This is only looking at War Games really, of course they are going to be very palette swappy. You should play something proper like Timesplitters(Hopefully Free Radical aren't over),Half Life 2 or Bioshock.

They definately feel much more "meatier" than most FPS games.

Remember. 90% of everything is crap. There are a lot of FPS games out there in circulation. Therefore, that 90% of crap represents a very large number.

Actually, that's another point. Why are there so many FPS games to begin with? Does it have some sort of inherent superiority over other genres? Well, no, and that kind of mentality is a problem. It implies that players are okay with mediocre design, gameplay, story, etc. as long as you see through the characters' eyes. Basically, it's implying that we're complacent enough to let it be. From that perspective, the reason's a bit clearer: easy money from stupid people.

This is my opinion: You can't make a sweeping generalization about any genre (like how a certain Croshaw is utterly convinced that a certain genre from the Far East is nothing but emo kids standing in a straight line stabbing monsters from 30 feet away). Half-Life, Portal and Painkiller show that not all FPS's are space marines killing space aliens. Fallout 3 shows that not all RPG's are armored knights and wizards who slay goblin and orcs. And the 2D platformer is still as fun as it's always been, despite the efforts most developers put into graphics and realism. Even if 90% of everything is crap, you can still look for that juicy 10% if you're smart about it.

Bring me back the days of Hexen, Heretic, the original DOOM, Duke Nukem, Quake, etc...WITHOUT the need for realistic physics. Give me dark fantasy with a gun once again damnit.

Napoleonic wars (a la Sharpe), with muskets and flintlocks.

WW1, up over the trench with 30 buddies, all trying to get to the machine gun nest without getting perforated by enemy bullets.

Pirates, specifically the boarding parts. Running around Friggates and stuff with those awful little pistol things, complete with explodable environments from all the cannon fire.

Being in a SWAT team, having to raid random buildings in a city to rescue hostages and stuff. Even driving your SWAT van there and ordering your squad about. (kinda like GTA but with an FPS SWAT motif).
Well, the Napoleonic Wars game, while it would be extremely enjoyable, if done right, would probably be hated by the foaming-at-the-mouth public that wants quick shoot-everything-that-moves action, therefore, there wouldn't be many who play it.

World War I everyone thinks is impossible, because they think it would be boring to not see months pass while you wait for an order for attack. Of course, if some developers would think more, they could probably see that you can SKIP TIME. And, of course, there are night raids too.

Pirates. Yarr, I have no idea why they don't make one like that. No idea at all.

Wasn't there a game about SWAT? Or Am I thinking of something else?

Or how about a Old Western FPS. Oh sure, there wouldn't be many weapons, it could be more about close combat or something, with only the odd bullet here and there.
You mean like Gun and Call of Juarez?

It's like he's never played the TimeSplitters series. Just wait for the fourth game, that will show you there is still originality in FPS's.
I have played Timesplitters, featuring a grizzled space marine as its central character. It was different in taking a tongue in cheek approach, that I grant you, but it still didn't bring anything to the party that we haven't seen before. Anyway, I thought the forth one was cancelled to the demise of Free Radical?
not according to Wikipedia they didn't [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Radical_Design] you'll notice they let people go but they didn't shut down. The genius of TimeSplitters wasn't in the story but in the mini-games or challenges you could play to unlock extra characters. Like the mission where you unlocked the gingerbread man and chef, I don't remember why you were there but you had to fight with a chef and his ingredients, or the one where you fight flaming zombies at the circus. the story didn't make any sense and the space marine was a farcical look at the character, the games excellence came in it's ridiculous characters and odd sense of humor, that was the important part.

Well Far Cry 2 was knocked up a notch with the FPS/Sandbox/RPG game.

So not all shooters have "unoriginality"

I'm currently putting together the master plan for an FPS, that will star an angry nun, whose monastery was taken over by the forces of evil and she will attempt to take it back with her massive machine gun, that will shoot puppies. 'Cause, you know, they're cute. And Evil can't stand cute. The nun will be voiced by Steven Seagal.

I want a fantasy FPS. It doesn't have to be a gun, it can be...a bow, or a really cool crossbow that shoots...gremlins!
Try Heretic and Hexen for PC. They're old (they use the modified Doom engine if I recall), but they're definitely fantasy. Hexen even incorporates some very minor RPG elements.

Or how about a Old Western FPS. Oh sure, there wouldn't be many weapons, it could be more about close combat or something, with only the odd bullet here and there.
There's Gun and Red Dead Revolver, but those are TPS, soooo.... (well, Gun is both I think...)

On a more general note, try Deus Ex if you haven't. Not a traditional FPS in any way, except maybe the cyberpunk aspect. The original Far Cry is also interesting because you're a fairly squishy and average guy fighting a well-trained and coordinated army (essentially). Plus most of the levels are mind-blowingly huge and the draw distance is stellar; I've sniped somebody from more than 800 meters before. (I was on a mountain and he was down on the beach)

The reason there are so many FPSs (and sequels of said FPSs) is because without Multiplayer (and even with it sometimes) FPSs have little replay value. Lets take Quake 2 for instance (i know it has multiplayer...) The story is great and its an amazing playthrough but thats about it for the single player. You can spend endless hours in the multiplayer but as soon as the next installment comes out, most of the community moves on to that game and you're stuck with just the SP adventure again so you are forced to move to the new game. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing but most games now are relatively clones of each other in mechanics and combat stylings. I'm frankly getting sick of the new wave of FPSs with you only being able to carry 2 guns and some grenades at one time! Bring back my seemingly physic defying backpack that can hold 9 guns and ammo for each :D

Ok, we have the grizzled space marine with a gun that looks like a piece of construction equipment or the WW2 tough guy with a chin you could crack anvils on.

Anyone else?

Why in the name of Michael Bay are there no other genres of FPS games? I am loathe to speak for anyone except myself but am I really the only one who is getting a bit fed up with this? It's not even as if it would be difficult to come up with some alternatives... here:-

If they had a go at any of these I guarantee they would generate more interest (and sales) than Medal of Honor:1032 or Call of Duty 17. Is there a valid reason game developers haven't tried something new?
The napoleonic wars one would be very very boring, Different but boring, although maybe if they turned the reloading into a mini game type thing(but that era really lends itself to more of a RTS game). WWI could work. I like the pirates idea, If you could use swords and daggers. The SWAT one kind of sounds like rainbow six though, Maybe if you ramp up the raid planning capabilities.

The new game ledgendary, is a new and different FPS, you play as a thief, with a magic hand... and you shoot lycanthropes and griffens and minotaur and shit. The controls on the demo seemed a little buggy but hey the game is different

Those weren't very good though... Gun was okay but still.
