Completely agree here. The sexualization was disturbing. I know every FF has the traditional 'enthusiastic girl' types and I usually don't mind them, but Vanille was stretching it a bit. The way she clung on to hope eh...Hope and when she was at the part of showing of her tattoo...oh boy, oh boy.

Watching Vanille do any sort of body movement is catalyst to a fit of laughter on my part.

I wonder if that is how the japanese think a girl should move in real life...
I hope little girls don't emulate that kind of behaviour, but I'm pretty sure they'll do to a certain degree. The joints would pretty much be eroded after a year of skipping like that...

I'm guessing it's from Werner Herzog's Aguirre: The Wrath of God, that one part where all the random monkeys show up?
Yep.

Sazh is the man. Funny, but still with moments of seriousness.

Lightning is too much like Cloud for me to like her yet.

Vanille's character TYPE doesn't bother me, but her voice (and the shifting accent) does, and I'm kind of disturbed by how sexualized she is (swaying those hips when she walks, oh baby) and then so juvenile.

Hope... I don't actually mind him so much yet; kid has reason to be emo.

I'm torn on Snow. On the one hand, I want to smack him every time he's all I'M THE HERO SO WE'rE GONNA SAVE STUFF 'CUZ I'M THE HERO but on the other he has some genuinely endearing moments of dorkiness. I don't dislike him nearly as much as I thought I would.
I'm with you there mostly, but lightning feels far more Ashe to me than Cloud. She's goal-driven, hardened and cold.

I honestly like Snow quite a lot, he's Tidus but les obnoxious, and with a hint more Zidane.

Vanille fails me as a character one virtually every level. I hate the juvenille, flighty, airheaded, "we're in mortal danger, but I don't care, OHH LOOK SHINY!" character type, and her run animation makes me want to find her animator and slap him.

-m
Agreed 100% on Vanille - I didn't mind the character type so much in the form of Rikku, because she at least seemed the type who understood when things were serious. Vanille just rubs me the wrong way and I am right there with you on her run animation.

I definitely see the Tidus in Snow, and that's fine by me since I actually really liked Tidus. It's mainly his constant proclamation of himself as a hero that does it for me.

It's Lightning's harshness that gives off more of a Cloud vibe to me than an Ashe; but to be fair I didn't finish 12 so I'm not as familiar with Ms. Dalmasca as I am Mr. Eiffel Tower Hair.

I'm only 4 or so hours in, though, so this could easily change.

Lightning is worse than Cloud as far as personality. Cloud was crass but atleast he had some cocky swagger to back it up, Lightning is just cold and bitchy.
Anyway, there's none of the characters I really dislike, though Hope being such a whiner to start got on my nerves, but at the point I'm at he's starting to grow a pair.

My main issues with the game currently are:

1. How the party keeps getting broken up and rearranged. I don't like that I'm not being allowed to use the party that I actually want to use. I get that its for the sake of the story progression. Yes most of them have done this at one point or another, you lose someone or your party breaks off for a dungeon or a couple hours.. but this has been going on since minute one.

2. The linearity of it all. Every place you go is a zigzagging line connecting point A to point B. What happened to those big Final Fantasy worlds and dungeons? Right now I'm going through some animal genetic testing place, atleast that's what Lightning said it was, and its just a big pathway. Buildings aren't made like that. Remember the Shinra building? It had floors and a gym and employees, it felt like a building. Yes everything is pretty but there's no sense of exploration at all. I really hope that changes later and the game starts to open up.

P.S. I think the sexualization of Serah is way creepier than that of Vanille. She's dressed like a slutty schoolgirl, getting married to a guy who's atleast 5 years older than her, and she's like 16 tops.

I enjoy the game very much for where i am at with it and based on the character behaviors i have wished for two things to happen.

1. Hope the annoying schizophrenic twas meets a demise which a Mr. snowplow has said he doesnt so scratch this one.

2. I hope Snow beats the ever-loving shit out of lightning becasue she needs a beating. I mean the guy is trying to save your SISTER for crying out loud and all you'd rather do is have periods and punch people

How is he schizophrenic? Isn't he always just whining and being insecure?

Other than that I am totally with you.

It's characters reacting how one would given the circumstance.

We can all sit here and say "materia? What the fuck?" And imagine that we'd take the piss out of it if we saw it. We look at mannerisms that are foreign to us as though they're the result of the Japanese influence on the game, and rile ourselves as a result.

But, the game should be foreign. I would actually be sad for Japanese players if the mannerisms and mentality of the characters are modeled on the Japanese people, because the game should always feel foreign. There should be enough earthiness to draw us in, but enough distinction to be able to explore another land.

I'm reminded of the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. It's played straight that if magic existed, the world would be wholly different, and people would have entirely different cultures and traditions than we find "normal".

I picked it up at midnight the first day, and have only played it a few hours so far (due to work, homework, and being distracted by a broken computer). Not that it was bad or anything, but the beginning running along with highway or whatever it is really reminds me of the beginning of FFX for some reason.

Ohh that's what's going on, I thought he was just throwing some sort of fit.

Well Im not going to quote anything as pretty much comment is on Hope hate so Ill just throw in my opinion on he matter.

Yes, I too hate Hope, but not because he's a total douche. Thats just his character and Im fine with that. What I DO hate about him is how he always falls to his knees and puts his face on the ground. Fine, be a total douche, but grow some balls kid, honestly.

I don't want to hate vanille, but I kind of do. Hope is an asshole.

Sazh is my favorite character by far, aided by his badass little chicobo.

I haven't played that long, but I kinda like Vanille. She acts so over the top and stupid that it seems like an act and she's just fucking with everyone.

Sazh is okay, but I hope he doesn't have to many "goofy black guy" moments.

Haha.

Vanille...It gets worse later on. Especially towards Sazh and Hope just a warning :p

Hope? You know he may be whiny little ***** but he does toughen up and begins to be a interesting character.

For those that enjoyed most all of the previous games except 12, how does this one hold up? If you had to compare it to another one, which would you choose any why?

The whole thing between Snow and Serah is a bit out there.

It's like Gerald Butler having an relationship with one of the Olsen twins.

I "like" Snow because he's a failure as a hero and I have a feeling that this is going to be a major part of his development as a character.

Hope... yeah, while he is pretty "emo" he's realistic about it and again like with Snow, I have a feeling he'll grow out of it as the story progresses.

Vanille has a terrible, terrible voice that really gets on my nerves and while I understand the "type" of character she's supposed to be I can't say I've ever been fond of that type of character. She does have a very endearing moment with Sazh somewhere around the 6-8 hour mark though, made me feel a little better about her as a character.

Sazh is just plain awesome and is easily the best supporting character Square has ever thrown into a final fantasy game.

Lightning I like despite claims of her being "Female Cloud," once you start seeing a little more of her past and once she starts to open up to the rest of the characters (it seems to me that her coldness is more of a coping mechanism than an out and out character trait). She also has some good interaction with Hope that starts to flesh her out as a more likable character.
