Probably Mortal Kombat, although Curse of the Catacombs and The 7th Guest were both around that time as well.

I think I was as shocked by anyone at Mortal Kombat, but Turok on the N64 was a whole new level; you shot people, and instead of them falling over right away, they clutch their wound and collapse after a brief struggle. It was guilt-inducing.

Lemmings. They exploded into blood when they died =(
Actually, it was apparently Wolfenstein, but I can't remember playing that.

I was in the arcade, 12 years old, just wrapping up having spent a fistfull of quarters on Street Fighter II.. my usual.. when I heard "COME HERE!" shouted out from a new machine with a gaggle of people all standing around it. I had to crane my neck around to see what this game was.. it told me to come here.. so I did. I saw 2 Ninjas, 1 in a yellow costume, 1 in a blue costume, fighting each other like in SF2.. but this was different.. they looked more natural, digitized motion captured actors rather than hand drawn animation. Blood sprayed all over the place when they were uppercut or punched in the face, and then I saw it.. the words "FINISH HIM" came up on the screen with a booming demonic voiceover, and the screen darkened, as the blue ninja reached forward towards the reeling yellow ninja.. and ripped his head off, spine dangling down below!

"SUB ZERO WINS..... FATALITY."

... I went back to the Token machine.. I had to play this game.

It took me waiting almost an hour to get a crack at it, but at its time, the original Mortal Kombat was oh so worth it.

Seven Cities of Gold (EA-C64) was super violent for its time. The gist of the game was that you were an explorer in the New World. But man, if you got off on the wrong foot with the natives (which was almost all the time) it was a hellacious bloodbath. It wasn't very graphic---the natives would "POP" when you hit them with your sword, stick or whatever that little four pixel thing was.And your"Man"represented your whole expedition.

But the numbers...damn.I'd get tired of killing them,it was that brutal. It was really sad.It was hard to be the good guy.

---Imagine this...You discover an Inca city and you come inside with gifts to make nice with the chief.Sometimes the natives cleared a path to the chief and were nice, but not often.
Mostly what would happen is some native would get too curious and run toward you.If you didn't avoid him he'd "POP" when he touched you.-At which point it was generally ON.If not the natives were certainly affected by the death of their buddyThe drums would start beating louder, more natives would crowd closer around you,and they blunder into you or vice versa..."POP"---IT"S ON.
And once on it was ON!---Human Wave after Human Wave would beat themselves against you, until the populace was thinned out enough to make the place a ghost town.Good Luck setting up a Mission anywhere around too, because now when the natives see you---ON.They'd even ambush you.
I would even leave the area and come back years later to the same place...The drums would start beating...the natives would rush us...and we'd get together and do it again.

For me it was probably Soldier of Fortune. I hold that Duke Nukem doesn't count, since it's not realistic enough... whereas the aforementioned was a milestone in depicting how gruesome and painful it really is for a human being to get shot in the arm, leg, guts etc. (unless he's you, oddly). The whole idea of killing realistically depicted humans was rather disturbing to me and I still think it was a poor design decision, as well as the birth of one of the game industry's greatest liabilities and press bullseyes: the "Murder Sim".

I think it must've been Doom. Perhaps GTA 1, or perhaps Mortal Kombat. I'm not too sure of when exactly I played those three, but they would've been some of the first violent games I played.

I reckon the first Prince of Persia. Getting cut in half by those 'chomper' things always made me a bit queezy in the stomach. That soundbyte from those things biting down still haunts me to this day.

Then came Mortal Kombat and turned it into a huge joke. Then came GTA1 and ran with the joke.

ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

GTA 3. I wanted vice city, but my older sister got the wrong copy (I was 9 at the time, she was able to pass for 18)

Really, I'm sure the first violent game I've played was either Doom or Wolfenstein 3D but the one that stands out the most, if not only for it's insane amount of gore was Splatterhouse 2. I vaguely remember being both intrigued and a bit frightened by it.

Medievil. I don't care what anyone says. You could chop off a zombie's arm, and a fountain of green blood sprayed out. (Given that it was incredibly cartoonish. >_>

Urban Champion.

Always seemed violent to me when I was young, I mean you punch people down into a manhole.
