I've been having some fun playing FF 13 over the last day.

I love the combat, the feel and the sense of place. But one thing that really struck me:

What's up with some of the gestures and 'Japanese' manners?

People are basically insane, I often had a lot of problems to even understand what they were talking about. It's so damn cryptic! The only one that made any sense was Sazh, he seemed to be asking questions and actually using common sense from time to time. It's almost like he represented all the Westeners that didn't know what the hell was going on and was responding to some of the crazy stuff: "...even the fire is crystalized- this is ridiculous!"

When Vanille (I'm having a hard time with the names aswell hahaha) talked to the boy and then loudly proclaimed "Ciao!" upon leaving, I literally burst out in laughter.

What were your first impressions? Can you relate to the characters? Is it as strange to you as it is to me?

Wow...A Japanese game with Japanese mannerisms.

*dies of shock*

I hate Hope. I like everyone but Hope. 9 hours in...I hate Hope. I hope Hope dies.

Spoiler: He doesn't
Well, I'll just let him die in battle a ton.

I'll have party leader be the team medic, and I won't ever heal him.

His name is certainly the worst of the bunch...

I know it's Japanese but that has never really stopped me from enjoying the old FFs. Maybe because this one has more voice-overs or maybe because I didn't pay too much attention back then. I still think this is the most extreme FF game in terms of the gestures and such and I've only seen a few hours of it.

The real question here: Hope and Vanille? Eh? Eh?

I don't want to hate vanille, but I kind of do. Hope is an asshole.

Sazh is my favorite character by far, aided by his badass little chicobo.

*shudder* I remember that part.

Did you read the description of his little chocobo? It went something like "No one knows what its called, possibly because uttering it's true name would cause earthquakes and hurricanes across the world, destroying everything!....or maybe Sazh just hasn't come up with a name yet."
I'm lovin Sazh more and more every cutscene.

The mannerisms I don't mind much. It's the terrible quality in some of the scenes that really piss me off. Remember when Snow was trying to talk and smile at the same time? *shivers*

And what's with all the hate on Hope? He's my second favorite character! I mean, yes, he's a little dick. But that's the point isn't it? I understand him completely, how he feels, why he feels it. To me, he's almost as normal as Sazh, if a little cry-baby-ish, but I expected that to be Vanille, and it's nice to be pleasantly surprised once in a while.
I just hope Vanille dies in the near future. Seriously, I can only take so much bad voice acting.

I know I can't be the only one not thinking of it as Chocobo Chick and more as ChocoBOO! I'm just waiting for the battle cry.

Well I'm just about 3 hours into it and it seems that Hope and Vanelle are going to be the Vaan and Penelo of the game...

I'm liking how everyone else is so far though. Lightning and Snow have interesting stories/characters and Sazh is just awesome. It helps that they were introduced with/before the other two mentioned beforehand so my enjoyment of the game so far has only been slightly hindered by those two.

Sazh is the most entertaining character by far,
Hope is really annoying and I also don't like him at all.
Lightening is basically Cloud Strife with a Vagina so far
Snow seems okay so far, no complaints
Vanille, her voice is strange. She seems to wander into British from time to time, but it doesn't stick. Its strange.

I hate Hope too, but unlike the most of you I also dislike Sazh. The rest are cool enough to hang with me. Also I completely agree with the gestures being really overdone at times. Not too far in atm though, only have had time to play for like three hours, so I guess it's a bit early to speak for or against the game.

Sazh is just a classic American comic relief character in my eyes, if anyone was wondering why I don't like him.

What is your avatar from? Also on topic, I LOVE Sazh and his Chocobo chick in his hair, SO funny! Also Lightning is a total ***** and Snow lets her do too much to him (her being Lightning)

Sazh is the man. Funny, but still with moments of seriousness.

Lightning is too much like Cloud for me to like her yet.

Vanille's character TYPE doesn't bother me, but her voice (and the shifting accent) does, and I'm kind of disturbed by how sexualized she is (swaying those hips when she walks, oh baby) and then so juvenile.

Hope... I don't actually mind him so much yet; kid has reason to be emo.

I'm torn on Snow. On the one hand, I want to smack him every time he's all I'M THE HERO SO WE'rE GONNA SAVE STUFF 'CUZ I'M THE HERO but on the other he has some genuinely endearing moments of dorkiness. I don't dislike him nearly as much as I thought I would.

Watching Vanille do any sort of body movement is catalyst to a fit of laughter on my part.

I wonder if that is how the japanese think a girl should move in real life...

This is why I prefer fansubbed anime, because the subber will frequently add footnotes to explain Japanese idioms and cultural inside jokes.

Unfortunately, video games cannot be fansubbed, and apparently the original Japanese voice track is not an option. But I hear the English voice acting isn't very bad (except for Vanille).

I'm with you there mostly, but lightning feels far more Ashe to me than Cloud. She's goal-driven, hardened and cold.

I honestly like Snow quite a lot, he's Tidus but les obnoxious, and with a hint more Zidane.

Vanille fails me as a character one virtually every level. I hate the juvenille, flighty, airheaded, "we're in mortal danger, but I don't care, OHH LOOK SHINY!" character type, and her run animation makes me want to find her animator and slap him.
