*is half-German, speaks German, has spent a few years in Germany*

I think of Germany as the part of my hometown(I live in Houston) I don't get to visit very often. I've spent something like one month per year over there ever year of my life.
It's like "the nice part of town that's really hard to get to" in my head.

The old school WWI spiked helmets. Always felt bad because you know someone somewhere has sat on one

I like Germany as a country, and I tend to tiptoe around the whole issue of what went on in World War II. I think my love for Germany stemmed from my incredible love for the band Rammstein. In fact, I learned more German form listening to Rammstein than I ever did from 2 years of language lessons at school.

My car is German. German is the 2nd language I want to learn besides English (Latin being the first, 3rd being old Norse).
Nazis are among the first thoughts, and their awesome inventions like the V2 (guided missiles), the STG44 (and by extension assault rifles), ME-262 (jet fighters), and their awesome tanks.

The Brandenburg bridge. And their soccer team. Big apartment buildings, and fat, rich CEOs. And, of course, Commisar Rex

I know the game- and filmindustry trys very hard to keep everyone thinking that germans are still Nazis. But I´ve got fate that the escapists think different, so tell me (if you don´t mind) what is the first thing that comes to your mind exept a big empty cinema with zombies in brown uniforms and obvious poses attacking you (and maybe a friend).
Actually I think of a story I heard of a German king who during one of the Crusades, rode on a ship at the head of his army. As the German forces neared the shores of enemy territory, the German king decided to give a speech to inspire his forces then after the speech lept from the prow of the ship into the water below to swim to shore. In full plate armor. He sank like a rock and the Germans decided that perhaps God was not with them, turned around and went home.

EDIT: Whether this was true or not, I found it to be hilarious.

I think of the German language. Of course, I'm in a college German class, so I'm obviously a bit biased. But yeah, I have to think about Germany for a good piece of time before I think "Nazis".

The country next to Poland. Also the language I pretend to shout when I enter a game of Call of Duty. Then after about 7 seconds of German-like shouting, I back out to leave everyone thinking to themselves "What the hell...?"

Why, what do you think?

1) I think of the EU, since everything I've read about Germany in the news recently has been about the EU.
2) I think of this awesome German guy I know
3) I think of Nazis. Sorry, but I do.
4) I think of my uncle who was German
5) I think of Berlin. Nothing specific, just the word. Berlin.
