EDIT: And could everyone please stop saying religion?
You sir, are crazy.

And religion is a perfectly valid answer; it's not exactly been trouble free (ever).
since when is ANYTHING trouble free? if it isn't religion, its idealism. if it isn't idealism its racism, etc. Humanity is just one big ball of trouble and religion or lack thereof wont change that.
Religion and superstition have been key factors in holding humanity back. Now sure, it helped in places (the example's gone out of my head), but overall the impact is not great.

I don't know, I can think of at least one religion to have never had a holy war or the like.
I'm sure there are plenty (not that I was talking about holy wars specifically) that haven't given the 100s, if not 1000s of religions there are/have been.
no what's really hold humanity back is humanity itself. if we remove religion it won't help. we still have shitty education, people are starving, wars are being waged, genocides occurring, the increasing gap between rich and poor, and the general human apathy just to name SOME of humanity's problems. we are still as savage as we were when we were still hunter gatherers. that is holding humanity back, not religion. if we can fix these issues, we can progress but sadly we just don't care as a whole.
Save me the melodrama (and write properly).

The notion that humanity has gone nowhere in 100s of 1000s of years is absurd.

Yes comrade, down with democracy! Seriously though, what do you have against democracy?
Everything - the concept, the execution, the whole damn idea.

I should probably make a list:

1) Most people aren't politically educated. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that a democracy expects the masses to make correct decisions and choose leaders wisely. That would be the same masses easily manipulated in the horrible totalitarian years, easily manipulated right now, in the very country that calls itself the home of democracy, by disingenious bastards akin to Fox News and others.

2) Populism works. There is no way everyone can know what's going on, no way they can have the full scope of information - hence, no way to make the right decision. Hence, people who pretend and switch sides - they benefit.

3) While it is entirely true than in the non-democratic countries people get little information, in the democracies they get a lot. Most of the information, however, is false. A lie. Quote-miners and liars profit. (Example: Sean Hannity, of Fox News, has recently aired a clip of Obama saying "taxes are scheduled to go up significantly, for everyone". There the clip abruptly ended, just before Obama said that this was the plan of the previous aministration.

Democracy might be the best regime that exists right now, but it is extremely, impossibly overrated and is simply a "lesser of evils".

1- Religion

2- "Reality"-TV (This is NOT reality! Stop trying to make us think it is)

3- Censorship (Shitpissfuckcuntcocksuckermotherfuckertitsfartturdandtwat - How do you like that!)

4- 3D (Not as in Duke Nukem 3D or Wolfenstein 3D!, The 3D that causes every movie to be in slow-motion and cost more to see)

5- Guns (Swordfighting was perfectly fine!)

I don't disagree. The system of democracy is far from flawless, and preferance voting means the most popular, or at least least offensive, candidate gets chosen, not necesairly the best one for the job. Political campaigns are fed on spin and plain faced lies, aswell as many an empty promise. The greater populance is easily swayed by media and the politicians are at eachothers throats with the most mind-numbingly boring arguments to gain public approval replace the current president/primeminister so the whole bloody cycle can start all over again. Democracy is far from flawless, but we're kinda stretched thin on viable alternatives, so we learn to live with it. And hey, sometimes it works out alright.

And America was founded on pilgrims, but that doesn't mean we should all wear buckle-hats.
That literally makes no sense....

4: Automatic weapons. They're not meant to used for hunting, so they're meant for us to kill each other.

Disney pop stars aren't genetically modified, but they're made by disney in a way, so that counts as my fifth.

You'd be surprised. I've had many family members wear them, and I see them all over my college campus. It's funny--they're supposed to be "hidden" accessories that people can't tell you're wearing, but anyone who wears them can be spotted a mile away.

Eh, I was just in a really petty mood, is all. Under normal circumstances, my list would consist of nuclear bombs, military dictatorships and the like. Also all of those "God Hates Fags" signs can burn in hell, along with the sick people who wield them.

The pilgrims first came to America because they were seeking to worship God (the Christian God) in the way they wanted, not the way Britain was telling them to at the time. So had it not been for religion, the pilgrims wouldn't have had a reason to come over here, and who knows when they would have.

Also, apart from many legal systems and ancient and modern cultures, religion has also brought most ancient and modern art that ever existed and ever will exist. Most artistic and architectural movements and trends can be traced to some sort of religion or religious movement at some point or another. It's amazing, really. Well, to us art students it is, anyway.

2. War on Drugs - It's created more problems than solved
...Really? It'd be better just to let crank and coke go unchecked? You really believe that?
I believe that certain drugs like Marijuana should go unchecked; it causes no permanent damage to the body and it's been clinically proven to help in the process of fighting cancer.

Now drugs like cocaine or meth, I believe those drugs should stay illegal.

So far I have seen a lot of hate on Religion and Atheism and all that, now I can only presume many use it out of legitimate displeasure on the topic or a bad personal experience, maybe simply out of spite or jumping on the bandwagon. Let me just say if I could only use one of my topics I would hope that it would count as a multiple of five;

1 - Human ignorance

I say this because as a species we can't make any real progress unless we put our petty differences and arguments aside us and learn to at the very least tolerate other peoples ideas, life style or general way of thinking. I'm not saying we all have to hug and unify but just general tolerance would be a start. We have seen what happens when people look down on and condemn others for how they think; The Crusades, Genocide in Nazi Germany and Russia, a long list to be sure. But all this happened and still happens because people belittle and eventually condemn others for how they think.

tl;dr - Don't put down other ways of thinking or the Human race will never gain any kind of progress
