Much like The Dark Knight, Portal was killed by hype. Every single person was talking about it and raving about it and... *shudders*... quoting it that I just got tired of hearing about it altogether. I'm glad I beat it before everyone and their mother started quoting Portal jokes, and I'm sorry that you didn't get to have the same experience that I did.

Either way, Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 are still excellent games and even if Portal didn't do it for you, those games should.
I apprecitate you sympathy. I hate when an amazing game gets ruined by hype. Ever heard of the movie Hypercube? No? Thats the way Portal should have been. A good game, that only the immediate community of gamers knows about. While that may consist of alot of people, at least it would keep alot of people from randomly quoting the damn thing.

Now about TF2, thats strictly online, is it not? I heard it had some silly storyline, but i didnt find it. Is that true?

KILL HIM WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!!

*cough* anyway, I really enjoyed the game, and I don't get you saying you got to level 9 and finished it 2 levels later, since the first half of the game had 20 levels, and then you had the backstage portion of it after that.
I really enjoyed GLaDOS's dialog, and some of the puzzles did stump me for a while. If you want replayability, go download some map packs made by the community, some of them are really top-notch.
As for the companion cube, you are a cold, heartless bastard for not caring about it, didn't you hear it talking, pleading with you to not kill it? It cried so desperately when I finally brought myself to throw it in the fire...
Well mostly because Last time i checked the level selector it had only about 11 levels sir. AND I got it for the 360 sir, so the extra levels are not there for me to play with. Also about the companion cube; I didnt hear it because its survival of the fittest and the damn cube couldn't carry its own weight. Hell it wouldnt even hold the portal gun...
Hmmm... I do believe there was 20 test chambers, but maybe only 11 chapters, not sure on how many chapters. But definitely 20 test chambers and the behind the scenes levels.
And as for the companion cube, no, it never talks, I was being sarcastic about that. You are right, the whole deal about the companion cube has been created solely by the community. And I must say that buying it for the 360 was not a good move, unless there was no way your computer could handle it.
Yeah my comp couldnt handle it due to its nonexistence factor. You might be right about chambers. Do you mean that in separate chapters, there are alot of different rooms with challenges? If so, then yes. Still, the last 3 total were the only challenging ones.

Good cause i didnt hear a damn thing come outta that cube. Also, what are the behind the scenes chapters? Are they on the 360 version too?
I believe the "behind the scenes chapters" are after you escape from the main test chambers and try to find a way to Glados.
Isnt that what you were doing at the entire end of the game?

Ah well See i normally suck with puzzle games, but this seemed much simpler. I admit standing back and looking at a room with turrets and a Power Ball looks confusing. However, alot of short parts were consisting of: Look up, shoot orange portal, then turn to wall shoot portal blue. Walk through, END LEVEL! So i was upset that it wasn't challenging till the end.
Yeah, I think Portal was mostly a test game just to see how the community responded to it. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Portal 2 is gonna be longer.
How can they make a portal two? The facility is destroyed, isnt it? OR was that just GLaDOS pieces everywhere?
They'll fin a way because the fans want it. Personally I don't want a Portal to, but it's not really my decision.

And I'm not surprised you were disappointed. Portal has been hyped to a ridiculous degree. Still, I hope you enjoy TF2 and Half-Life.

Yes, it is strictly online but it does have a plot.

The world is controlled by two large companies, RED and BLU. Whenever there is a problem between these companies that has no bureaucratic solution, they hire mercenaries to steal intelligence, capture territory, and blow shit up. You take control of these mercenaries.

I played it before I even knew about Yahtzee, so I loved it. I always laugh at the dialouge in the Companion Cube, and I think the joke is that GlaDOS told you to not love it, or something. I havn't played in a while.

I knida disagree with you, but you have the point about the lenght relative to the challenge.
Thank you, im glad im not the only one who was upset about that. However the companion cube...Did it talk? If it did i couldnt actually hear it over the machines banging around or GLaDOS telling me to kill it or anything else.
I'm not usre if it talked. All I know that it is a cube, with hearts on it. And I loved it for that. Why? Why GLaDOS? Why must I kill it? *Weeps*
Hahaha. Well If you listen to her, she says that you killed it faster than any other participant. That must mean that they actually heard it talk. Also she says to disregard ANY advice given by the cube. So clearly crazy people came before you

portal has been so hyped it could not have possibly ended up well. Even if you set your expectaions a little lower. I would prefer putting chel into half life 2 episode 3 and just let portal be portal. Or else just realease more and more chalenge maps.
Thats what Im planning on doing. However, i havent played a Half Life game since the early 2k's. I have no idea what Gordon Freemans been up to, so is it a problem that I know NOTHING about the Half Life episodes?
Its not that important to know about the previous Half-Life game. Just make sure to play the episodes in chronological order!
Ahhh. Ok, so what should i know about the previous titles to understand the new game? Other than the main character, what else should i know. Is there an evil corporation? Is there an alien invasion, what?
In Half-Life 1 Gorden was a scientist at a place called Black Mesa. (You are gonna hear BM referenced several times in HL2) At BM a major malfunction happened during a experiment and aliens started to teleport into BM.
BM was soon overrun and Gorden was teleported to the alien's overlord and then Gorden proceeded to kill the overlord. Gorden was then employed by a person only known as the "G-man" and put into stasis. Half-Life 2 begins when Gorden is awakened from Stasis by the G-man.During the years Gorden was in stasis the earth was taken over by the alien race at BM, they are knowm as the combine.

Well, it's not really a problem, but the Episodes are definitely worth checking out. It's more of the same, but in a good way.

Actually she only said you killed it faster than any other if you actually did kill it as fast as possible, otherwise she said other things to you.

Thanks, and like i said, i kept what you said in my mind. not to be tooooooooo expectant of the game. I was expecting it to deliver loads of fun, but not that much due to length. It just didnt give loads of fun regardless

I'm with you. After one play through, I thought it was the best.

But now, playing it again, I'm wondering why it's thought to be made of pure awesome and cake.

Hey there escapees. I started a thread a while ago about Portal. Regarding wether or not I should get the game. The masses spoke and it was a unanimous "YES!". Well I got the Orange Box a few days ago for my birthday. I was excited as hell, but I kept Internet Krakens words in my head, "Don't expect it to be godly" or something to that affect. Basically don't expect the second coming of Jesus. And I didn't. So I popped it in. Played it. And about 30 minutes ago, beat it with my final time coming in, JUST a little under 2 hours(like 1hr 58min) Well I must say.......Thats what all the commotion was about?

I knew about the Cake joke, and the "Im trying science" joke, but now I understand them. I must say.......disappointment is the only word that describes how I feel. It might be because Im a veteran of Flash Puzzle games, or what, but there was only 2, maybe 3 puzzles that had me stumped for more than 25 minutes. I will admit the idea was cool, and the incorporation of the Portal gun in a game was cooler then I expected. I like the part of the game where a "difficult" puzzle is presented before you, and the satisfaction that comes with solving it. However......I was extremely upset when around level 9 when the puzzles started REALLY making me think, the game ended about 2 levels later. I was very mad that it was so short, but not because it needed to be longer, but because the last 3 puzzles were the only challenging ones.

The writing, it was comical. I wont say funny, because it didn't make me laugh. What it did was make me chuckle once, about every other level. The whole side story about other "convicts" Im guessing, was cool. About how they try to help you by leaving the writing about the cake being a lie, or the bloody signs of where to go. Also, I liked the lines given by the turrets. Those were comical, but they got repetitive quick.

The companion cube. I am confused. Most of the art I see only, or even in GAME show everyone loving the companion cube. Was the joke that I killed a friend? Cause it was just metal. Was the fact that the earlier convicts might have been insane the reason why GLaDOS was so surprised when I killed the cube so fast? I dunno, but hey, I got an achievement out of it.

I will end by saying that it was a fun game. I understand why people say the game has immense replay-ability, especially when they throw in so many challenges afterwards. However the game did not live up to expectations. It was hyped by most of you and Yahtzee himself so I had to keep a level head while playing. I will finish by saying That it was enjoyable and I will probably go re-do some levels just for the challenges but I could have gotten the same amount of enjoyment from a flash game.

Still, I got Team Fortress 2, and Half Life 2 outta it. So do you guys agree with me? Disagree?
Sure i can agree with you, to me the game was very enjoyable and I did find the dialogue funny. But most importantly for me, it was refreshing because it seemed to have been made with a certain charisma (or perhaps charm is the word I'm looking for) and to be frank, I don't react the same way as most people with puzzles to I had quite fun time approaching things more 'artistically'. (perhaps I'm a bit retarded in that sense)

In any case, I never considered it godly but I will say it was a step above most the games I see piling up today.

More of the same in what sense? Just another FPS, but with so much AWESOME CRAMMED INTO ITS VEINS that it stands out somehow?

NOW I look at it from more of an artistic pov, it seems cooler. However, the junk that clogs the arteries of gaming today seems to have gotten a rather unique bypass with this game. It seems however, that it still didnt stack up to the under-over-hype i was prepared for.

It's all explained in the first level and when you see Eli. Basically, whenever you're stuck in a room with characters talking you're listening to the plot, whenever NPCs don't explain the plot by talking to each other/you, you can look at random things to get more plot/background information.

Try Portal: Prelude. it's a mod and it's damn good, and there are some pretty challenging puzzles in that one. Plus the story is even a bit better, in my oppinion.

Hey no problem. Just as a warning, you may need to play through Half-Life 2 and its episodes before you understand most of it. Valve's story telling method is a bit different then most other games which is nice in a sense..
