "X". The large golden "G" beside gambits should now be faint and gray. Congratulations, you have successfully turned off gambits.

It probably will be a bit like the FF XII battle system.
In that case my hope for this game is gone, then again i never really played XII
How can you judge a battle system you've never tried?

The battle system in FFXII is more or less exactly the same as any other ATB. The only difference is, now you can tell your allies what to do if you can't be arsed (obviously if someone dies I'm going to want to revive them), and you can move around and do things in actual real-time instead of standing in rows waiting for your ATB bar to fill up. It's honestly not that different. Stop complaining.

From the looks of things combat is done with a filling "action" bar and the various moves use up a portion of the action bar (note the #'s next to the move selections, 1, 1, 3, etc), allowing you to chain together various attacks. If you can pull of new effects with attack chains it should be interesting. I'd also like to switch between characters on the fly- let me tap a button, have trenchcoat guy knock someone into the air, tap a button, have pink hair shoot them while their up there. If not..it's just a fancified ATB.

Not thats there's anything wrong with ATB persay. It pretty much defines FF.

The story looks like it's the typical heavy handed lolwhut? Final Fantasy fare, but they're returning to FF7's cyberpunk so it may not be so bad.

Dear fucking lord HOW MANY ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE????? I don't have ANYTHING against FF series mind you, I thought that number 2 was awesome but... seriously are they STILL going? I played the newer ones and they just felt like broken ripped off games. I admire the fact that they still have a dedicated fanbase, but seriously isn't it enough?

I mean you would never see like Halo 12 or God of War XII

I think the combat system looks combo based from what I've see. Almost like they took prince of persias combat mechanic and instead of having to run at the enemy you put it turn based. Your turn you fire of a combo, their turn they fire of a combo, etc etc.

Actually that sounds like he hell of a lot of fun to me (if they keep the combo's varied and growing)
