I like to call this the "Halo Effect". Thank my lunch buddies in high school for the title XD
Basically, when you hear people blab on and on about a game (and yes, I will admit that I have difficulty not speaking about something I really like that other people haven't seen/heard/played yet) to the point that, when you get around to playing it, you already know most of all that's coming, and thus have the experience buttfucked, therefore making it less fun that it might have been otherwise.
Now let me just clear up some confusion before it settles in. I'm not saying you shouldn't know a damned thing about a game before you play it. That's just idiocracy. Knowing something about anything before it comes out or before you experience it isn't a problem. It's important, for example, to know somewhat about what's going to happen to you when you're giving birth.
However, having someone detail exactly every experience they've had in a certain car or with a book or whatever is unnecessary, and may ruin potential twists that you might otherwise not have seen coming, or the mood that said medium is supposed to convey. It's for that very reason that people try to avoid spoilers as much as possible while writing walkthroughs or interviews or whatnot.
Anyhow, sorry if you had your fun ruined by cake-wanting fans, but then again, you did ask
